Space Brothers 5:
That was a fun episode. We get to see some Mutta/Hibiti interactions, and there's a lot to be gleamed from the way they deal with each other. Their dialogue and actions each help to pull back certain layers of their personalities. Mutta's still struggling with a lot of things at this current stage.

The ending certainly provides an effective tease, too.

Didn't you also recommend E7 even though you didn't particularly like it as much as others too?

That's right. For some really popular shows which resonate with a large number of people I attempt to divorce my own opinion about the work when giving out specific recommendations. This is because I understand that there are some things which don't bother everyone but really bother me.

Don't be ridiculous, they're guns. How would they grow up?

Wow, the Hitokage seal of un-approval. That's difficult to earn.

This aspect of Upotte confuses me. But then again the show isn't meant to be taken in any serious manner so I just let it slide. I just assume they are the same age forever. Its the only way to keep my brain from exploding.

Eiken is the Warp 10 of the anime stupidity and pandering scale. Eiken Factor should be with Fractales in the list of anime metrics.

Speaking of Fractale, I was talking to my friend at the festival today and he not only loves Fractale, but plans to buy the discs. He's very excited about it. He said it had a good ending too. He's not even talking ironically.

The Tatami Galaxy 6

First half: ENGRISH

This explains a lot.

Second half: SEX

Certainly one of the more creative portrayals of seduction I've seen. Poor Johnny.

This show continues to be pretty incredible.

Farewell Lancer.

Kirutsugu
is a real bastard. Saber deserves better.

Wait, how did you come up with that diagnosis? You just arrived five seconds ago. He is not bleeding that much, how do you know it's serious? It looked like a concussion to me. Is it an internal hemorrhage? Did a piece of his skull get inserted into his brain? Maybe a rib pierced his lung? How can you tell without opening him up? Are you working on nanomachines? Where did you get your medical degree? Is the Alliance this desperate for personnel?

He's a future doctor with future technology. Duh.

You know what? I do think Ufotable needs to remake Fate Stay Night, but the only problem with that is that they have to include Shirou, and how would they possibly make his character bearable?

I really liked the music in this one and seeing the girls get the ship working was interesting enough.

The expression 'pug ugly' didn't come out of thin air.

Pugs are some of the ugliest creatures in existence, why anyone would think they are cute is beyond me.

You wound me, guys, you wound me. ;_;

I guess I'm alone on Toei Kanon faces being cute as well?

Doing HF route and not Fate route would already be an improvement on the general annoyance of Shirou.

Unfortunately, Shirou's base personality and beliefs is so flawed it's still pretty much impossible to make him completely bearable.

The Kanon 2002 faces are definitely cuter than the 2006 faces.
The 2006 style is just CGed to death and looks stupid.

I guess that had everything I could ever want out of an episode of MGX, and more. It starts with some kind of normal premise where characters act and have desires which seem very natural but somewhere along the way these normal teenager matters are explored through an extremely odd lens. The fact that it all manages to work without coming off as exploitive or stupid or 'weird for the sake of weird' is a testament to the quality of the direction.

I am sure the ANN guys will make a joke about it though.

Oh, next week looks like a beach episode as well. I feel that such a topic is rife with potential.

Recommendation request! (doesn't have to be from this season)

I want to try and get back into anime,

Here's info on how I want to narrow down

1. Everything I've watched by Makoto Shinkai has been pure joy.. if there is anything similar to his work it would great, I love the emotional pull, making everyday life seem almost dream-like.
3. I can't stand Japanese humor / gags / the less of this the better
4. Action is okay, but prefer it on the light to none side
2. I really enjoyed Lain, things that fool me into believing they are intellectual/ highly philosophical are great. emotional elements of Makoto Shinkaiwinds are ranked higher then lain though.

What can you guys recommend me?

There's definitely something not quite right about the 2006 art, yeah... before I've said it's because the moeified versions KyoAni made don't fit the series, and I do think that, but yeah, somehow they're just not quite right. I was thinking more "2006 is too cute looking, 2002 fits the series better", but maybe you're actually on to something for why 2002 looks better, I'm not sure...

Haibane Renmei!

(Maybe also Texhnolyze, but know what you're getting into with that one...)

Ugliness has its charms, I'm sure.

The Kanon girls do NOT look better as super-cutesey moeblobs.

School Days is pretty popular on animeGAF. There might be a bit too much "Japanese humor" for your tastes, and the art certainly isn't Shinkai-quality, but I think it's worth checking out. It does an excellent job of bringing gravitas to everyday life, and makes you contemplate your own.

Aoi Bungaku
Casshern Sins
Dennou Coil
Hotarubi no Mori e
Mononoke
Natsume's Book of Friends
Ojii-san no Lamp
Time of Eve
Trapeze
Usagi Drop
Wandering Son

Ergo Proxy is the most faux intellectual show around. No one likes it though, but you might for all I know.

It's hard to recommend something without knowing what big shows you've already watched, but some good shows from the last few years include:

Wandering Son
Bunny Drop
Mononoke and Trapeze
House of Five Leaves
Ojisan No Lamp
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Time of Eve

I'd recommend some more famous stuff, but for all I know you've already seen it.

cajun's definitely onto something. I feel the CG-ified faces make them look puffy and artificial; it's almost too moefied.

Maybe for 2): Time of Eve, Kino no Tabi and perhaps one of Satoshi Kon's movies such as Millennium Actress/Paprika,? I haven't watched Lain so I don't know what you really mean by 'fool me into believing they are intellectual/highly philosophical' but the ones I listed are pretty good in general.

Dennou Coil and Time of Eve definitely might suit your tastes.
Trapeze might be too colorful and insane. But you never know.

But there isn't really anything to be gained either. A waste of time is a waste of time.
But there's plenty to be gained from watching Mars of Destruction. Most notably a greater appreciation for good sound design and direction.

Upotte!! 2

Man, what an awesome episode. Seeing cute girls shoot cute guns makes me happy. This episode had very little fan service which was surprising. Well, girl fan service anyways, lots of gun fan wank. The next episode seems to be a return of more pervy stuff, but I'm all for that. Um, yep.

Looking through everything now and yeah you guys have restored my hope in the genre of anime.

Going to start with Haibane Renmei and Time of Eve, then continue along with the other recommendations, if anyone else still wants to chime in please do so!
