Recommend me 20-30 hr JRPGs on the PSP!

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I'll be going on a trip soon so please recommend me awesome JRPGs for the PSP. Just note that:

- it shouldn't be a strategy RPG
- can be a PSone classic

Crimson Gem Saga

Have you played Trails in the Sky yet?
I think he did, but if not: do that. Skip the sidequests though, that will drag it beyond 30 I believe, took me 50 hours with 100% (or close enough) completion. Final Fantasy IV would also work if you feel like replaying that, and Ys Seven's definitely in the 20-30 range, and Fate/Extra should be short enough even when going for a 100% playthrough too.

Yeah.

Here are the list of JRPGs that I've completed on the PSP:
  • Trails in the Sky
  • Ys I, II, III, VI, VII
  • Final Fantasy IV
  • Star Ocean 1 and 2

Is Fate/Extra any good though? How are the impressions? I do know the Fate series has some kind of huge story tied to each other.

For some reason, I've lost my copy of BbS and I'm having a hard time with Crisis Core.

I'm not sure about Lunar and P3P though, I completed their originals before (Lunar: SSSC and P3 respectively), how are they different?

Fate/Extra.

I like the fate series, but isn't this like a more complex version of rock-paper-scissors? I think he's looking for something a little more fleshed out.

Ys is a great series, but I see you already played a lot of them.
Birth by Sleep is fantastic, but not on PSN.
Persona games are good, but I was never a huge fan.
Valkyrie Profile got a PSP port(Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, IIRC) and it's pretty great.

There are many, many more.

Shame on you Ultros.

Btw I still need to pick out your losing avatar for this year ;)

Seriously, Brave Story is that one original PSP JRPG that no one ever talks about, but that's actually pretty good. I really can't think of anything better to recommend on the platform given your stated preferences.

It's solid. Too bad the game is no longer available on PSN.

If we can stretch what a JRPG is, then Birth By Sleep.

I would recommend a PS1 game but I have a feeling you've played any I would recommend. Especially Square Soft games.

Agree. Super underrated and contains some choice RPG elements that everyone wishes more RPGs did, like leveling team-up attacks between party members and rewarding item crafting. Some of the best graphics on the system, too.

I dont know what is up with this thread but play jean d'arc you will not be disappointed. If you want something longer play Disgaea 1.

He said it shouldn't be a strategy game, but Disgaea 1 DID wow me a lot more than most SRPGs had, partially due to how fast it felt. Still, at this point he may've played an entry and made up his mind, but if not it's worth trying, it's about 30-40 hours if you don't give in to wild grinding.

Presentation and music are good. Gameplay is repetitive. I didn't know anything about the Fate series and I pulled out alright. Lots of stuff is explained well. At least the universe itself is interesting. You'll get a little more out of it if you've experienced other things in the series, but you're fine if you play it as-is.

I think you've played most of the good stuff. I liked Crimson Gem Saga, a KRPG, but it seems to be a divisive game around here. Brave Story is a good one; it isn't really mindblowing or anything in terms of story, but I dug the presentation a lot at the time, and unite/combo attacks with party members are a huge plus for me. I'd love to recommend Tales: Radiant Mythology, but I have difficulty rationalizing it as something that you'd want to play. Also, RM2 is superior and I can't go back to RM1 at all. Um... I also liked God Eater Burst, but that might not qualify.

This thread was really great at the time, and had quite a bit of discussion about lots of RPGs on the system. This thread about 2010/2011 RPGs on PSP is some good reading too. Much of the RPGs on the system that I would recommend are SRPGs or something, though, and you're not looking for that.

He doesn't want SRPGs...
which is a shame for him because they're awesome on the PSP.

I saw him say he doest want SRPGs but that is crazy talk. The best turn based RPGs on the PSP are SRPGs. I put way over 100 hours into Disgaea 1 and it is such a great game. OP if you havent tried you really should.

How did you guys beat Persona 3 in 20-30 hours? It took me 70 :s

It took me 80, but I think they're just trying to get OP hooked.

OP, if you're looking for a 20-30 hour JRPG I highly recommend

-Jeanne D Arc
-Ys Seven
-Trails in the Sky
-Brave Story (as said before in the thread, a very solid title but no longer on PSN)
-BbS is also a good contender.

All great games though, so I'd head off for them all. I wouldn't try to go for Tactics Ogre though because just one path took me about 50 hours. Yeah, 50 hours.

My dibs with CGS is that running never works, the enemies will always catch up to you.

I think I'm going to check out Brave Story then (I think they're still selling it at our local store), if not then I'll check out Fate/Extra.

I want Tales of Eternia but I need to import. :/

Also is Legend of Heroes II and III recommendable? I know it has performance problems but I can withstand that.

Tales of Eternia is great, but be warned that it's possible for you to get a first print copy that will freeze on the Volt boss.

However, I'm more than willing along with other people on the internet to do that part for you on a later version and then save.

Im in the minority here, but I personally enjoyed Legend of Heroes I-III, played them all after playing TitS. Really enjoyable imo if you can get over the games shortcomings. Never really had a problem with the translation, battles are simple, and the story is slow-paced just like TitS. The enjoyment really comes when you connect all the dots after playing all three games. I can still see copies of II and III in most of our local stores, just call some Datablitz branches, Im sure there are still some there. You might have trouble finding I though.

I'm surprised everyone is recommending brave story.

I didn't like it.

Yeah I don't get it either.

Since op has already played Trails in the Sky, I don't know what else there is to recommend.

Persona 2?

Persona 3?

Ys 7? Though not really that long.

gurumin (it's like an ys-lite,also it's from falcom too so complete your collection)
phantasy star portable 2 (i never played pso or psu but i adore the psps)
valkyrie profile: lenneth (tri-ace's best game to this day imo)

as for ps1 classics, legend of dragoon was added to the us store recently, dispite having 4 discs it's only 25-30 hours long

did you play wild arms before?if not get it asap

The biggest problem with Brave Story and PSN is the fact that since it was removed, it looks like it might never be transferable to Vita. Can't get it from PSN or transfer from the PS3. Awful move by Sony if they aren't allowing backward compatibility for titles removed from PSN.

It's not completely ruled out, Guilty Gear Judgement's been delisted yet it's transferable via the PS3, but it's one of the last I anticipate seeing of those that actually hit the PSN.
