It isn't basically a new game, it is a new game. It has all new galaxys, plenty of new mechanics, tons of new powerups/Yoshi, It had 7 more galaxies than the original did(and the original reused galaxies towards the end), and double the amount of stars.
Poor choice of word from me, sorry. What i ment is that i'm sure some assets from SMG1 are re-used in SMG2, but SMG2 still have a lot of new content, so it would take some time to develope it.

that is what i thought regarding new content, thanks :)

I'm sure that's what you meant. I just get annoyed when I read people refer it to an expansion pack instead of a sequel especially when you can criticize tons of other franchises for similar things.

Yeah, i didnt mean it like that at all. I agree with what you say. For example, i see this often regarding Call of Duty games, some people calling a new CoD game for a map pack etc.. But there is a lot of new content (new single player campaign, new maps, new weapons etc. etc.) in each new game. I call each CoD game for a brand new game in the franchise even if some assets are re-used. Nothing wrong with re-using assets, it is a waste of time and money to make everything from scratch in a sequel.

About PSP attach ratio, taking the total number of PSP software on garaph.info, the PSP attach ratio is about 3.3. In comparison, the DS attach ratio is about 5.3.

Just because I was curious ...

PSP *Monster Hunter* attach ratio: 0.66
NDS *Mario* attach ratio: 0.50

From that, relatively more people bought a PSP for games with "Monster Hunter" in the title than bought a DS for games with "Mario" in the title.

and reading stuff like this, I clearly understand why Iwata was so crazy about having MH on board on 3DS.

I remember some interviews where I was thinking " Dude, calm down, you have Mario and pokemon, you don't NEED MH in your console" and still, Iwata sounded like obsessed with the MH phenomenon..

that is amazing.

MH was truly what made PSP do decently in Japan.

If losing MH for sony is worse than Nintendo losing freaking Mario....
Vita might be in more trouble than I ever imagined.

Donny, you're too good for such a silly mistake. :)

If you are going to make a statement based on absolute numbers (not percentages), such as you did, then the attach ratio is meaningless without multiplying it by the install base.

It's increadible that the 3DS has already 1/3 of the install base of what PSP has in Japan in over a year. If 3DS keeps it up it will surpass PSP in less than 4 years!

Took me a second to figure out what you meant. Added "relatively" to the original statement. There were relatively more buyers of Monster Hunter on PSP than buyers of Mario on NDS. :) (relative to the install base)

Edit:
In absolute sales, there were 12.6m "Monster Hunter" sales on the 19.1m PSP install base compared to 16.4m "Mario" sales on the 32.8m NDS install base.

The franchise has a playable character in Smash Bros. That's the only way to get a first party nintendo game to sell.

F-Zero games pre-SSB sold more than the ones that came after.

having a character in SSB doesn't guarantee sales. i'm pretty sure the ad campaign and word of mouth are the biggest reasons KIU is selling and SSB presence is a very small factor.

yeh, sadly that's a mistranslation, "There's No Way 'My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute Portable' Could Continue" is closer

Yeah. The "ble" (ブル) was probably translated as "bull", but I don't know where the "porta" (ポータ) went. haha

But I think it should be "can't continue" or, literally, "there's no reason for it to continue".

Slow crawl to a million?
Slow crawl to three million actually:

[WII] Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo) {2009.06.25} - 359,690 / 1,996,832
[WII] Wii Sports Resort with Remote Plus (Nintendo) {2010.11.11} - 14,438 / 935,555

Total: 2,932,387

Nintendo probably is too. I don't think anyone here thought that Fire Emblem was going to be a 400k+ and possible 500k+ seller when it was first announced

Right? It was one of the least exciting parts of the pre-TGS conference last year.

And all of a sudden it's out done recent sales of the series and taken 1st place for most played game on my 3DS. Insane.

Does anyone know if Bravely Default/King of Pirates are expected for 2012?

Bravely Default is definitely a 2012 title, King of Pirates has been kinda mia recently so who knows.

I could see Bravely Default being marketed a the big holiday RPG to get for the 3DS this year.

Bravely Default is probably this year, but I don't think we've seen anything of King of Pirates beyond that movie.

Yeah, Andriasang says last news on KoP was late last year, but the official site still claims 2012. Bravely interests me - will be interesting to see the timing for release.

Still hoping Heroes of Ruin and Rayman Origins make it to 3DS here. Dying for more news/release date info on Fantasy Life. Will also be interesting to see how Project X Zone and Layton X Ace are timed as well.

Ditto on Bravely. I downloaded both demos (such as they are) on my 3DS and was very impressed with the art and production values. If the gameplay and/or story don't kill it then it could be a very strong title.

Nintendo Week indeed... they should rename the holiday!!

I don't think I want to talk about Vita anymore until/if it gets back on its feet (which should happen someday, who knows).

FE and KI:U are a great success, i hope this makes nintendo put this much effort on other releases (imagine a Famicom Wars with the production values of FE).

I think their way of handling things in japan has been top notch ever since the price drop, and good things certainly await for 3DS :D

Wasn't here for most of the GameCube era, but what I was here for, that's pretty much the same thing as for that system. With its place accepted, it was pretty much only discussed for big games that would come out on it. It's part of the five stages of loss. Acceptance is the end.

Edit:
Vita seems to be in the Bargaining phase currently. "If only this would happen..." "If only this had been done sooner..." It could still turn around, but that seems to be where it's at now.

As Zeer0id said,

The apps Nintendo is releasing for the timing of BW2 release are definitely to tempt people to purchase a 3DS if/when they purchase BW2. That is if they do not have a 3DS.

It's a pretty smart move on Nintendo's part.

Smart, but also essential from a business perspective. Without the apps the run the risk of people not upgrading or buying a DSi to play. The app goes some way to removing that effect, depending (of course) on how deep the app is. The games probably 'had' to be on DS to maintain online compatibility with BW (in Game Freak's minds), so this is just a 'band-aid' to move any sales bump to 3DS.

Not actually that important

At least if it had some big names announced we could play with the "just wait for x" chalkboard :(

They've never had a problem revising down their forecasts (or even changing what they shipped last year to make this year look better) before. May give a proxy idea of if a price drop is coming, though.

Obviously forecasts aren't set in stone(3DS cough, cough) but it should be what they expect at this moment in time which is what I'm interested to see.

About 20 minutes till the earnings release comes out, the conference call is 2 and half hours after that.

Sony's earnings are out, I'm sure you know who will make the thread but spoiler:
No Vita shipment numbers and they combined Vita and PSP in the forecast. 16 million total.

Also, PS3 slightly missed target at 1.9 million for the quarter

Yeah, noticed how they'd combined Vita/PSP shipments. Meaning we end up getting a better picture from Nintendo and their slides as to how Vita is doing globally, than from Sony.

Also even combined that 16 million forecast is ridiculous.

Amazing. They refuse to admit there's a problem!
