WP-GAF: What do you want from Windows Phone 8?

What features are you expecting/want from WP8?

I've not spent much time with the platform admittedly, but here's what I'd like to see:

  • Windows 8 Contracts - Contracts is a great, well thought out implementation that fosters inter-connectivity between apps. I don't think anyone will mind if MS borrows it from WP's big brother.

  • System-wide screenshotting - Come on MS.

  • Centralized notification area - Not having one of these in a modern smartphone OS is a no-no, it's paramount. I'm pulling for something similar to this concept; although the problem with that is that it wouldn't be accessible anywhere in the OS --- I'm sure the smart guys at MS can figure something out.

  • Support for 1280x720 and above resolution - High PPI screens are amazing. A mobile device without a high PPI screen is useless to me.

  • App side loading - Impose whatever limitations on the WP Marketplace you want (although I do wish they'd tone those down at least to Windows 8 Marketplace levels, but please let users side-load any app they want. Pretty please with a cherry on top.

  • Windows 8 style Charms bar - Get rid of the capacitive buttons and instead swipe up to reveal a Charm Bar.

Sounds about right. I love the contracts system as a concept.

Would only want to see deeper Xbox Live integration, though can't really define in which shape.

wi-fi when phone is locked,

ability to take screenshots,

more customization of the tiles in general,

available to the lumia 800 :P

I want the one thing ms will probably never give us.... put out the full windows 8 on phone hardware and let it truly unify things.

A nokia produced galaxy note like device would be my ultimate device.

  • UI/UX consistency across Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8: right now, they're in the same "family", but really don't share much at all in terms of usability.
  • Tighter Skydrive integration: Skydrive is a great storage platform that is still underutilized, and many users are still ignorant of. Offer options to store backups, stream audio and video directly, etc.
  • Skype integration: Just do it already!
  • Separate volume for audio: C'mon, son.
  • More live tile usage: allow option of wide tiles for apps that can use them, display more information on live tiles, more consistent updates

All I can think of, in addition to what you already listed.

Contracts are pretty much a given.

Notification probably isn't happening. They will probably open up the notifications area of the "Me" hub to third parties to get somewhat of a notifications center.

Resolution increase is a definite.

As for what I would like to see:

Backups.

Better management of the device from the computer.

Opening of low level APIs\more background tasks to developers(pretty much going to happen).

Keep that blazing fast responsiveness that WP is know for on all hardware.

Oh and let me upgrade my damn Titan to W8.

On the hardware front:

PureView, PureView, PureView, k thx.

Open the messaging api so skype/google chat/whatsapp can integrate in the messaging hub
Better html email rendering
No need to ever connect to a pc, like updates or downloading podcasts.

Folder preview that actual show the folder.jpg

Edit oh I thought you meant w8.

Ok how about marketshare that's bigger than 5%.

I think they need to make the home screen nicer somehow. Compare a Windows Phone homescreen to iOS. iOS is so much more colorful and lively. I think not having every tile being the same color would help, but even then - the home screen is missing something. Its the least attractive part of the, overall, very attractive OS.

notifications would be great, yeah.
hmmm.

otherwise im pretty content with windows phone as it is now. Sure there's a few minor annoyances, but those could be fixed with a minor update outside of apollo.

deeper skydrive and skype integration would be cool. some windows 8 features i guess.

MS please do not listen to this person :)

In no particular order...

Custom & unlimited contact fields: Currently Mango only allows one mobile number and custom fields such as "school email" or "google voice" don't show up on the phone.

Option to disable Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn contact info from appearing on each individual contact: Information such as work address, email, phone number, etc. can show up more than once if they have that info posted on their social networking accounts and you have it already listed in your contacts... making individual contact profile a mess quite often.

Ability to add (a lot) more than 20 people to contact groups

System wide backup and ability to backup all settings, files, texts, apps, app settings and save states, and startscreen layout and the ability to transfer all said things to a new device ala iPhone.

Both cloud and desktop/laptop based backup.

Ability to share apps in a fashion kin to iOS: i.e. not having to use the same Windows Live account as primary on two separate devices to share an app.

A central notification area... swipe to the right on the start screen.

A screenshot function

Uncompressed skydrive photo-uploads natively

Tighter integration of apps into native phone hubs such as Skype in the messaging hub

Customizable notification sounds

Option to chose artist or album artwork on Music + Video tile and lockscreen

I'll post more if I think of anything else.

  • Full gamut of bluetooth profiles. It's quite limited now, and doesn't really support any of the ones useful for higher level usage beyond audio streaming. For example, the lack of SPP is why the Pebble smart watch can't work with it.
  • Search within IE
  • Global orientation lock
  • Volume memory for different output types. At a minimum it should be for the different categories (built-in speaker, headphones, or bluetooth) ... though with bluetooth, remembering each synced device would be quite welcome.
  • App data backup - preferably cloud-based
  • A/V streaming from SkyDrive integrated directly into the main Zune interface.

To have come out around the same time iOS and Android started kicking off. So it could have crushed this fragmented app orientated operating system.

As a big WP7 fan, I agree 100%

As much as I love icons, I wish I could customize some of the colors - does everything on my home screen HAVE to be one color.

I put all of the most-used tiles I want to see at the top: Phone, Messages, Email (work & hotmail), Calendar, IE, etc.

This ends up causing everything to have the exact same color: usually blue or green - the only two tolerable colors.

I sometimes want to move other tiles (office, accuweather, etc.) to break up the monotony at the top but I don't b/c I want the most used ones up there for quick access.

* Why can't I have more options in terms of color choices for the theme?

* Why can't I pick a different color for hotmail vs. my work email?

* Why can't there be some variety equivalent to what Windows 8 CP shows?
