Nintendo Downloads - May 2012

I'm in the mood for a platformer after the Rayman demo. I don't have any of the DSiWare or 3DS platformers. I'm eyeing a WayForward game, or the DSiWare Rayman port. What's the favorite platformer 'round these parts?
I liked Mighty Switch Force for 3DS, not a bad little game and some of the levels will keep you thinking. It is alittle on the short side but from what I am aware the game is getting a free patch soon that is going to add extra levels which should be good.

I downloaded Rayman on DSiWare when it came out but didn't play much of it, NintendoLife didn't seem soo keen on it, but it seems to be a pretty faithful port of the original all for 800 points. Graphicaly it looks great but other then that I don't remember much of it.

That said I dunno may be worth buying just after the Rayman Origins Demo came out, maybe they'll see a rise in sales of that on the eShop now the demo is out and might be good for future downloadable Rayman games coming to the eShop.

DSiWare has a couple good platformers.

Dark Void Zero- Awesome game styled after 8-Bit NES games. Has that tough-as-nails precise platforming that you used to see a lot in the 90's.

Shantae: Risky's Revenge- Super expensive, but worth it. This is the sequel to the rare GBC game. Styled like a Metroidvania. Fairly easy though.

Chronos Twins- Really unique platformer that has you controlling your character in the past and the present at the same time. One of the harder DSiWare games i've come across.

Rayman- Decent port. Hard to see anthing though since this game was not made for such a small screen.

Earthworm Jim- Haven't played this much. I believe it's a port of the SNES game. Pretty wacky & zany platformer

Cave Story- Haven't played this but everybody seems to love it so check it out I guess.

Disappointed in the Rayman demo.Blurry, low rez and 30fps :(
3D doesn't make up for these.

3DS only has 400x240 to begin with, there's no getting around that. What did you expect?

And besides all that, the sound quality in the demo is atrocious. I really hope it isn't indicative of the final product.

Other demos have had terrible tinny sound that wasn't indicative of the final product... Revelations' demo springs to mind.

Rayman DSiWare looks/plays just fine, but the cropped resolution makes it a lot harder than the original.

Having played 5 minutes of the Rayman Origins demo I have to say that the blurriness and specially the tininess of it all make it a deal-breaker for me. I mean, I don't even notice where enemies are placed! This game has obviously been designed with a big-screen in mind.

FYI I haven't played any other version of the game.

It's not that it's a bad port... the 3DS screen resolution isn't built for a game where everything is that zoomed out. It's a blurry mess. That and the game just lacks the polish of other versions of the game.

The resolution is lower than the actual screen resolution in the Demo. It looks horrible and the image clarity is completely fucked up. I hope this is not indicative of the final game.

Huh no it's not. In fact the blurriness is caused by the exact opposite problem. The original artwork was too high resolution and it became blurry when downscaled.

You really should. Every other version, Wii included (which is the other version I have), is quite good.

It's a bad port, and I'm not referring to the graphics. It doesn't play well.

I was waiting for the 3DS version to decide which version to buy. So I went with the XBox 360 version. I bought the collector's edition brand new (discounted) at Fnac to support Ubisoft Montpellier.

There's also the Prehistorik port (early '90s platformer originally by Titus) and that about covers it.

Of all listed, DVZ and CS are absolute joy. The rest are also enjoyable, though.

ps: there's also this exquisite delight which, while deriving much of its mechanics from a platformer, is not exactly one, but is a blast nevertheless and one of my all-time favorites: GG series Ninja Karakuri Den.

Has Fire Emblem just had a constant stream of DLC every week?!

I'm not sure if I like this coming from Nintendo - it could go either way.

Yes, every week there's a new paid DLC chapter featuring crossovers with previous FEss and one DLC character - based on an old character but with new artwork done by guest artists. They've also released two DLC stages meant for farming money and exp, and next week there'll be a third one to farm items.

In addition to the paid DLC though, they're also releasing free stages (twice per month, I think?), free legendary weapons from past games (also seems to be twice a month) and free characters/battle encounters with old artwork daily. Even DLC characters, like Marth and Roy, also have free versions with old artwork from their own games.

While it's good to see Nintendo putting so much effort into supporting a title post-release I think that has to be balanced out with the potential for them to follow the route of on-disc DLC, endings you have to pay extra for and incomplete retail experiences. I have faith that these things are against the ethos of the company, but if it becomes a profitable venture for them...

Is the DLC already on the card like with the Layton games?

Well, at least as far as Fire Emblem goes, they're using the paid DLC and free downloads to provide extras that the other games never saw - it's all focused on crossovers with previous Fire Emblems that have nothing to do with the new game's actual campaign. And the series never had this kind of crossover before.

Also, this doesn't seem to be on the cart, due to some compatibility issues that happen if you check another player's team through Streetpass and he uses characters that you haven't downloaded (The DLC character's portrait and any unique skills/weapons/classes are replaced by generic "other world x" counterparts, with the default "My Unit"(Custom character) used for the 3d model if necessary).

Here are some screens:
http://serenesforest.net/fe13/post/other_class2.jpg
http://serenesforest.net/fe13/post/other_character.jpg

The first one is a shot of an unsupported character with an unsupported class. The second one is DLC Marth, class changed into a Magic Warrior (a DLC class) seen by a player who doesn't have either Marth or that class. His name is there and the map sprite kept the "blue hair" information, but it's a generic one rather than the one of his actual class, he doesn't have his portrait, his class is replaced by a generic "other world class" and one of his items, which comes from a DLC, has been replaced by a "otherworld item", alongside ones of his skills becoming "Otherworld Skill", while the other equipment, which can be found in the main game itself, kept their name and function. So, basically, the core game stats and simple information like names are there, but all the actual DLC content is replaced by placeholders.

They seem to be using all that to keep people following the game, and it seems to be a fairly efficient strategy, without hurting the game itself, just adding onto it. On the other hand, they are also selling some chapters that the player can use to get easy gold/weapons/experience - basically selling cheats. I guess that's the most suspicious part of their DLC experiment here.

-

Personally, I don't think this format of DLC is bad as long as it's clearly extra content. Rather than doing something stupid like turning Luigi into DLC, what if the next Mario introduces DLC characters and stages based on related characters? Like Wario and Donkey Kong (alongside new staged themed on their games) as DLC?

I actually liked the first level of Rayman, but damn that chase level is one tough cookie. X(

BTW, are you able to re-download demos after you play though all of the trials? I hope they don't block you from downloading them again. :(

VVVVVV is great. The main game is a bit short (~3 hours) and it's pricey compared to the PC version (I blame the unhealthy pricing model of the PC indie market), but being on a handheld makes it a lot more convenient and it comes with about 20 extra user-made worlds.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
You know the eShop is in a bad place when I turned my system on last night to download the system update + Mario Kart 7 update + Rayman demo and I realize it's the 1st time I've been to the eShop since the big April update. I hadn't linked my Club Nintendo Account or seen the new snappier interface.

Meanwhile you know I've been all over my phone marketplace as well as Steam's marketplace during that same time frame.

Nintendo needs to give me reasons to get actually go there.

That's not really a platformer... I mean, yes, you jump, but it's got more in common with Pac-Man than Super Mario Bros.

Of course it's a platformer, you have to navigate levels by timing your movement and your jumps in order to avoid obstacles. It doesn't really have much in common with Pac Man other than the maze-like structure of the levels.

Just played the Rayman 3DS and pretty disappointed at how blurry it is. This is definitely a programming problem and not a hardware issue.

quick one, is the dsi xl store the same as 3ds minus the 3d stuff?
Yes, except it has a worst interface, but much better music and download animation. It doesn't have VC or anything since those are 3Ds games. Just DSiWare

I hate Nintendo for getting rid of awesome Wii/DSi Shop music and animations.

Your primary mission is to attract the attention of enemies and lead them to a place where they will be eaten.

And you jump over a few things on the way.

Yeah, so I pretty much have no motivation to ever play it again.

It's like high score games never existed before online leaderboards...

On the other hand, I visit the eShop every week to see what's new, watch new streaming game videos and Nintendo Show 3D, etc. Yet I only visit the Steam Marketplace when I hear about a good sale or want to check a specific game.

eShop isn't perfect, but if you're simply not visiting it at all, how would you know there's nothing new to see there?

Games aren't defined by their end goal. Super Mario Bros isn't considered a flagpole touching game or a princess-saving simulator. Jumping over obstacles is the primary means to the end goal in Kokopolo, hence it's a platformer.

Curious: Would you regard Metro Cross as a platformer?

Edit: OR, indeed, Pacmania?

The discussion would be moot if:

1) I had initially asked for a 2D Platformer, not a top down

2) If there's an actual definition of a platformer

I would categorize Kokopolo as an action puzzle game at the very most, but I have not played it so I do not know. It appears to be a mix between Pacman and a top-down isometric platformer (sans isometric perspective, for extra specialness). It looks neat but hard.

I decided to wait on the platformer and buy X-scape instead, which is cool but controls very oddly. Not sure it was a good choice.

Are there any upcoming games on the 3DS or Wii like VVVVVV or Cave Story? I love these gameplay-over-graphics indie platformers and want more! I'm in Europe, so I'm still hoping for Cave Story on the DSi shop... and Mutant Mudds, of course.

Too bad that La Mulana won't show up, but there's probably a good chance it will end up on the WiiU.

I like it, but it's really odd. It looks amazing and has some nice music though. The controls are getting easier. I'll probably bore of it quickly and buy one of the recommended platformers above.

I wish Nintendo would put the original X on the VC just so I could compare the two.

There's not a whole lot of stuff on the way, aside from a ton of VC games that Nintendo seems to not want to release. I hope we hear about Jett Rocket 3DS soon.

Having never played either of those games and just going by youtube footage, I would say yes to Metro Cross and no to Pacmania. Pacmania isn't a platformer because it doesn't have pre-defined obstacles that you have to negotiate, it just looks like Pac-man with the ability to jump over the ghosts.

;_;

Nigoro's looking for a new western publisher, but I've pretty much given up hope at this point. Even NOA/NOE gave up publishing WiiWare games over a year back (Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Line Attack Heroes still being MIA).

I'm surprised there hasn't been some already. In my 100+ hours playing the game I saw spots where Nintendo could easily slip some more levels into. Oh well, they might just announce it and release it days later. That wouldn't be unlike them. Wait till Spacewr0ld E3!

After this long it's more likely that they'd just do a 3D Land 2. *swoon*

I belive you can change the controls in the game so its all done my the face buttons, if I recall it was much easier to play that way.

Which reminds me I really hope X-Scape gets added to the Club Nintendo program one of these days, would really like to replay it again. Or better yet would love to see a new one made for the 3ds.
