She got off with $1.5 million while ruining a man's life.

Or what, do you think her "guilty conscious" was enough punishment?

I'm not even sure she was feeling guilty based on her comments from the story. She waited until he was out to contact him, he had to secretly tape her confession, and she wouldn't speak to to the prosecutors. I think she was more worried about him causing trouble for her once he was out. That whole "let bygones be bygones" line kinda seals the deal on that for me.

I would argue you would likely be a bigger threat to society than she is.

Why? Not talking about small lies here. It's such a lie, that it's easy to make an argument for why everyone should be extremely cautious of her.

No different than a sex offender, in the sense that he/she should be considered a threat in some capacity.

Doing nothing to said woman for stealing 1.5 million dollars and sentencing a man to 6 years in prison is not justice. Therefore nobody should be holding a position of her facing no penalties.

In cases like these, she is no longer the victim and in fact the perpetrator and her name should be made public as the victim and then supposed perpetrator was.

Furthermore, cases like these show that more weight should be placed on empirical evidence for rape cases over verbal testimonies in certain jurisdictions. A convincing liar should never be sufficient on its own to put someone in jail.

are you a virgin?
Yeah. I'm a (personally socially conservative) Christian and unmarried, so it's the way for me to be consistent. I added the personally socially conservative because I think and vote like a liberal Democrat. Not ever touching people was an exaggeration but correct for this topic.

I doubt I have anything to worry about with this kind of thing because I mostly stay away from crazy people, and my parent was just trying to scare me (probably because the girl was underage).

To semi stay on topic, I wish that false accusal could be dealt with without lessening the likelihood of real rape reports, though I don't know the best way for that, even if I hopefully don't have to deal with it.

P.S. I don't feel great saying much personal information outside of PM's, though I made an exception here, so I hope you appreciate it, haha.

Edit: I need to stop visiting these threads. They worsen my view of people.

She'd get more time in prison for doing a white-collar crime like embezzling $1.5mil from a corporation than for falsely accusing a man of rape and resulting in him going to prison.

Yikes. Ridiculous that people want to lock her up for 6 years. What exactly does that do?

In addition to locking her up for 6 years, I also want them to give the man some kind of monetary compensation, immediately remove him from their sex offender registry (none of that waiting bullshit), and make the liar pay back all the money she was paid.

You're right that only locking her up would accomplish nothing.

The capacity of threat posed by someone willing to "smash in someones head with a pipe" is greater than that of liars.

What's hard about it now? If a woman's eyes are big and sad enough she can destroy any life she wants to. Seems really easy.

Holy hell yes, lets paint all women as people who can get whatever they want cause that's not bitter as fuck at all.

As said in previous discussions, prosecutors will not go after these women and treat it as the heinous crime it is for the simple question of: how do you prove a woman was lying about the claim? A failed prosecution attempt on a man alleged to have raped a woman doesn't necessarily mean the woman was trying to deceive the authorities. A lack of evidence in her claim cannot and should not equate to her guilt, but it seems like an inevitable path if we introduce severe sentences for women who do lie and thus women who cannot prove they were raped (true or not) would be penalised.

You don't go to jail because of the crimes you might commit but because of the crimes you commited.

But I don't even understand where you're coming from, who's willing to smash in someones head with a pipe? Most I ever did was to kill a rat with a baseball bat. He was in my house, my sister and mother were screaming, and I just thought I had to make it quick to cause less pain. Didn't help when the first bat broke only his spine. My mother cried...I felt pretty horrible afterward honestly.

He raped me.

Kids are gone.
Job is gone.
Reputation is gone.

Doesn't matter if it's true or not. Really doesn't matter if there's proof or not. So I struggle to see the difficulty.

Well, at least she came forward. Now give him money.

If by come forward, you mean voluntarily confessed, then no, she did not.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, I'm happy she contacted him, but I think it was more of a self-preservation thing for her than a caring for his well-being type of thing.

That's it women, don't come forward with a rape accusation cause if you can't prove it you might ruin the rapists life.

It's... not automatic. Yes, there will certainly be some short term damage to one's reputation via the people who immediately believe the claim, but someone accused of something like this can state that they are not guilty and seek to have their name cleared.

Obviously, it shouldn't need to come to that (when the charge is based solely on a lie), but it's not like you're just automatically declared guilty and sent to prison.

The only rapist in this story is the one who didn't do time. Don't falsely accuse people of rape. Is that asking a lot? Am I a being a rape culture warrior here?

I didn't think you could be removed from the list he was put on.

How anyone could disagree with the bolded is just beyond me. That is a very simple concept, and its fair.
Actually, you cannot just say "we're going to start throwing people in jail for false accusations". What kind of false accusation? Mistaken identity? Overreaction? Prosecution can't make the case?

You have to be really careful here, because if you start punishing people who report crimes who turn out to be wrong, unless they're deliberately committing fraud like this lady, you're going to undo a century of progress and sweep crimes against the powerless under the rug for fear of retribution. This kind of issue is why whistleblower statutes exist. There's going to have to be a really high bar for this one (self-admission of perjury and fraud is a good one).

How many white girls do you know with a name like "Wanetta Gibson"?
Actually, a lot of those "black names" that people think they can use to identify ethnicities were originally "white names", or so my uncles Tyrone and Carlos (both of whom who are white of German and Dutch ancestry) have led me to believe. Names come in and out of favor among various groups and in various times. I'm likely to name my first child after my grandparents (Jefferson or Anita).

Guy accused of rape applies for a job.
They Google his name.

RAPE HEADLINE.

That's probably not going to go well. More people read accusations than they do retractions. And that's if the media outlets even bother with the retraction or any kind of follow up.

Dude should get his chance to play football in college. He's only 23 now right? Get him a shot, get him his life back.

He is 26, he could possible play for a college team (maybe the nfl if they make a special case for him) but since he still a sex offender he can't leave the city on his free will. So he would be useless for a a big time college team if they have to go on the road out of the city.

Yes you are. This case is terrible and the woman who accused this man is bottom of the barrel kind of bad, but that doesn't mean we should make sweeping legislation changes that would make raping women even easier, thanks but no thanks.

What is easy about raping women in the US? It's a serious crime that's dealt with serious punishments, even in he said/she said cases.

It's made easy by attitudes like yours which encourage women who've been victimized to stay silent about the crimes done to them.

Yet it's still grossly under-reported. Add stiff penalties for anything resembling a false accusation - Do you think it'll get better or worse?

I understand that it's not a great situation to be in. However, that's not what you're initial post stated. For instance, I don't know why my son would be taken away from me if I'm found innocent of a crime. I don't know if I can be fired from my current job based solely on an accusation.

Mind you, going forward, I understand that even the accusation can be pretty damaging.

Seriously the only way to ensure cases like this don't happen is to not ever prosecute cases when all it is is he said/she said, sure many more rapists will go free but there'll be no more innocent men languishing in jail

Yep, lets continue to make sure rapists walk free.

Is this seriously not illegal in the US?

I mean even in radical feminist Sweden she'd be charged and convicted. Not to six years of hard time mind you, but it's quite possible that she'd get jailtime.

This is just silly. It's already illegal to file a false police report, and to purger yourself on the stand.

You keep talking about hypothetic women, when we have a clear case of a liar here that ruined someones life.

She should be punished under the current laws, that is what (most?) of the people are asking for.

Is it really your contention that this woman being charged with a crime (which she clearly committed) would discourage others who have actually been raped from reporting it?

Seriously, what? My attitude is that people shouldn't make up fake rape because they don't want to deal with the fallout from parents, their church, the alleged rapist being the wrong color or not leaving his girlfriend/wife for her, etc. They absolutely should report real rape. So that's my attitude. Don't really see anything too controversial about "don't make up fake crimes."

I'd say it's made easy by people like this woman who lied about being raped. It'd be a moot point if not for people like her, right? But, not only does she profit here, but she slightly lowers the collective belief in the claims of alleged rape victims without much evidence.

She's profiting at absolutely everyone's expense. Let's direct our blame at her instead of each other.

Do you want a specific law targeting people who falsely accuse rape?

Also you said this shitty thing:
