The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

unless you have a 360 or a great pc, the ps3 is pretty great.

even if you have those, i think it's worth getting for a few handful of exclusive games. valkyria chronicles is an amazing take on the strategy rpg genre. 3d dot game heroes is pretty much top-down zelda in everything but name only. uncharted 2 is a fun little romp. ratchet & clank future: a crack in time is fucking amazing and extremely overlooked by many people. ymmv with littlebigplanet, but i found it pretty fun for just the single player stuff (can't say the same about the sequel).

The main problem is that I don't have time much to play games, I barely get to finish games I 'really' want.

It's mostly a [personal] mental barrier. I still haven't put my SMG2 disk in the Wii [literally]. Because I made a deal that I won't touch the game until I get all the stars in SMG, and I haven't done so yet :(

ah positive speculation?

I can see people being underwhelmed even if Wii U is 3x-4x more powerful than PS3/360 and tell us "your expectations were too low to begin with, it's the absolute minimum Wii U needed to be" and then start bashing how Wii U is under-powered a new

Wii U Aliens: Colonial Marines is best-looking version because of console's "more modern tech"

Hot on the heels of Vigil revealing that the Wii U version of Darksiders 2 will look "at least as good as" the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions,
Gearbox Software has gone one step further, and insisted the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines will be the best-looking version.

Echoing Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford's comments made earlier this month, senior producer Brian Burleson described the Wii U is a "powerful, powerful machine".

Publishers and developers working with Wii U are under orders from Nintendo not to divulge information on the console, with technical specifications a closely guarded secret.
Previous reports have suggested Nintendo's first HD console is "not as capable" as the PS3 and Xbox 360. And Nintendo has issued a statement admitting its focus is on gameplay, not graphics. Eurogamer has been told by developers who wish to remain anonymous that Wii U ports of multiplatform games will look as good as PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, but games built from the ground up for the console will show its true potential.
While Burleson is under the same orders not to discuss the Wii U in detail, he insisted Gearbox has managed to get Aliens: Colonial Marines singing on the machine.

"[Creating the Wii U version] has been pretty easy," he told Eurogamer. "The Wii U is a powerful, powerful machine and it can do a lot of cool new things. And so the game itself, moving it over to work on the Wii U was not much of a chore.
"Now the interesting thing is finding out all the cool ways you can use the controller to do new stuff with it. You can imagine all the cool things we can do, with this franchise and having a thing with you, right?"

Gearbox plans to have Aliens' famous motion tracker displayed on the Wii U controller's touch screen controller, alerting players to the presence of those nasty aliens. There are other applications, too, although publisher Sega intervened in our discussion of them to prevent details from being divulged.
"You can imagine some cool features, for sure," Burleson said. "It's not hard to imagine some cool features."
The Wii U's power, though, is "one thing I can't talk about", he said. "Actually nailing the specs, they haven't come out with them yet."

But, the Wii U version of Aliens will "be better" than the PS3 and Xbox 360 version in terms of visuals, he confirmed. Why? Because of "more modern tech".
What Burleson is alluding to here is the suggestion that because the Wii U contains modern components, it will by default be more powerful than the ageing PS3 and Xbox 360.

How, exactly, will it be better? "You'll have to wait and see," Burleson teased. "Just trust me on that one."
Now, all eyes are on the E3 trade show next month, where Nintendo will unveil the final Wii U design, and third-parties will announce their Wii U games and plans.

Someone actually being straight forward about the strength of the wii u and not talking in circles? what is this madness?

This praise about Wii U power has my cynical bastard metre thinking "they've got some special exclusive". I don't see the Wii U being a powerful, powerful machine so hyping it must be because of something else.

I hope I'm wrong.

From Dust, Red Steel 2 and Rabbids Go Home use LyN for example. I believe the engine was actually developed for Beyond Good & Evil 2 (it's the direct successor of the Jade Engine used in the first Beyond Good & Evil), but it scales very well, so Ubisoft ended up using it for quite a few Wii projects.

Ok. So other than From Dust, we don't know what this engine is really capable of on PS3, Xbox360 or WiiU. The fact that they're using this engine on WiiU is maybe a good sign for BG&E2.

one thing I did notice in that IGN video review of Darksiders 2 was when it was said that the Engine running the game was aging and could not push better visual... I'm wondering if that was bull on IGN's part or could the Engine be the limiting factor for the Port to WiiU thus Vigil's excuses

It's a producer talking PR. There's nothing 'straight forward' about what he's saying.

I hate being a Debbie Downer, but if people are going to be sceptical of hand-me-down information implying the Wii U isn't powerful, you should be equally sceptical of the gibberish spewed from publishers, producers and marketers. These people aren't the most informed on the technological side of things. Their job is to sell you the game, and I assure you, if Colonial Marines is timed exclusive, they will bullshit until their teeth fall out. It's their job.

Cool to see someone actually taking advantage of the new tech.

Not too bummed about Darksiders II though as it looks good visually and will probably be the better game of the two but Gearbox so far seems the best at giving us some hype about the hardware.

I know but if only for a moment, let me dream.

this is an excellent point but why do we always lean towards the lower value when it comes to Nintendo... its easier to accept WiiU is less powerful than 360 for most out here

any graphic-whore in me always dies after I see what Nintendo is offering for software... I just move forward and give them my money :sigh

such is the life of a sheep Baah

*shrug* People still getting over the DS, Wii and (to an extent) 3DS hump I guess. I just think people should keep expectations in check. The best people to teach you what the hardware can do, if you're into the nitty gritty side of things, are the people actually making the game. Producers and marketers weasel word as much as it takes to sell the game. Unfortunately we're going to see a lot of it from publishers backing the Wii with exclusives, timed or otherwise. They want to sell those games and even if there's truth to their words, they'll bury it under mounds of hyperbole and nonsense.

Proof is in the pudding. Rather than hear what people say, I just wanna see how they look.

Only around 10 days for your dream team Retro fantasy to be realized.

Just to be safe and know before it happens, EC, are you gonna go on a banning rampage if Metroid x Star Fox turns out to be real?

Just want to know so I can hit the deck before it happens.

I don't think it's gonna happen.

Paul isn't as reliable as he makes himself out to be. And the whole idea just sounds utterly ludicrous.

At least TMNT: Manhattan Crisis sounded believable.

Did you hear about the Kojima "taboo" project???

Talk about bullshit, Paul Gale should quit while he's not ahead.

some rumors are like dog shit on a nice green lawn... you never know when they are going to stick on a shoe and walk into your house and stink up the place

I'm locking the doors to my house just in case, shit happens

But what's "keeping expectations in check" anyway? Does that mean it's OK for people to prance around thinking the thing is weaker than the HD twins or what?

My only expectations are that the Wii U can pull off games that look better than the HD tech-demos from last E3 seeing as Nintendo normally makes tech demos that are conservative. :/

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Never mind every system having its own thread, every system should have its own sub-forum imo.

Maybe, but then certain groups would never check in on the other sub-forms and become oblivious to what's up with the competition. I'd rather just have the ability "ignore" threads you know don't interest you. Plus, a toggle for showing your filtered thread list and all threads.

Expecting a visible, gigantic leap from third parties, and to a lesser extent, Nintendo themselves. I predict Gearbox is blowing a lot of hot air. I'm sure Colonial Marines does look better than the 360/PS3 version, but enough for people to instantly notice when the two are side by side? Average Joe has enough trouble doing that with 360/PS3 games when one gets a shitty port. Hell, they have trouble with PC games too. I know people who just can't see the difference between pre-DX11 patch maxed out Crysis 2 and console Crysis 2. They don't have an eye for it, and probably don't want to believe it looks better either. It just doesn't look like a big leap to them. Whereas for me, I look at it and go "yep, this looks tons better".

I think you're going to see a lot of the above happen with the Wii U even if games are technically pushing more. I think you're going to see a lot of games that look, side by side, to the average gamer, exactly as they do on other consoles.

Hence why I say 'keep expectations in check'. If this were Nintendo promoting their own system with big talk, then maybe believe it. When you see gorgeous games from Nintendo, then believe it. But you should take all the bullshit spewed from third party marketers and producers with a gigantic truck load of salt. Rather than keep your expectations 'in check', perhaps I should have said 'shape your expectations'. Shape them to sources that are reliable and accurate. Not people who want you to buy their game at any cost.

All this is true but you likely won't see too many "clown Wii U screenshot" threads anymore.

That's a plus :p.

Oh, and for Colonial Marines, you also have to think about where they're sourcing their trailer footage from. Sometimes it's the console versions, other times PC for the superior image quality. If it's the latter, the Wii U version isn't going to look better, and you'll have more people saying "what's the difference?".

So, I just finished Skyward Sword the day before yesterday... I have to say, after the initial slump (i lost interest entering the Eldin temple months ago), ever since i made it to Lanayru, the game's pacing was excellent. I despice the new "pre-temple" overworld, but after visiting the worlds for the first time, that becomes more irrelevant. I'm pleasantly surprised with the diversity in later quests. It's kind of the opposite of the WindWaker, where i absolutely loved the first 75% of the game, but it started to drag itself towards the end. Skyward Sword was the exact opposite. Needed to drag myself over the first 20 hours of the game, and near the end i couldn't stop playing.

Now it's time to give Okami a second chance, order Last Story, play some Epic Yarn, and i've started to ponder getting Pandora's tower as well, after seeing a videoreview... but i'm still on the fence. I also need to get into Little King's Story again... But i doubt i'll be able to do all that before WiiU arrives, and if the lineup is as great as hinted by some, i'll be in trouble.

Xenoblade still remains my favorite Wii game, but SS sure did make a nice comeback.

Got my PS3 at the end of last year, and it's filled the game games I couldn't fill on PC and Wii.

- Vanquish
- Bayonetta
- Nier
- Shadows of the Damned
- Uncharteds
- Killzone 2 (guh)
- God of War 3 (double guh)
- Metal Gear Solid 4 (hilarious guh)
- Rayman Origins
- Demon's/Dark Souls
- de Blob 2
- WipeOut Fusion
- Flower
- Dead Nation
I'm pretty sure you could get de Blob 2 on Wii.

Rayman Origins, too, but that game pretty much requires 1080p for maximum value.

Can't say for sure. But Sony should have kept the announcements it made in the last 2-3 months for E3.
