[N-Conf] Pikmin 3

Ah, Pikmin 3.

A shining beacon in the shit typhoon raining down upon the Nintendo seas at E3.

Thank goodness for this game. I almost wish it was for Wii just so that I didn't have to reward Nintendo by purchasing the hardware day 1 for this game.

GameXplain has 8 minutes or so of gameplay footage from the show floor.

From that, looks like the rock pikmin don't have arms! Which I mean yes we can see that already, but I hadn't really thought about it. Would mean they can't latch onto an enemy, just bounce off when you throw them, and presumably also couldn't carry anything. HM!

[Edit] Oh wait one just carried something. HOW

This was Kameo and it was a 2005 game for God's sake.

I think things now are put in perspective.

And this is binding of isaac a 2011 PC game:

Maybe we should try to put things in a better perspective.

anyone have links to higher-res assets than are on Nintendo's own site? I want this as a wallpaper specifically:

It could be the angle of the camera. Some angles give reflections, and some not.....just like real lfe....
Either way, good catch!

All the footage is like this without reflections. The strange thing is that the screenshot I posted above with the reflections is actually in the demo. It functions as the title screen. But the actual gameplay segments don't feature that effect.

YES! YES! YES! Fuck yeah! Pikmin is one of Nintendo's best franchises and I'm so exited! It's a little bit of a bummer that it's an upscaled Wii game, but what can you do? Pikminnn

I actually really like the graphics, but I'm still a little disappointed that they didn't try to go after the clay look of the old Pikmin artworks. That would have been truly amazing.

Apart of that I have mixed feelings. On one hand I'm glad that we'll finally get another Pikmin game, but on the other hand I'm a little disappointed that it seemingly doesn't bring much new to the table in terms of gameplay. That's especially sad because they had the game in pre-development for quite a while. Sometimes it feels like Nintendo lost quite a bit of creativity over the years.

Seems so incredibly weird that Pikmin 3 lacks multiplayer, with the gameplay element of adding additional 'controllers/Olimars'. Even co-op could be viable. Quite a shame really, but at least the system has plenty of other options.
When was this confirmed? Even Pikmin 2 had a small form of multiplayer/co-op.

Part of me agrees that it looks a little same-y, but we haven't seen Pikmin in 8 years. Maybe they wanted to start on a familiar territory.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt (although after this show, I shouldn't) that the game has a lot of meat to it. So far we know about flying pink-min, rock-min, and team-throwing to reach new locations. New enemies, assuredly different maps.

It'd be cool if they landed on Mars or explored a snow planet or something, but given that this was the one amazing thing shown, I'm not going to let a little familiarity breed contempt. I have enough of that for Nintendo at the moment.

TBH I expected better graphically. Hopefully it's just because it's an "upgraded" Wii game. NSMBU looks great but again, it's not like the graphic power is being pushed. I'm really interested to see what this console is capable of and so far I feel we haven't seen it yet.

And also a choice and not a limitation- does it look sort of dark to anybody else? When I think Pikmin I think really saturated bright greens.

That's exactly why I didn't get my hopes up for it to be a showcase for the Wii U.

I'm gonna just give up on Nintendo delivering a quality graphical experience. I now expect all their games to be Wii titles running at 720 p no AA. Great job Nintendo.

that's not going to happen. well... at least not for the big 3D Mario and Zelda.

Thanks EvilMario!!

Here are some of the 1080p crops I made if anyone wants them.

definetly also not for Retro's and Monolith's WiiU projects. The games showed today were definetly not about the graphics and also are still in the last polish, so AA could be added until release. And this are still launch games, but hold up with no problems with the regular PS360 game.

I think I made a post before about wanting a sense of quiet life and animals doing their things and not all automatically fighting you at sight.
And the water lily ride, the flying insect going by elegantly, the pikmins sliding plants, all this make a more grounded and credible world and that's awesome.

Jesus, it wasn't built up from the ground for Wii U, how many times does this need to be said?

I know that and I don't care. At least Xenoblade had grass blades...and that's an open-world (so I hear? haven't played), 3rd party game that doesn't even focus on being close to the ground/small objects.

Whatever Nintendo's doing here looks bad. The textures are flat and noticeably bad.

So, while this looks awesome, I have to say I'm a bit pissed.

Those last 3(?) years when we were expecting Pikmin for Wii, but apparently Miyamoto was looking for the right idea...what exactly was he looking for? Just the screen to use as a map?

Don't get me wrong, it looks like a great (ideal, even) way to play the game...but fuck, I think this could have been done for the Wii, and we could probably have Pikmin 4 by now. God knows the Wii could have used the game.

When it's your showcase launch title, and one of the few meant to graphically impress at launch, it could be asked why there are so many unpolished aspects to it whether it was originally in development for the Wii for years, or not. I'm sure Pikmin 3 will mostly look decent, but don't be an apologist for sloppy shit.

Does it matter? It's a WiiU game because it's only being released on WiiU. Shouting that it was developed for the Wii first is just a weak justification for mediocre graphics, IMO. You might've had a point if it was a dual launch like with Twilight Princess.

Beyond this, if it was built from the ground up for the Wii, it should have been released for the damn thing. You mean to tell me they held out to use the pad as a map? Sure, it's a great idea, but the Wii could have used a game or two (especially one that had been basically promised like 4 years ago).

I'm just not picky I guess. I think its beautiful.

I must say, I was really hoping, after all this time, that Pikmin would look like little physical beings in a very realistic universe. Not 'impressive' graphics, but subtly amazing, textures just looking like they may actually live in your garden. I'm amazed Nintendo don't see the power in that, seeing as they're obsessed with the idea of you thinking they're real.

Like this

that should be a screenshot.

Yes, for a game that's been hinted/wanted/... for so long, the end result is underwhelming, both graphically and gameplay wise. It's a pretty small and logical evolution from an 8 year old game. And this seems like the game to make a graphical showcase for the WiiU, what with the detailed zooming in on small nature elements.

But aside from these remarks, I'm still keeping an eye on this and hope the game(play) is very polished and fun.

Pretty sure that blades of grass would not be helpful in a game like this when you're scrambling to retrieve individual Pikmin.

I would have liked a different art style that exploited the hardware, but I concede that the graphical simplicity is also a functional choice.

But on the other hand, how big are the Pikmin? Would blades of grass clutter up the screen too much, considering that one blade of grass is about the size of one Pikmin?

I still think the game looks unimpressive, but I wonder if that particular issue was more of a design choice? Or laziness. I don't know.

This is NUMBLAST, a puzzle game from 2009. That's like 8 years ago.

If Nintendo can't make the little numbers above its moveable objects look this good, I'm gonna draw this game in Scribblenauts, and kick it through my TV.

i have a feeling retro and monolith will blow it out of the park

Impressions from NWR.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/30530

I have a bit of a reputation on this site (along with Andy Goergen) for being a massive fan of Nintendo’s 2004 classic, Pikmin 2. Knowing this, it should come as no surprise that one of the first things I did when I got on the show floor was try out the long-awaited third installment in the series.

The demo level I played was one of the new modes mentioned in today’s Nintendo press event, a timed challenge where I had seven minutes to rack up the most money I could by collecting fruit, with more valuable pieces, like the golden strawberries worth 500 coins, hidden in places that are easy to miss if you’re not thorough. Along the way, you find more Pikmin, including some of the rock Pikmin introduced today.

The gameplay is very reminiscent of the previous games in the series, which is in no way a bad thing. You lead Pikmin into battle, and get them to tear down walls, construct bridges, and carry items back to base to be processed into money. The level I played had a good variety of challenges, including instances in which certain types of Pikmin were required. The rock Pikmin fit in very nicely with the Pikmin universe, and the demo showed off several instances where they came in very handy.

The game is playable with either the Wii remote and Nunchuk or the Wii U GamePad; for my playtime, I chose the GamePad. Interestingly, in either control scheme the on-screen cursor used for selecting and throwing Pikmin is controlled with the IR pointer. Trying to point with a two-handed controller was cumbersome at first, but over the course of the demo it became a lot more manageable. Assuming the Wii Remote and Nunchuk scheme is the same as it was in the New Play Control Pikmin games, I think that will probably be the better way to play, with the GamePad close by for use as a map.

Pikmin 3 is very much a Pikmin game. It captures the feel of the series perfectly, and while this demo doesn’t show off much in the way of new content beyond the rock Pikmin, I’m confident this game will be the sequel we’ve been waiting eight long years for.

But on the other hand, how big are the Pikmin? Would blades of grass clutter up the screen too much, considering that one blade of grass is about the size of one Pikmin?

They clearly wanted the playing surface to be barren. The perimeter meanwhile has plants and such.

That said, the textures could be better. The water reflections could be better. And the Pikmin could rotate when the lilypad does.

Finally got to check this out, been at work all day. Screenshots look good but the video is oh-so-much better.

I can understand the dislike over some of the texture work, but the IQ looks clean, performance seems great, and the foliage and animation look fantastic. I think it hits the most important points visually. Oh! and the color!

I can't wait to play this. Can't believe this thread is only a few pages long. Easily tops my most-wanted list. I think the WiiU pad works well with this too.

I'm quite satisfied.

EDIT: Reflections would be nice I'll agree, but I'd prefer that the lilypad didn't spin at all vs everyone spinning.

That's what I'm thinking. The textures still are too ugly, along with the other issues you mentioned, but I don't think a lack of grass on the play surface is a bad thing.

I didn't love the pointer use in the NPC games, but I think it will be much better here with the whole game designed with it in mind. It certainly seems to be an ideal control method for a game like this, just needs some tweaking.

Also liking different attack points, which the pointer control will really help expand on.
