Wii U "touched by genius", "gameplay tour de force". Other impressions?

Well the author is right; people will have to play and judge for themselves.

But before anyone gets carried away, realise that The Guardian consistently posts hyperbole for Nintendo. Isn't the author a (hardcore ninty fan) gaffer? Or that might be another UK site I'm thinking of.
Edit: I mean look at the incredible hyperbole in their 3DS hands-on: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2011/jan/20/nintendo-3ds-hands-on-preview

"3DS is such an astonishingly seductive box of tricks that it may well be Nintendo's best piece of hardware ever."
"has an unbelievable technological depth to it which throws up an almost bewildering welter of possibilities. "
This all seems very similar to what happened with the Wii.

The Wii was the internets darling after its E3 2006 conference. Not at all similar to the Wii.

Wow...that is a stunningly positive set of impressions.

Certainly thought it looked promising from the conference, but, as I said in another thread, it's apparent that I'm not on the same wavelength as 99% of GAF. :lol Very nice to read some hands-on impressions that seemed as positive as how I imagined playing the games would be from the videos. :)

Well, I guess an E3 conference isn't really all that important right now, but I still can't help but feel let down by what was shown. I don't like that they decided to only show launch window games, I really feel like that's what gave people a bad taste.

After watching the trailer showcase I'm beginning to change my mind a bit with regards to the launch lineup.

Lego City Stories
Pikmin 3
Zombie U
Scribblenauts
NSMB U, and
Rayman Legends all look great. And most of them are exclusive.

Maybe you don't remember the Wii launch, but the response at that time was not always enthusiastic.

Before E3 2006 maybe, but the Wii was hyped to heaven and back after E3 2006. The press excitement died down afterwards (a lot of them down to totally ignoring the system completely), however.

Holy shit lol.

I originally didn't note the author, but Steven Boxer is a shill for Nintendo. His objective commentary and claims of "genius" is journalism at it's finest.

What a fucking clown.

Yet Stephen "MTV sensationalist" Totilo is hating on almost everything about WiiU over on Kotaku. Seems his staff are on the same path.

http://kotaku.com/5915817/hands+on-with-the-wii-u-nintendos-risky-new-revolution

"this game is no Super Mario 64"

I would hardly call that hate. Maybe he just didn't like it, most of his criticisms were fair and he did like quite a few things too.

You had some complain about the kiddie nature and graphics but overall the wii was adored from top to bottom.

wat

Half the people loved it, half the people hated it. It was most certainly not universally adored.

I have no problems with the Wii U hardware. We've been getting (second-hand) information for what to expect in terms of performance for a while now. And we know that there's interesting and new and unique ways to play games.

But where's the compelling software? Pikmin and perhaps ZombiU...nothing else in sight as far as I can see.

I really, really, really want to like this system...but as of today I just can't get myself to do it.

take a look at Project P-100 gamespot video

anyhow nice hearing about some first impression.

I played all the demos on the floor. One trend I've found people doing is that players look at the screen almost exclusively. People playing Trine2 would play the demo without looking up at all. And if you do, your special abilities are tied to the ouch screen, forcing you to lookdown - problematic in combat and timing based platforming. Same trend in Scribblenauts. If users behave this way, what's the point? I wait to play through again tomorrow, but WiiU isn't doing anything for me.

i think its also a matter of people getting used to it

In the multiplayer demo for ZombiU did you use the Wii U Pro Controller? Does it have rumble?

Not sure if search is working, but you can do some digging through NeoGAF to find threads from the time of the Wii's launch. It's no mystery. And many of us were here to witness it.

I must have been browsing different parts of the internet then, because the Wii was still being shat on by 'hardcore gamers' in the months after E3.

Even if that is so that is about 40% more peope initially excited about wii then people are currently excited about wiiU.

The other issue is there was no Mario 64, twilight princess, metroid 3, F zero, wii sports or any groundbreaking blockbuster or killer app that grabs the hardcore Nintendo faithful or paralyzes the casual consumer with desire the way past launches for Nintendo went.

I think it's too early to make any predictions but with a more expensive launch price, two other options with half the same lineup games wiiU will have and at lower prices they have a bit of an uphill battle this time.

Not going to buy into media hype. They gave me zero incentive to buy this on the stage where they had the chance to do it. More Mario, Wii-Fit, singing games and social crap? No thanks. Third party titles that I have already played or can play on my PS3/360 in the waning days of this gen? No thanks.

The only thing that looked even remotely good to me was Pikmin. But that does not make me want to run out and by one. Perhaps over time it will look more attractive to me. But as of now? No way, not after that showing. I am going to ride my PS3/360 right on into next gen and do so with plenty to play.

Pikmin for the hardcore, Mario for the casuals? Seems like a good combo. I'm not willing to call it or anything because I feel completely out of touch with both core gamers and the expanded audience. I don't give a crap about social media stuff in my games but apparently people eat that shit up so maybe all those social features in Mario is going to be a goldmine.

fortunately the average casual hardcore gamer doens't read newsapers.

I care only on Charlie Brooker's opinion.

That article was ugly

Is that Mario game enough to get casuals to upgrade their wii and spend 299-399+ on a new system? Not to mention given the alternative options of two cheaper consoles with boatloads of established franchises and similar performance?

For me I'm just not sure.

Me personally, as a gamer who likes pretty much any system that comes but and also like's Nintendo and bought a wii near launch for wii sports, and Nintendo games, I personally have no desire for this console so far. In fact I came into E3 alreadyanticating I'd buy one but now have no real reason to do so. Third party games don't look like they are going to be noticeably upgraded graphics wise and the first party games/exclusives aren't helping me justify a 399 purchase plus the price of the games.

Well uhhh it's Mario so maybe? Like I said, who knows, I'm not going to predict what the mass market is going to do, but looking back at the last few New Super Mario Bros, it seems to be a big hit with them.

I guess my question is is NSMB the sort of game that sells well to established owners of a system or can it actually be a system selling focal point of a new system?

I personally don't know. Nor am I familiar of when the NSMB games released if they were launch titles or not.

if you guys didn't like what you saw then who cares what some game sites has to say. is your opinion suddenly wrong because somebody else has a different one? i think you guys are giving way too much credibility to game sites.

Hands-on impressions tend to be slightly more important than non-interactive, canned conferences.

This is Bizarro World. I have no idea what to think.

Nintendo needs to have these things traveling to every city in America so people actually get their hands on it, then, because they won't get this by simply looking at footage.

I don't think any of us here did.

It's important to remember that Charlie Brooker has recently become a father. I think there's a genuine risk he may be enthusing over wonderbook, for Pete's sake...

...nah.

Yeah don't they know that
Wii would like to play!

But Gaffers told me that the system is doomed, terrible, underpowered, lacking in support, and pointless. How you guys attained all of this knowledge without actually knowing any details about the present or future state of the system or anything of substance in general is beyond me, but I'm inclined to believe you all.

Just like how I believed everyone in last year's E3 threads who said that Super Mario 3D Land would be a bad game. You guys were clearly blessed with some kind of omniscient power last year, so why would I doubt you this time either?

This guy who actually played the system obviously has no idea what he's talking about.

Bolded. Never, ever going to forget this one. It should be all people need to realize that GAF's magic 8 ball is broken when it comes to fun games sometimes. Mario 3D Land was supposed to be a turd according to GAF.

None of the NSMB games were launch titles. The DS launched with Mario 64 DS and New Super Mario Bros Wii was released in 2009.
