These impressions are making me feel fuzzy inside. Hopefully they're not influenced too much by the honeymoon period.

Nice writeup Biggy, it has allayed a few of my reservations. And Domino. Man I just want to fire that BR now.

Can anyone remember if the DMR had a 2 or 3x scope?

Edit: watching Walshy/Bman/Bravo vid now, Bestman said the DMR was a 3x scope.

Thanks for the feedback, Domino and Biggy.
At that point the pistol screen opens up and if you press the trigger again you can denote the projectile. I did notice that the projectile seemed to have a audio cue as well as visual cues telling players it was armed. Talking with one of the multiplayer designers he mentioned situations where you would call in ordinance drops, tag them with the grenade pistol, and the wait for an enemy to run into a death trap and blow him up. It seemed that the sandbox allowed for a lot of creativity.
So you can't detonate it in mid-air?

It is lethal and it is harder to use than it is in Reach, but I felt more comfortable with using it then I did in Halo 3. The sniper has kickback too, so you better be confident about that headshot, you might not get another chance! One thing I noticed was that the scope (when unscoped) covered up a pretty significant portion of the screen. It was somewhat weird.

We at 343 found too many people were either getting double no-scope body shots during games, or splitting wigs at a high rate and getting exterminations.

Therefore we nerfed the snipe.

Be still my fleeting heart.

I hate this notion that the snipe having a massive kickback and an interminable wait between shots somehow makes it 'more skilful'.

No.

Being able to peel four faces in the time it takes to pull the trigger four times is skilful. In a game with one shot kill scatter shot, shotgun, no bloom DMR and no bloom BR there is no reason to encumber the snipe. Why does each subsequent Halo game feel the need to slow the sniper down?

This all based on Walshy and Co's analysis and could be wrong btw.

Great write up Domino and Biggy! The game sounds good, but I'm still not 100% sold on everything. Hopefully, Gamescom will have some playable Halo 4 so I can try it out myself.

So are the "Specializations" that you get for pre-ordering with certain vendors referring to the tac-packs/armor upgrades or something else?

Biggy, I love you. Handy owed.

Hard to say. It's a completely different sandbox now. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Mastrbiggy's write up was very interesting.
That the vehicles are more like Halo 2/3 is very important, and good to know.
Still wondering about the BR though, is it 4 or 5 shot? Or like Halo 3 where 4 shot is possible but more difficult to pull off?

My only worry at the moment is that if Infinity Slayer and normal Slayer are mixed in a playlist... and there's voting too. That won't end well.

EDIT Actually, i do have another worry. The melee. Even if Halo 4 is a gun game, what prevents people from just charging in with Sprint and starting to beat you? If Melee is still two-hit-kill, it will be popular (even if it is inefficient, people are stupid), unless Sprinting can be slowed/prevented.

I think that's a pretty safe guess, going by what we've heard.

Does anybody know if the Thruster AA can be used mid air? Like could you sprint-jump and thrust for longer jump?

Hey HaloGAF, Haven't been able to post much, been super busy, but happliy blew 80% of my mobile data allowance for the month keeping up with things. :)

Halo 4 looks phenomenal. I may be an utter fanboy when it comes to the franchise, but holy shit. It looks fantastic. I would literally kill for a chance to play that internal beta - /frankie, David, if you have any enemies, they can be 'taken care of' for a modest fee.

For those that knew/were concerend, my lady is okay, just in a bit of pain until she's healed up. Sucked to miss E3 live and all that, but glad she's okay and on the mend.

The next 5 months are going to drag. :(

But good god, is it going to be good to play it! :)

Thoughts from m0dus, over in the gaming side thread. Hope he doesn't mind that I posted it here. :p

Got to play this yesterday with some of the halogaf folks.

It looks flipping incredible, first of all. Easily a major step above reach. The fidelity of the characters, the weapons, the backdrops had me almost standing still for a moment just to take it in. At least, that'll be my excuse for losing the match. I love their new approach to the art style. Evolutionary beyond reach, and the lighting and shadow is spectacular.

But I have to say one thing that probably stood out even more was the fidelity of the sound--the gunshots, the explostions, the slugs hitting you when someone is laying into you with the BR, down to the sound of your armor flexing when you break into a run--was incredible! The foley is easily the best of the series.

So what's the consensus on the new enemy types shown in the gameplay demonstration? That they are part of the Forerunner force, but just a small part of it? They obviously aren't Forerunners themselves.

Yeah I really don't understand it. Nerfing the snipe wouldn't be as ridiculous if the AR didn't get buffed with every game.

Replicate the snipe from Halo 3. Same design, same magnetism, same firing rate. Done.

I saw some weird space combat gameplay in that gametrialer clip  Don't know if that was a cutscene or not...

Also, one guy mad a pretty big jump in a spartan ops match and there was no fall damage at all.

From the sound of the Kiki video.

Spartan Ops season 1 on disc weekly unlocks. i cant imagine we get many episodes in season one 5-6 perhaps. Not a issue and hopefully it gets renewed for more seasons id have no issue paying for more content.

Still would love to see spartan ops evolve allowing for mini series or one shots playing as different characters from the universe and resolving some unfinished stories and such.

Little bit of info about Frankies job. MASTER OF CANON. i love it. what a job position im so jelly

Someone should somehow infuse the UNSC logo into my avatar.

Been trying to add some Halo to it, but have no idea how to do o. :p
What's going on with the yellow portion of your avatar? I'm completely ignorant when it comes to college sports/mascots, so forgive me. To me it looks like a star that has been knocked backwards by a rather muscular cardinal.

As to the gameplay stuff/impressions: I'm really liking what I'm hearing/seeing so far for the most part. It's really nice to hear that the audio is so good, because I watched the trailers in my gameroom with my insanely awesome 5.1 wireless headphones and I wasn't a fan of the weapon sounds at all (vehicles sound really awesome, though). Not sure what to make of some of the enhancements that allow for faster ammo reloads or having the radar on screen even when scoped in. I can just picture a guy with the sniper and the scattershot (like the Flak Cannon? Fuck YES) along with one or both of those enhancements (if that's possible), hanging out in one spot and just taking everyone else to school with his lessons in dominance. Small gripe as of now, but everything else is sounding and looking like a dream come true.
