He seems absolutely fired up about this which is fantastic. Its gonna take someone as focused as him to push this technology forward. I'm happy he's on it.

Does he talk about the HMZ-T1 at all? Are there technical reasons to go with this thing that looks like something from Max Cohen's apartment in Pi?

Now get him involved with the Wii-U controller or SmartGlass and he might actually make some awesome stuff with it. Once he has disassembled it of course. :D

He touches on it and commends Sony for pushing the tech forward but he brings up the fact that latency is still an issue compared to where it he wants it to be. Also I didn't hear numbers but he makes it sound like the Field of View of his unit is better than the competition (which I would think includes the HMZ-T1).

Man, Carmack should just start a solo podcast about everything that interests him. I could listen to him talking for hours.

We need a thread dedicated to Oculus Rift, so that all of us who dive in and start modding will have a place to congregate.

This is incredible. He breaks it down at a technological stance and backs it all up with the visual proof.

I want Gabe Newell to eat John Carmack and merge into one UberNerd who can revolutionize PC gaming and take us to the moon.

Such a great interview, I love listening to Carmack. And this VR mount looks and sounds kind of amazing. He's doing some very smart stuff to make VR way better.

Haha shit. Talking about differing laser points to fool the brain to make 3D far more receptive to the mind. The man is a god.

Hmm, makes sense. I bet John-Fucking-Carmack could get a custom one, though.

He mentioned 90 degree horizontal, and 110 degree vertical FOV, which massacres even the professional units.

You can read more of Carmack's impressions on the hardware here:

Carmack....

That was interesting, I cant believe they actually allowed him to set that up at E3, he really isnt promoting anything.

Or maybe he sold it as helping promote the new Doom 3.

Carmack's a genius, but his contributions to the industry have been lackluster over the past few years. Maybe it just seems that way in comparison to id's dominance in the 90s.

Whoa really, could you link me to any of those please. I remember hearing on the bombcast that brad wanted to interview him when they were discussing rage and megatextures, etc. but he let patrick do it anyway.
EDIT: Referring to this patrick interview btw http://www.giantbomb.com/e3-2011-a-word-with-john-carmack/17-4383/

ha, I remembered that interview as being Brad's.

Even then, im sure ive seen another interview by him before, and he also recently said on the podcast something along the lines of "every time I get to interview him I go crazy thinking about what to ask..."

He can do whatever the fuck he wants!

he'll shoot fucking lasers out of his eyes to those who stand in his way or something

Amazing thread, thanks Salsa.

"So this had been my little hobby project, but then the BFG edition for Doom 3D, it legitimized my work and I'm like okay this is something that I can integrate in to 3D TV support but the headmount display stuff is.. it makes even this 8 year old game a fundamentally different experience, it really is like nothing you've ever played like that. Ten times more graphics power doesn't give you that level of intensity."

To be fair are you gonna deny Carmack a space on the floor though?

Though as you said with Doom 3 BFG there he might have placed them together.

Every time I hear Carmack speak I am reminded of how much of a massive geek he is and also why I got into engineering in the first place the pure joy of just following my passion in building something new.

Well done John.
