Media Create Sales: Week 23, 2012 (Jun 04 - Jun 10)

For those who thinks DQX will sell about 500k... DQ Collection last year was able to reach about 400k units.

Yes, cause it was a collection of old DQ with traditional RPG gameplay, DQX is different and japanese are a traditional people

look at comgnet (just 100 points) and amazon (around #28), very low for a 2 months release (on a dead platform)

So Terry's Wonderland 3D had the best debut on 3DS according to Famitsu?
Yep. Though given an equal number of days with MH3G it might not have been.
MK7

i can't see the future yet :p

maybe in the next weeks people will get hyped about this game, but considering the actual premises it will sell much less than the previous entries...

And we all agreed on this.
But people said it might have a similar drop as FFXI with respect to FFX, which means DQX will sell 315k units... That's too low imo. A million units should be doable.

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
So, guys, Japanese market is much better than US one right now. How do you fell about it? XD

P.S. Comgnet hasn't updated since monday. Do someone know what's up with it? Ninjas, marines, something else?

Well, it's strange that until few years ago people were saying Japan would be doomed in a short period of time, with UK overcoming it, etc. and now we're seeing this market breathing a bit and US / Europe struggling.

Do you know previous Comgnet data for previous DQ main entries?
I know that preorder of that site are not 100% correct to foresee the future, but I think that the 100pt is really indicative of the flop ahead.
P4 was at 192 before release...and it will probably debut with 100k, right?

Dragon Quest X will be out in two months, not tomorrow.
And it doesn't make sense to compare X with the other entries (in terms of preorders) when we all agreed that it won't sell so much. Also, it's a MMORPG and Square Enix will find the project profitable in the long term, with people paying subscriptions, so even with 800-1milion the game will hardly be a flop.

I've never talked about profitability. I just talked about sales.
You asked us how much could it sell, we gave you preorders (from Comgnet, not real preorder SE received), and I asked you if you have previous data for the series.
So, if you want to have hints and clues about how could DQX perform, please try to find out previous data for the previous episode, two months before their release.
This could help in understanding DQX actual "tone", in my opinion.

You talked about flop and a game is a flop when it's not profitable, regardless of sales (since in the case of MMORPG there are other factors to consider).

Since we all stated that previous entries numbers cannot be reached by any means, I don't think it makes sense to make such comparions (btw, I don't have preorders numbers). DQX will obviously lag behind DQIX and all previous episodes.

Do you know how many copies will DQX have to sell to be profitable and not flop?
Me, I don't know. I usually read and post in the MC sales thread looking at numbers of sales.
I've never thought that due to the higher retail price of PS2 titles DQ8 was more successful than DQ9, for example.
So, what I'm interested in is to foresee its possible MC or Famitsu numbers, honestly.
Obviously, if it will sell 3.8 millions, that are less than the, how much...4.3 millions of DQ9?, I will judge it as a very positive result.
If, as it could be, this title will sell 500K, inmy opinion it will be a flop.
Unfortunately, without the comgnet data for comparison (MPL90 where are you?) is hard to understand if, two months before release, 100 pt are very low, low, similar, higher and so on...

In a place where Comgnet is still updating :(
You know what, Nuas ( let's call each other with the "real nicknames" - such an oxymoron XD )? DQIX was already at something like 2000pt at this point, but it's also due to the fact it had preorders started since 2007, it's a different case here. I could do a comparison with other "minor" titles, but without new updates...

No, I don't know since Square Enix did not share any sales projection.
But we do know that MMORPGs have another source of profits: subscriptions. This helped FFXI to be kind of successful without selling as much as previous mainline entries.
Therefore, I'm fairly sure that DQX won't need to sell as DQIX to be succeed.

As for DQIX on DS, its price was lower than DQVIII, but we can think it also costed less, being on a less powerful hardware, and that there also existed an agreement with Nintendo, which helped in promoting and shipping the game in the West.

We only know about sales, but we can build a context where to reason about them.

They are very extremes result. DQX will sell more close to 500k than 3.8 million, but what about 1 million? And what about the fact that it's a MMORPG and Square Enix knowing it wouldn't have the same impact as a tradition jRPG? I don't think the company is expecting numbers on par with other mainline entries, and not even close to be honest.

Well, if SE dont' give expectations numbers, we'll judge on our own and in relation to the ST.
Me, I think that this will be a very risky move for SE, that could seriously derail its major brand and its most important profits title of this fiscal year.
If after DQX they will announce another DQ main title as a MMORPG again on a Nintendo home console, we'll have a concrete signal of their happiness about the sales result of this game.

I feel that I don't give a shit because Western games are getting more awful by the day and all I'm interested in nowadays is Japanese stuff. The better they do, the happier I am.

My main concern: localization (I know that Vita is region free, but 3DS is not and even a region free system is not interesting if they don't translate at least in english). because I don't understand Japanese...

Now that SE has announced that kid's time for DQ10 is actually 2 hours every day, I'm thinking that it could sell better than I thought. For those that don't know, kid's time is time where people who aren't paying for a subscription can play for free. The hours (4-6PM on weekdays and 1-3PM on weekends) are such that working adults and older students won't really be able to take advantage of it, but I still think it's a pretty big deal.

On which note: I wonder if you just get unceremoniously dumped out of the game when the deadline is hit? I could see that getting negative responses, particularly if you're in the middle of something co-operative with a subscriber friend who's then suddenly left on his own with a drakee about to eat his face.

Do we have May monthly figures for the Japanes market? With the total software and hardware numbers, and maybe with the revenues too?
I would like to do a comparison with the US one, due to the latest NPD data released.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I doubt there is much ground to complain, since you already get to play for free - this will probably a reason to get addictive people to pay for it.

I imagine there'd be some sort of countdown timer. If people want to push it to the limit, that's their problem.

No one have pre-ordered a game since monday, so there isnt anything to update. The market isnt that good afterall :/ Just kidding hehe.

I don't think the announcement of another MMORPG from the brand on Nintendo hardware will be a sign of anything. I mean, DQX must also be release for Wii U and usually MMORPGs have a pretty long life cycle. Actually, the more DQX will be successful, the less soon we'll see another MMORPG in the series.

I'm more worried about the subscriber friend whose ally has suddenly vanished, quite possibly without him being aware that it was due.

That said, it's rather dependent on how the game's structured.

If comgnet's preorders updates really belong to history it's the best next thing that could happen in these threads.

True, but i doubt SE will have the game end abrupt in this cases. Thy probably will mark players and accounts who arent paying. Maybe it will be easier to group those together.

We have still amazon rankings :lol

I know that preorder of that site are not 100% correct to foresee the future, but I think that the 100pt is really indicative of the flop ahead.
P4 was at 192 before release...and it will probably debut with 100k, right?

If you know Comgnet is not the end all be all, then you also must know is that you do not compared pre-orders for different games.

So, guys, Japanese market is much better than US one right now. How do you fell about it? XD

P.S. Comgnet hasn't updated since monday. Do someone know what's up with it? Ninjas, marines, something else?
Ask them on Twitter: https://twitter.com/COMG_GAME

I think it's pretty awesome, as long as niche publishers and the niche Japanese gaming fanbase in the Americas is still around, enough to support localization.

I will begrudgingly admit that retreating to handhelds was a very smart move for J-devs, even if it really hurt their mindshare in the US and the fact that I don't like handheld gaming much. It enabled them to be much more sustainable in the longrun.

Would be nice if J-devs got better with multiplatform gaming.

Hmm, I have to wonder what's up with God Eater 2. It seems like that game is taking a long time. Is a Vita SKU on the way like LBX?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

At least - but even a Vita exclusive could be possible. Maybe they will show it at Vita heaven this month.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!

At this point, given what happened with LBX, I'm not counting it out. Ports of PSP games aren't the ideal way of making the console sell more...but at least, it's something more concrete than what we've seen in these 6 months.

One of the rumors around TGS last year said it was moved to 3DS and Vita if I remember correctly. I think it came from the same source that broke Etrian Odyssey 4, Project Diva and Monster Hunter for 3DS.

GE2 for both 3DS and Vita and Etrian Odyssey were from a different source.

Nah, I think that was the source that had the bullshit rumors like Good-Feel doing a Yoshi's Island game.

Based on your earlier points, you would probably consider FFXI a flop. However, it turned out to be SE's biggest money maker ever because of the subscriptions even though it never sold anywhere close to previous FF games.

Also regardless DQX is success or not, you will not see another DQ MMORPG for a while. If it's success, SE will just release expansion for the game to main the subscription revenue stream. It's a lot less risky than releasing a brand new game (even if it's a sequel) and expect the same audience to jump in again. If it's not successful, then certainly there is no point to try again for a long time. Maybe they will try to make it a Social/Mobile game next time.

Oh yeah, if the game does good, we'll see a shit load of expansions.
As a recent example, just look at Monster Hunter Frontier on 360.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!

You mean PC too. It was getting expansions long before it got the 360 port. I don't think that version is solely the cause for the continued support of the game, even if they still port the new content to it. But I wouldn't expect that many expansions for DQX even if it does better than any other, MMORPGs can't just add a few monsters and a small area and call it a day like MonHun can. WoW for example hasn't had that many expansions despite being so long running and popular.

Even their last financial report I saw mentioned both versions as one game: "the online exclusive 'Monster Hunter Frontier Online' series (for PC and Xbox 360) showed steady growth supported by its stable popularity." It doesn't seem so relevant to me considering it was an already successful game in a long running series (all home system MonHuns had online play with fees, although only Frontier is treated more like an MMORPG so far, perhaps because it was easiest since it was on PC) ported to a new platform rather than an all new direction that we can't know how well it will be adopted by fans of the series, or even new players.

It's the most recent case on console, and Capcom itself said the game was successful.

Well, Final Fantasy XI got 4 expansions in just 5 years.

About DQX I think that to be considered good should not decrese too much from previous main episodes of the series.
The fee/bill could "cover" a decrease, but the gap should not be huge, at I fear it could be up to know, judging from the lack of interest that I feel through the web.

Changing topic: I've found the data for May:
http://andriasang.com/con1i4/may_software_revenues/

Nintendo was May's biggest publisher in terms of software revenues. Stats released today by Enterbrain and Famitsu show that Nintendo commanded 27.8% of software revenue shares for the month. Capcom came in second with 26.4%, followed by Namco Bandai at 12.2%, Konami at 4.3% and Square Enix at 3.0%.

Thhis is just software, if anyone find also hadware data...

What is too much? FFXI sold slightly over 700k all versions combined (the original release only did 150k), while the comparable number for FFX is 3 million (2.3m for the original release). Still FFXI was a hugely successful venture for Square Enix.
