Nintendo Downloads - June 2012

Think Donkey Kong Arcade.

Now add in 95 extra levels.

I don't agree with this.

Outside of the intro, I recall the levels playing quite significantly differently to DK's; much more emphasis on puzzle solving rather than simple traversal to get to the exit. Don't get me wrong, it's still a superb game... just not quite the same *sort* of superb game as the arcade title.

Of course the game plays differently. My point was that how DK 94 is an amazingly large game in comparison to the original.

I love how the game even does a fake out when you first play it
by having you play the original four DK levels and even make you think you've beaten the game. But nope, it's just the beginning!

I know, the game's still going to play the same. But I swear my eyes lit up when I saw the nighttime and ruins backgrounds.

Just wanted to say I enjoyed the "8-bit Summer" trailer from NOA, bought time they gave the VC some real love and actual promotion and SALES, more please. I already have Zelda since I'm an Ambassador and a few of the GB games in cart form but definitely excited.

I'm a little disappointed at the Sonic overkill but hopefully that will get it out of their system faster so we'll see more varied Game Gear games. And why are TG-16 games still MIA?

The SML sale is up on the NA eshop. First time downloading anything on there.

Man, what a ripoff, firstly I had no idea there was sales tax, second, I could only purchase credit in increments of $5. Now I've got $1.74 of absolutely useless eshop credit.

I know I'm LTTP, but this has really discouraged me from buying more on the eshop.

If you go to buy a game without enough money in your account, you can add the exact amount you need.

Doesn't help that Mario Land kinda sucks huh

Yup.

I don't know why I've put off buying SML. Now I have no excuse not to get it. It's not SML2 or 3, but I'll probably nostalgia pretty hard while playing it, at least.

Wow.

I wouldn't be upset if there was anything to buy on the eshop for $1.74. And that not even due to a dearth of good content, there's literally NOTHING cheaper than $1.99. So, I feel like I spent more money than I had to. Is that not legitimate grounds to be a little annoyed?

Entire soundtrack is great, maybe even the best 2d Mario soundtrack period

Everything else about the game, not so great

On world 2. That theme is great, already stuck in my head.

And yea, the controls are a little odd. Mario drops like a rock, and he doesn't stop on a dime like in the NES games. I'm definitely going to play through it though, seems interesting.

When the shop asks you if you want to add enough funds to buy the game, you say "yes".

I miss Hip Tanaka. Fuck Pokémon. :[

You got that Wow bevause both your issues are pretty easily circumvented. Set your region to a state with no digital sales tax, tap to purchase game and add amount directly.

Anyway, put that $1.74 towards a game that deserves it like Donkey Kong GB, Link's Awakening DX, or whatever.

No, it's not, because it allows you to add just enough money to your wallet to cover the cost of whatever you're buying. Since they added that feature through a firmware update, I've never had a single cent leftover in my wallet. And the next time you buy something, you can do that, too.

Let's not even get started on whining about having to pay sales tax on things that you buy.

I didn't know I could do that. Again I'm LTTP on eshop things. I'll look into that.

Take a look at the poster I quoted above, if someone were to actually tell me a solution to my problem, I'll gladly listen. Giving me a "wow" with absolutely no context does nothing to help me. It just starts useless little arguments like ours.

Thanks for the info, I'll look into all this eshop funny buisness right now. If anything, thanks for posting, because I wouldn't even figure this all out of I didn't come on GAF.

edit: set my region to Alaska, went to buy Gargoyles quest, and there was a button allowing me to purchase the exact amount.

Thanks everyone, yes, even you Roto

Sales tax is based on your location, which I believe is based on your card information.

You do not have to acquire credits first before trying to buy an app like it was on Nintendo's older systems. In addition to the $5 $10 $20 $50 credit options, there's one that says "Needed Funds" when you try to purchase a game without the necessary funds.

Just change the area code of your 3DS to one that doesn'thave sales tax.

Problem solved. Its what I did. Can't remember what area code I put though...

Anywayz: VIRTUAL CONSOLE IS ALIIIIIIIVE! FUCK YEA!

...almost all of the games that are coming in July don't interest me. But I don't care. Its good to see it alive.

I enjoyed Wario Land back in the day, so I will buy it and replay it day 1.

Kid Icarus 2, well...I found the first KI fun, but impossible. I guess I could beat it if I had a guide on how to get powerups since I am at world 3-4 and only have two life bars, and no upgrades at all.... :/ Don't wanna get KI2 before beating KI1. I really enjoyed KI1 until it became to hard.

Kirby Pinball...eh....I haven't really gotten into Pinball in general. So maybe this would be the cheapest game to try and get into it. Looks cool.

Sword of Hope II - It looks cool but I hAve to many unplayed RPGs at the moment. Maybe I'll get it later on if its a normal RPG. Need to look more into it.

Legend of Zelda: Doesn't count. I already have it. Save states will be welcomed though.

The others: Meh.

Doesn't help that Mario Land kinda sucks huh

I'd regard Mario Land as a better Mario game than Mario Land 2. Something about Mario Land 2 feels... off. Despite the *content* of Mario Land 1 being so unakin to what we're used to from Mario... the way it plays feels more 'right'.

I don't think either of them are great games so that's understandable, though if I were to pick which game I'd rather waste an hour with I'd take 2 over the original everytime

Think this is the third or fourth time I've started a Land vs Land 2 derailment in a Nintendo download thread though. My bag

I just finished Land 1 10 minutes ago. I thought it was great, what are you on!?

firstly I had no idea there was sales tax,

Change your state. Are you in Washington state?

Edit:
Beaten. :)

Edit2:
I prefer Mario Land 1 over Mario Land 2, as well. Mario Land 2 does play like a fuller platformer, but like SMB1 is more fun to play through again and again than SMB2, Mario Land 1 is more fun to play through again and again than Mario Land 2, for me.

You don't need to buy credit increments on the eShop. You can request to pay the required amount only for each title... at least that's the case for the EU shop.

Does changing your state really work? I thought because you had to put your state and county when making the purchase on the Wii and DSi, you'd be charged sales tax according to that, and changing it would cause the purchase to not be authorized? I've never really experimented with this.

I think Land 1 is an okay game, but it's incredibly brief and never gets much time to iterate on its core concepts. It lacks verticality, and many levels have unfortunate repeating geometric patterns. I elaborated a little bit more here. I think the fact that the game lasts less than an hour is probably its main weakness.

I have my 3DS set to California (both Console Settings and eShop Account) and I don't pay any taxes.

Alaska, Georgia and Florida also work as tax-free states, I think.

What do you use to buy points? After they "blocked" my credit card I've used points, but that's always worse.

Hey Brazil did you check the price of Mario Land here? 5 Reais...

<3 Nintendo!

It actually doesn't matter, since the price charged in the credit card bill is in dollar. The price in reais is just and aproximation so you know how much you will pay, but in the end, we pay the same price that USA eShop users do.

Wait, seriously? Well, time to change my eShop region to USA and enjoy some Club Nintendo survey goodness from now on.

Man, Slitherlink is hard! I dig it, but I was not expecting it to be so challenging.
Came to post exactly this. There is such a huge discrepancy between the little bit the tutorial gives you and even the first puzzle. A few puzzles in, and I feel like I'm just missing some piece of logic. I keep ending up completely muddled about where I've gone wrong.

I have a long car ride tomorrow and wanted to buy something from the eShop. I decided on Mighty Switch Force since it seemed way more worth it since the update. It's pretty great so far, I've only played the first level but it was pretty fun and trying to make the par time was also enjoyable.

I can't even imagine trying to do speed runs without that retry button, that must have been a ridiculous hassle!

It's charged in USD but the conversion is made based on the exchange rate at the time of the purchase. I just got my bill and here's the results of last month's purchases:

- Mighty Switch Force: $ 4.90 ($5.99 in the US eShop)
- Cat Frenzy: $ 1.46 ($5.99 in the US eShop)
- Ketzal's Corridors: $ 5.87 ($6.99 in the US eShop)

The beauty of it is: the eShop uses a static exchange rate. It ranges from R$ 1.5 to R$ 1.7 depending on the game price in the US eShop. With the actual exchange rate over R$ 2, it's better to use the Brazilian eShop.

I think what you're saying is pretty legitimate. The only thing I can think of to contest your points are: "well, it was a gameboy launch title..."

What I loved about Super Mario Land (in the 2 hours it took for me to beat it) was simply how fucking weird the game was. There's just so much in here that goes against your expectations and fucks with your perceptions about what a Mario (tonally) could be.

Shining examples are the koopas that explode when you stomp on them. The weird transforming "Oh! Daisy" bits. The weird fire flower properties. The 1ups are hearts. The star man theme is some royalty free greatness. Makes the game feel really weird and ghetto as fuck. The Sphinx enemies and the UFO aesthetics too. It's just a weird fucking game that was very clearly made by a different team than the NES games. It's a weird, unique fucking insane version of Mario and his world, and for that and that alone, I fell in love with it.

3 bucks well spent.

edit: oh and fuck me, the music kicks ass.

Thoughts on Summer of Virtual Console (lol): Kirby's Pinball Land and Wario Land are both welcome (and long overdue). I really likes Myths and Monsters. Tumblepop looks really weird, which usually means "buy" for me. It will be nice to have save states for Zelda.

Really irritated they literally picked the two worst Sonic platformers on the Game Gear to release. (At least it wasn't Sonic Drift?) Sonic Chaos is a great game, as is Tails' Adventure. Sonic 1, 2, and Tails' Sky Patrol would also have been acceptable alternatives. Hard to say if Spinball GG is worse. Maybe they want to get the crap out of the way first.

I bet we won't get Castle... I mean Master of Darkness forever. That also sucks.

Really glad that they're promoting it, in any case.

... also really glad that they're finally doing sales!

I couldn't have said it better. (I think I said much the same when I played it for the first time last year.) It's like... Suda 51 doing Mario, or something.
