Nintendo Downloads - June 2012

I am probably going to buy all five of the Game Boy releases in July. At least Kid Icarus II, Wario Land, and Kirby's Pinball Land.

Probably the other two. I'm not that familiar with them but they look good.

It actually doesn't matter, since the price charged in the credit card bill is in dollar. The price in reais is just and aproximation so you know how much you will pay, but in the end, we pay the same price that USA eShop users do.

You just blew my mind.

You just blew my mind.

He's wrong, though. These were taken from my latest CC bill:

- Mighty Switch Force: $ 4.90 ($5.99 in the US eShop)
- Cat Frenzy: $ 1.46 ($5.99 in the US eShop)
- Ketzal's Corridors: $ 5.87 ($6.99 in the US eShop)

The prices are converted BR$ to USD at the date of the purchase. Since the current exchange rate is higher than the one Nintendo used as a base for defining the BR$ prices (and those are fixed), the games turn out slightly cheaper than in the US store.

I think what you're saying is pretty legitimate. The only thing I can think of to contest your points are: "well, it was a gameboy launch title..."

What I loved about Super Mario Land (in the 2 hours it took for me to beat it) was simply how fucking weird the game was. There's just so much in here that goes against your expectations and fucks with your perceptions about what a Mario (tonally) could be.

Shining examples are the koopas that explode when you stomp on them. The weird transforming "Oh! Daisy" bits. The weird fire flower properties. The 1ups are hearts. The star man theme is some royalty free greatness. Makes the game feel really weird and ghetto as fuck. The Sphinx enemies and the UFO aesthetics too. It's just a weird fucking game that was very clearly made by a different team than the NES games. It's a weird, unique fucking insane version of Mario and his world, and for that and that alone, I fell in love with it.

3 bucks well spent.

edit: oh and fuck me, the music kicks ass.
I came here to say this. beaten the game today for the first time. it was like Mario on drugs, or Mario himself having a weird dream, always on drugs.

Now you blew my mind. lol

All the times I bought a game in the eShop, the price converted from BR$ to USD or USD to BR$ was the same, but the last time I bought something was march or beginning of April.

I hope this way to charge us continues as the Digital Distribution begins.

Land 1 sucks. I guess I didn't care for its weirdness.
I also just pay the tax in my state, and don't feel bad about an extra dollar and change on my account because I know I'll use it eventually.

I mentioned this earlier, but I recommend that everybody stay away from Sword of Hope II.

It's a first-person, turn-based RPG with incredibly slow-paced battles that initiate at almost every step. I bought it from eBay for $15-$20 last year after enjoying the original, but it was a complete waste of money.

I think Nintendo actually charges in BR$. I receive a SMS message every time I use my credit card. When I make Steam purchases, as example, the values come in USD but when I buy stuff in the eShop the values are in BR$.

So, why does it shows up converted to USD in the credit card bill? I think it's because all international transactions made in other currencies other than USD are converted to USD by the CC operator, even if the currency is BR$.

This is why I cannot wait for Nintendo to start selling retail 3DS games in the eShop: unless they fuck up the pricing, they are guaranteed to be far cheaper than buying physical copies (probably between R$60 and R$70). This is why I'm even considering buying a Wii U, since the Brazilian PSN Store and XBLA are massive rip offs (a brand new PS3 game costs R$ 169 at the Brazilian PSN *and* you need an international credit card).

Just went to the eShop to download the KH3D demo. I will take this opportunity to catalogue the obvious and easily correctable problems I ran into during my journey.

I went over to Game Demos, entered. First choice is Kingdom Hearts 3D. Underneath Kingdom Hearts 3D is red text (must be important, probably an error? why else would anyone use red text?) which says "Unavailable in Nintendo eShop". Now, when they say it's unavailable in the Nintendo eShop, they mean the full game, not the demo. Which would be okay if I was looking under a category for full games, but I'm not. I'm in Game Demos. I can see it on the top screen. In fact, the top screen art even says "Game Demo available". This is not a good UI.

I press A, which brings me to the game info page for Kingdom Hearts 3D. The game info page uses a rotating carousel UI, rather than the sliding drawer UI + speech bubble UI the rest of the eShop uses. Not really sure why, but I guess they figure having two different UIs is valuable here.

I press A on "Download Demo". I get an ESRB rating prompt, which I cannot use the A button to agree to. Okay, I use my finger to click next. It wants me to read the screen to make sure I understand how much space the game takes up. This information could have been combined with the near-empty ESRB page to have one general alert screen. Also, the top screen by default just tells me to read the bottom screen--as I scroll, the text occupies both screens. Why not fill both screens by default so that the user doesn't need to scroll to get the info they want? Again, I can't use A to download, I need to click on the Download button. Fine.

I get a prompt saying "Battery Power is running low. Please plug in the AC adapter and recharge the system." First of all, I have the AC adapter plugged in--the system knows this because the charging icon reflects it. But the text doesn't. Let's set aside the text error and then ask--why does this prompt exist at all? If the system dies during a download, let it resume when I turn it back on. Like my phone. Or anything else. I say OK (can't press A again) and am booted out of the download and back to the game info page. Even though I have the AC adapter plugged in.

My final question is: If the system knows I'm not allowed to download the game because I don't have enough battery life, why wouldn't that prompt occur BEFORE the ESRB and game space prompts?

a future 3DS owner question: are the 3DS demos time limited? I mean, do they remove them after sometime or is the only limitations time one may play a demo ?

not time limited, just play limited. most demos have a 30 play limit, but it varies a bit.

edit: ah, misread your question. umm, as far as I know, they haven't removed any demos yet (unlike on the Wii).

Number-of-launches limited.

My biggest grief with the current eShop is the inconsistent button behavior - I can back out from many screens/dialogs just by pressing 'B'. Not from some, though, where I have to touch a screen button. Problem is, there's not a single visual clue to hint which place abides to the 'B for back out' rule and which does not.

Heh, backing out is an interesting one across the system.

- Sub-screens in settings, eShop, etc. let you do it, others don't. As you note, no visual clues at all.
- Game Notes, the Friend List, the Browser, and Notifications want you to "press X to close", rather than pressing B. You can press Home to get out of these as well.
- Settings, which is an application, still has Press X to Close but this time you CAN'T press Home to get out of it, even though it's an application.
- The eShop's main level lets you press Home to exit, but not "X" or "B", but you can click on Menu and then "Return to Main Menu" to exit that way as well.

Yea Nintendo's store is a clusterfuck but honestly I could care less as i'm usually in there really quick and then out there's no reason really to spend a lot of time in the eShop.

Once that web interface goes online I'll never visit the eShop ever again.

Queueing up downloads through the web and sending them to the 3DS on Sleep Mode will be perfection.

Fuck yeah. Let's hope Nintendo doesn't change that before the end of the year so we can buy NSMB2, Paper Mario, and Luigi's Mansion for R$ 80!

I'm not 100% sure, but I really think that when I receive the SMS the price comes in USD. Maybe it changes from bank to bank, or flag, I don't know. (I use a Visa Itau Card)

But it would be beatiful to see retail games at the same price as US eShop. Even if they use the expensive dollar value of today, it would be nice to pay a fair price.

And it's changing even in PSN. Batman Arkham City was released in PSN US for U$$30 and in PSN BR for R$60 or something close to that. It looks like the things are changing a little here.

Oh, and I heard that New Mario 2 will cost 30 dollars. Is it true?

When the eShop first launched, retail games were listed in the Brazil eShop as costing R$68. I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping it stays like that. If NSMB 2 is actually $30, it means it would cost around R$50 using Nintendo's exchange rate. If it turns out like that, I'm going full digital on the 3DS, lack of accounts be damned.

Dude, I can't wait to buy retail titles on my 3DS for R$68, if that remains true. It's hard to care that the 3DS doesn't have an account system when you can buy games for less than half the price you would buy at most retailers (where games cost R$150 most of the times)!

Considering passing up SML. My SML cartridge still works perfectly fine, the eShop version is only 25% off (I guess I'm spoiled by Steam sales), and if an SML2 or Link's Awakening sale is coming I'd honestly rather save up for that. I still have my carts for both of those games too but they'd be great to have on my 3DS at all times.

everyone's loose cartridges just dropped in value.

SELL NOW!! SELL NOW!!!

That would be true revolution to gaming here. Please based Nintendo, do that!

Just reaf the Shantae news! Fuck yeah!!

I really like Zen Pinball 3D, but I don't seem to be able to get any further in the current tables. I still don't have any medals for Earth Defense or Excalibur, where I scored highest, and I have the same two medals each for Shaman and Eldorado that I got in the first week of play. I don't know if I just suck or I don't understand the goals. Are they really that hard?

So, I guess I'm trying to say, I am happy to throw money at another pinball game from Zen. I liked the tables a fair bit on 360, although Fantastic Four seems oddly plain.

I am a tiny bit irritated that they are being served up as a separate app instead of DLC. I guess they just couldn't wait for the official launch of DLC on eShop?

Zen Studios explained that they couldn't combine Zen Pinball and Marvel Pinball due to some Nintendo policy (they didn't go into detail), so both games are separate downloads with their own DLC.

Also, Zen Studios didn't get the SDK necessary to implement DLC until very recently, so I'm not sure if Marvel will have DLC support from day one, or if it will require an update down the road like Zen Pinball.

A few months ago, if I'm not wrong, Zen Studios said that the dlc tables for Zen Pinball 3D were already done, they were just waiting for Nintendo so they could release the dlc.

The tables are probably long done, but without the SDK, they had no way to offer them. Now they do.

Maybe? Both have strong and weak tables. Zen 3D is likely to get more and more diverse DLC, though. Excalibur in Zen 3D is probably the best table they've ever done, too.

Sure. The Marvel Pinball tables are all good.

Then, if you really want more tables, you can buy Zen Pinball. :P

Is Marvel Pinball for NA as well, or just Europe?

NA too!

From their blog:
We are excited to announce that Marvel Pinball 3D for Nintendo 3DS will be available on the Nintendo eShop in North America and Europe on June 28th! Iron Man, Blade, Fantastic Four and Captain America are now in stunning stereoscopic 3D!

Am I the only one who prefers the DSiWare/WiiWare shops to the 3DS eShop? The music is way better and I find games faster.

I prefer the Wii shop but the DSi shop is easily the worst marketplace for gaming on consoles in terms of performance.

has the wii shop improved then? not been in in well over a year but it use to be so slow and the music was annoying.

screenshots of games were really bad also.

So EU and JPN get 20 percent discounts off select e-shop titles while NA doesn't get anything except SML1 GB for a buck off. Granted I bought that one yesterday but still. I would have bought more if there were more titles discounted.

i'm hoping that NA is gonna have something like 1 game on sale every week, perhaps for the whole summer.

seems pretty weird to just discount one game for a week and leave it at that.

There's a news article on the NOA page that introduces it as the first "Game of the Week" thing, so it doesn't seem to be a one-off.

I thought Reggie said during Nintendo Direct that there would be a week long sale after SML1's sale.

Plus, I think it's been pointed out that SML1 was listed as "Game of the Week" or something, so maybe there's something to that.
