The Spoony Experiment

I also really don't understand the hate for crossovers. I'm not saying every single one of them are amazing or anything, but I think they serve a purpose. Sometimes it's just good to get 2 different opinions at once rather than 2 different videos covering the exact same movie. Like the Tekken crossover; I don't like or dislike Film Brain, but I thought it saved me the trouble of having to watch another video because both of their views were made clear in a single video.

I liked a few crossovers, I liked Snob and Lupa's crossover. I liked Linkara's and Critic's crossover for Superman IV.

They're fine if they're done right, but in many cases the styles of the reviewers don't mesh well, and there can be a distinct lack of chemisty. The Tekken review was one of the worst IMHO. There was no chemistry and for some reason Film Brian seemed to have dialled up his accent and unusual style of ending sentences to 400%. Styles sometimes clash, and they did there.

That's the number one reason most crossovers are awkward and unfunny.

I also really don't understand the hate for crossovers...
I think I personally automatically have a lower opinion of crossover videos because, for me, they got a reputation for being filled with skits and play fighting, especially since this seems to have started after the "Epic Brawl" nonsense with AVGN.

Also agree with what s_mirage said.

No need to wait for spoony's FFXIII review, this guy has got it covered.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47YPs-qwNQU&feature=player_detailpage#t=101s

Now this is actually pretty funny and goofy. It works because the sketch is still predominately about the game itself. At this point in Spoony's review, he's in black face doing Sazh behind a green screen to the sound of nobody laughing....apart from that deranged blogger (or Orin GA to call him by his real name). Besides, does anyone really want him to review something as apathy inducing as Final Fantasy XIII.

Somebody needs to tell him that it's the terrible games that he reviews that are the main attraction, not his terrible characters and green screen effects. Actually, I'm sure people have told him, but he just told them "I'm a genius. Now fuck off whilst I channel the diarrheatic, munged up bowels of comedy with yet another Dr. Insano cameo".

Someone should tell this to a lot of these reviewrs.
The only sketch i can stand are Red Letter Media's, and only if they don't go on for too long.

I followed Spoony since his Phantasmagoria 2 Let's Play and was always a great fan of his stuff. He uses his real self, instead of being in a role, which gave his work a much more personal and critical view then much other people. His taste was also something i could relate to. Still there were many times, i didn't like in his view and his behavior.

He his pretty much an Anti-Nintendo-Fanboy, people who hate the company no matter what they do. The reason for him sees to be his view that video games are much more of an story-driven media. The thing Nintendo never really cared for. Even through i could live with that, as long i could just ignore such topics.

The other problem his behavior around other people was harder to ignore. Spoony always seen as a guy, who loves to dominant other people. He even said ones, that he prefers to play the GM in an Pen&Paper RPG instead of being a player, because as a player he would always try to put him self in charge of the group. It also shows in his work, where he seen to prefer doing everything on his own without the help of others. An perfectionist. It only becomes a real problem, if he try to accomplish his empowering by humble other with his jokes. In one of his Pen&Paper RPG live-streams there was one German guy, who just were in the stream for a short time at the beginning. After he left Spoony made a lot of racist German jokes (the other in the steams as well, but he was the driving force). I never felt so offended by racism against me and my country (this is really hard to achieve, since normally we German just take such jokes with a bit of guilt). After that it was hard to ignore some of his undertone even in his older videos. But i am still not sure if it is an "American thing", since Douglas Walke trip to Austia also didn't show him in a good light and American have an known terrible behavior against other nations.

Seeing all the outrage behind his Twitter-Joke, i believe, there was much other things happening behind the scenes. The joke was stupid and bad-taste, but a little miss-step at best. There are many rape jokes around all media and Spoony together with other members of Channel Awesome even made some with him as the lead (Spooning with Spoony). The joke was just a trigger, not the bomb itself. The TNT properly lies in his relationship with the other members of Channel Awesome. It could be disgust against his behavior as an colleague, simply enviousness or just a bad day for everybody. Properly we never get an answer for this.

Me personally would hope he would take a step back and focus much more on his work. Twitter is an cold beast, which many stars and internet-stars can tell, and too easily things get out of proportion. Normally you can take the parties in another room and let them deal there problems personally. With stuff like Twitter everybody can join the discussion, what makes everything just much more horrible. Especially if your job is to make an soul striptease for the whole world.

Well, Red Letter Media do have an advantage in that they're pretty decent actors.

EDIT@Metal B: Actually, I think he's been totally consumed by this persona he's created. It's embarrassing to watch him scream his vitriol at other people, with so little regard for their opinion and with such unhealthy emphasis on being right and others being wrong. That Mass Effect 3 stream was actually quite a good window into his depression, as I just saw an unhappy guy rage at a computer screen over a video game ending, berating his audience in such a hostile and unfriendly manner. Bear in mind, this is such a far cry from the guy who would make v-logs answering questions from his community in an affable and warm manner 2 or 3 years back.

Yup, one of his only Nintendo related videos is about how much Metroid: Other M sucks.

Link/info please? Intrigued by this.

If you didn't like the ending to ME3, you are too stupid to understand it.

Oh boy...

Yup, one of his only Nintendo related videos is about how much Metroid: Other M sucks.

Don't forget his immense hatred of Legend of Zelda, and how he thinks it hasn't changed since the first game, or how one of his suggestions for improving it is a morality system.

He makes excellent use of straw man arguments, always a great way to prove a point.

I don't even agree with people who were up in arms about ME3's ending, but he doesn't make a very compelling argument.
"I figured it the ending before it even happened because I have an analytical mind. You're an idiot if you don't understand it. But so what if it isn't real, it's up to you to decide the ending."
Wait, huh? Jesus, what a self-absorbed asshole. I remember the MST3K inspired earlier years fondly, but the moment he did that Battle of Internet Fuckwits thing was the beginning of the end; it's pathetic that this is where it eventually lead.

The hell... ? He basically called every single person who hated the ME3 ending stupid.

Yeah, I can totally see Link having to choose between saving Zelda and cutting off her head.

Yeah, I can totally see Link having to choose between saving Zelda and cutting off her head.

He's saying "if you take it at face value you're fucking stupid", and is saying the Indoctrination stuff is the entire purpose.

But he's being very forceful and rude about it. And I'm pretty sure the ME3 thing on tuesday is going to shit on him.

So I started watching Let's Play Phantasmagoria 2 again today, probably the third or fourth time ever, but the last time was over a year ago; anyway, I started watching it again, and I just couldn't believe how awesome it was. It seriously is one of the funniest things I've watched on the internet, and easily the best thing on the site.

It's just basically joke after joke after joke, and they almost all seem to hit for me, or at least the vast majority of them. I don't know how scripted the jokes are, because there are spots where he seems to know what's coming, while there are other spots that seem to be completely off-the-cuff. Either way, I wish that Spoony would go back to that kind of style, and go through another semi-long game, hell another FMV adventure game would be awesome, in a similar way.

This video (series) was just so well-done. The game was dumb, but it had enough stuff material going on that Spoony could just riff on. I feel like Spoony should have been the MST3K for gaming that he was earlier on. You can tell (and he's said in the past) he loves that show, and tries to imitate it, and he was successful with the Let's Plays he did. It didn't need a "story-line" or dumb characters, but rather just solid commentary, and great quips. I noticed that I usually am indifferent, or even bored when I see his current stuff cut to him during reviews; not because I don't like him (now), but rather just that it's too many times, and it's usually for "story" things or just overblown anger that feels fake, while when you see him in person, which is rare, during the Phantasmagoria 2 Let's Play, you always are excited, because you get to take a break as he recaps or as you watch him play/watch something that he can't show. It's just great.

Like I said earlier though, I'm not a fan of really criticizing these guys, especially Spoony, because they know what they're doing usually. That's how they became successful in the first place, and who am I to critique him. With that said, if he ever did take a fan's advice, it would be to revisit his Let's Play series, and return to how he did jokes that way.

All the info I read on Spoony today was really disheartening.

I followed Spoony very heavily a few years ago, of course the the first review I saw was the FFVIII review, after that I watched all the videogame reviews he did, his written movie reviews were also great and well written.

I simply really hope that the dude ends up feeling better soon.

Also, LordKat berating that one guy from The Tester was fucking timeless, I was in the JTV livestream at the time and I've never really experienced a spectacle like that since. I think the dude's tester name was Big Fazeek, and Fazeek kept telling ridiculous lies over and over again, he also threatened LordKat's guests/co-hosts, which made LordKat furious.

That LP is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. It really is a shame he never hit that level again.

I didn't really follow the Mass Effect series (still need to play it), but didn't Bioware say that the Indoctrination theory was false?

I... um... uh... oh... :(

Why did I have to know about this? I thought his ME3 video (that I couldn't find on his site) was him raging at the ending like a normal person. I don't think I can watch his stuff any more knowing his depression has clouded his judgement in games.

That what bothers you? His depression, a very serious illness clouding his judgment about a game?

Well it's not like he knows the man personally. If his personal issues affect his ability to review games (his whole shtick) that seems like a perfectly legitimate reason to no longer follow his work. Also, not wanting to watch a socially hostile, slow-motion train wreck is a fair reason as well.

See, but you don't know the dude either, and that's what makes the last part weird to me. Even at that, why would him being "socially hostile" stop you from watching him review things, which usually involves him and nobody else?

Because it affects your opinion of him? Whether you know him or not is irrelevant to how you perceive him, and that is relative to how he presents himself in public.
Or –more specific to that video– that the facile mode of argument he showcases there can be seen to reflect how he argues about other things; it's plausible, then, that one would not care about what he has to say about anything else after having witnessed that. It shouldn't be that hard to understand even if you don't see it that way yourself.

I don't know, I don't see how being socially-hostile affects how I perceive him at what he does. If he's still hitting the same beats he does in the Phatnasmagoria 2 video, then I don't really see the difference.

Plus, it's not like Spoony was ever known for his unbiased view of things though. It was always good to hear reviews of stuff by him, but you understand it's him. It's his personality in the videos; you know Prometheus likely isn't the "worst movie ever" or whatever hyperbole filled comments he throws at things, but it's still interesting. He's likely always been socially hostile, or at least snarky, and he's always admitted that.

With that says, the personality is definitely different in the videos then it used to be, and I can understand if someone may enjoy his videos less if he does come off as a jerk to some other people though.

and just when I thought he can't sink any lower.

Wait, I thought I was the only one that didn't really like the characters and skits that Spoony and really all of these web-based people do. It's ok to have a main personality for the enture show, but it's the little MST3K-wannabe interludes that bother me. They make me feel uncomfortable, really.

Does ANYBODY like that stuff? Someone should tell them.

I like them in short bursts like the ones at the end of the FF retros. The extended skits like Black Lantern and Dr. Insano can be pretty grating.

And what is this Twitch TV shit in his dirty kitchen with a terrifyingly horrible mic?

Do people watch this? Why?

Oh, good lord, that fucking jester in one of the Ultima videos, he made Dr. Insanio seem like Buster Keaton. The truth is though that these characters and skits would work he could act, he can't act so every new character, every new skit descends further into cringe-worthy territory. If you can't act, please, for the love of God, don't. Please, somebody break into his house and steal his green screen and costumes.

It's a shame, because he's quite an engaging presence when he wants to be and is very comfortable talking in front of a camera. His V-logs can be entertaining given the right subject matter; some of those counter monkey stories are pretty good, and this is coming from someone who has never played D and D in their lives. He just needs to be more disciplined in his approach to those and limit them to 15 minutes at most.

His website seems to be all over the place in terms of content. A video review here, a pointless e3 clip there. I get the impression he doesn't really have an idea how to develop his persona outside of the angry reviewer shtick, so you get these middling e3 videos that kind of don't have a place alongside his main game/movie reviews.

And what is this Twitch TV shit in his dirty kitchen with a terrifyingly horrible mic?

They like to be abused, continually by an angry man who had to explain Mass Effect to the brain damaged, stupid morons who lack the intellectual capacity to decode the games inner meanings. Because, y'know, he's seen some sci-fi films, so only he can explain it to us.

You know for all the fuss over his twitter antics, at least it doesn't creep me the out like his twitter account for his dog. Tweets such as:

"lol daddeh is dressed funneh"
"i eated 1 of daddehs revue things and nao hes super mad at me i in twuble =("
"daddeh got me a new rope becos i eated teh old 1"
"im not a dragin im a pretteh princess okai"
"he sez mebbe i eated a bad thing but iz imposibul becos i m a gud puppeh"

They aren't cute and endearing like I'm sure he thinks they are, they're really fucking creepy in a they-sound-weirdly-sexual kind of way.
