what is the secret to not getting permanently banned from NeoGAF.com?

I think I'm generally an inoffensive poster but I remember posting in a horrible thread in the gaming forum early on. It didn't result in a ban but I feel like it has secretly dogged me ever since.

Conversely, does troublemaker require a lot of bans?

Not necessarily.

I hope I'm not on the naughty list.
I wonder if there are other categories too.

GAF Gold members.

This just made me realize that NeoGAF is actually quite a bit like high school. There are clicks.

Cliques. We keep track of those and attempt to prevent their solidification. GAF is not intended to be like reddit with a series of subforums that have nothing to do with one another and, perhaps, have passionate distaste for one another; we deliberately try to cultivate a single community where anyone can talk to anyone else in a reasonable, friendly manner. Some of these cliques have gotten out of hand -- exhibiting extreme hostility to the rest of GAF and seeing themselves as a separate forum inside the forum, often feeling the general NeoGAF rules should not apply to them -- and some of those cliques have been forcefully dispersed.

Opiate, with this information, have you guys ever prevented something from happening before it happens ala Minority Report (that's not realistically possible I think)?

Nonetheless, you guys have offered a pretty fascinating look into the mind of a mod. Thankfully in all these 4 years I've been on GAF, I've never been a trouble maker at all because I reflect the way I act in real life (I intend on keeping it that way). I already learned the do's and dont's of GAF as well to lurk in 51% of the threads I go to, post in 49% of them that are relevant to my interests.

Am I too late for a report card? I'm too late for a report card.

I find a great, great way to avoid getting banned on GAF is to start using USER CP. Browsing NeoGAF like that, if you post in a thread it gets added to your subscriptions. As I don't like adding new subscriptions, either because I'll feel like I have to delete them later because the thread dies, or I don't like to deal with the clutter of dealing with too many subscriptions at once, I rarely post outside the niche communities like HaloGAF or PoliGAF. Outside those two communities I mainly lurk. Unless I make a thread or I'm very, very interested in the subject (like Half-Life 3 rumor threads). I think my last created thread was Portal 2.

I dunno. This may only apply to me.

Not just you. I always keep a tab open with my subscriptions. I only tend to go to OT/Gaming when there's a lull in activity.

Yep I love subscriptions. I just deleted my entire subscription folder since I was not managing it well (at all). It was 809 subs haha, time to start fresh!

I've see a few people who mainly post in the OT talk about how they dislike the gaming side (I am guilty of this). Would the OT itself count as a subcommunity?

But of course. Subscriptions are absolutely important especially on the go such as for a GAF meet up and even encouraged by the mods. My subscription folder is full of them, but no two Gaffers are going to have the same tastes; in my case, I like to post all over the place, but lurk in OT community threads or controversial threads such as the PoliGAF thread.

You mean like the Rockband thread and the NBA thread, if I remember correctly? That's pretty interesting.

I don't think so. We're mostly talking about individual thread communities, such as the GayGAF community or Poligaf community (both of which are fine, by the way, and are only being used as examples precisely because they're fine).

I did have a growing hatred for Gaming side.

But just steering clear of console wars and intense gaming discussion.

It's not so bad.

"intense gaming discussion"

I don't want to say the "fanboy" word but, just intense discussions over a game, it's dev and so forth. HUGE threads with maybe 100 + pages too.

So much arguing and silly stuff. Same reason I stay away from the super serious threads in OT

What ever happened to the "contribution to society" guy from a while back. Does he still work at Microsoft? I can't remember if he was banned or just mocked.

I think it's surprising that the circumstances have produced this thread, as if there's some sort of cosmic and arbitrary code to being banned from NeoGAF. In my experience, people, by and large, get banned for saying something stupid or bigoted. I don't particularly check my posts for things that might get me banned and I've never been banned.

In fact, I feel that there is an excess of posters who probably should be banned as opposed to the other way around.

I'm going to sub to this thread just so I can come back to it in a couple years to see all of the posters who we lost in the struggle, and to get a better idea of who to pay attention to.
