How will this gen be remembered?

For the most part regarding games I play,.I'm going to remember it for a lot of crybabies, whining, nerfing and patching to cater to the masses.

Hopefully it will be remembered for QTE's, chest high walls, and release-day DLC, because none of that stuff better exist on the same scale in the future.

Maybe for the rebirth of indie games.

No new games this summer? Really? I'm still having trouble keeping up with all the new 3DS games, and that's only one system.

Anyway, I don't really care how other people end up viewing this generation (or last generation, since we're already in the 8th generation of handhelds), but to me it's probably been the best so far (as a Nintendo gamer, that is), for many reasons (especially if you're including the 3DS). Though I've enjoyed all generations of video games since I started gaming pretty equally.

Cynicism aside. We saw the rise of digital distribution(with a resurgence of indies eclipsing that of the shareware days) and a more general interest in esports that doesn't involve quake or starcraft.

as the worst one yet.
When it comes to fanboy wars and negativitiy, i agree. I've never seen such much negative talk in another console generation before, but i wasnt really much online on forums back in the previous generations, so that probably explains why i have this experience in this console generation.

When it comes to the games however, i havnt played this much on consoles since the NES era.

Activision.

Edit: To clarify it will be remembered for Guitar Hero, COD, and Skylanders. The generation of Dudebro and crappy plastic add-ons (so it will probably be remembered for the Wii and motion controls as well). You people who think this gen will be remembered as the generation of DLC are in for a shock.

The "money over everything" generation

Back in the days, they at least tried to seem like they want to put a smile on your face with their products.

But now they don't even hide their greed. It's such a aggressive industry right now with DLCs, pre-order bonuses, special and collector's editions, etc.

So many fucking studios closed down. So many bad and most importantly uninspired games came out. So many stupid peripherals and hardware addons.

I'm really scared at where the industry is directed.

Hopefully it will be remembered as the colossal disappointment and disgrace that it was. From a business and games perspective.

I bet it won't look to bad. Next gen consoles will probably be worse with more big publisher crap and weird policies.

Which is why I will just stick to pc gaming next gen..

The end of clear-cut 'generations', probably.

This most likely. It has already started with the Wii being technologically out of date and fading out in the middle of the generation. Include smart phones, social apps, and other forms of gaming that exist outside of the console cycle now and there is no clear cut generational leap.

This generation gave life to...

-DLC
-the rise of cinematic garbage
-online gamin'

The big three will be remembered as folows:

Sony -
FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY YOO ESS DOLLAHS

Microsoft -
RRoD

Nintendo -
Motion controls
but instead of improving motion controls even further, took a step backwards and went with a traditional controller... with a screen on it. *is angry*
Old tech can still sell.

I think that this is pretty generalizing. In every generation, many developers put a lot of hard work into their games, trying to make it as good as possible. Games have become a lot more expencive, so the risk is a lot higher. That is why the business model also changes, trying to minimize the risk. It doesnt necessarily have to be about greed.

I think people will say it started well, but then after call of duty exploded and became the biggest thing since slice bread most games released became gradually tailored to the cod crowd. We have a clear decline of some genres like the wrpg like mass effect which was a victim of the transformation I described.

Both online play and dlc were around last gen.. and if you consider PC they were around a long time ago, but DLC on pc was usually free or even made by gamers themselves. :/

lol at all the negativity in here. The "gamer on the internet" negativity is something that will definitely be remembered this gen.

There were definitely some bad things this gen but I don't get how ones can say that the gen was bad as a whole.

Anyways:

*Jaded gamer overreactions on the internet
*Shooters
*Western RPGs
*BIG game worlds
*The resurgence of fighting games
*The resurgence of Platformers
*Music games
*HD gaming
*Huge increase in AAA game budgets (for better or worse)
*Motion Controls
*Growth of online/social console gaming
*Growth of digital distribution/DLC
*Indie Games
*Growth of Xbox Brand
*Playstation brand popularity drop in comparison to previous gen

The "me too" generation. Although, this mainly applies to shooters. Thankfully, they're were some standouts that ranged from entertaining to pretty great that eschewed the the modern military theme. On the hand, Taking the concept of DLC and screwing it up more often than not. Examples are pieces of content that we used get on the disc that was accessible from the beginning or unlockable from doing this or that. Although, the worst case scenario is putting the true ending as DLC. It seems the worst offender of this was Asura's wrath.

I'm honestly surprised no one in this thread has tried to claim most games this gen were sub-HD with a nauseating framerate.

1983-1985: First Chapter.

I managed to buy 65 of them this gen so far. Granted 46 are on handhelds.

jrpgs are nowhere near dead. They just returned to the same niche status they had before the PS1.

If they can't be sustained on homeconsoles they died on homeconsoles. Everyone is capable of developing for toasters and electronic calculators.

Consoles becoming more than just gaming machines- rising complexity and sophistication.
DLC.
Motion controls.
Wide adoption of online gaming.
The console industry struggling to adapt to new sales models. By comparison the PC market has excelled in this area.
Over the shoulder shooter and FPS dominance. Corridor shooters are sadly part of this.
Market divergence towards AAA and indie, with a struggling middle. This middle has provided lots of interesting titles, but many have caused financial problems for developers. Make or break nature due to rising budgets.
Increasing competition for time and minds from social gaming and phone/tablet gaming.
Despite the negatives, a huge number of fantastic titles.

One where you have probably played more games than you ever had in a console generation, but with less standout examples of gameplay that you will want to return to 5 years from now.
