Star Fox dev: Miyamoto "like a slightly more friendly Steve Jobs, but just as cutting

Eurogamer said:
Behind the scenes, Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto is "like a slightly more friendly Steve Jobs but just as cutting".
That's the description of Q-Games founder Dylan Cuthbert, who has worked with Nintendo on the majority of the Star Fox series.
"His private face is different to his public face," Cuthbert explained during a recent GAME Facebook fan Q&A, when asked about his most inspirational industry figure.
"His style of chasing ideas and cutting through bulls*** is brilliant. Internally he's kind of like a slightly more friendly Steve Jobs, but just as cutting."
Miyamoto has previously admitted keeping a close eye on Nintendo's various development teams, and "upending the tea table" on projects not to his satisfaction.
Looking to the future, Cuthbert added that he already had ideas for how the Wii U GamePad could be used in a new Star Fox game, although whether he works on another remains Nintendo's decision.
"Those questions are best geared towards Miyamoto," he smileyed. "I know what I'd try and do with that tech, but at the end of the day, the ball's in Nintendo's court.
"I like to work on a variety of games, or life gets a little boring! Star Fox is a great world and series of characters, and one day I'd definitely like to go back to it and expand it further."

Unsurprising. The best directors/producers in any industry know when to let people do their thing but know when to draw the line and say "No," to some thing(s). It's probably the most important skill to have.

Steve jobs was constantly changing the landscape of technology over and over, I wouldn't put him on Jobs level

Edit: jobs also changed the culture of design and was essentially created a new sub culture that many have tried to emulate. He was just on another level. They are both legends regardless though

Not really surprising. The guy appears harmless but he is obviously incredibly smart and competent, and likely highly demanding of others.

"Slightly More Friendly Steve Jobs" sounds like a meme picture thing, with Miyamoto saying things that are smart and cutting but a little softer than what Jobs would say.

Then you must've started gaming this generation or something. Throughout all of gaming, Miyamoto has always been the one pushing ahead. Hell, he didn't even need new technology to make a brilliant idea. He looked at what was already around and flipped the hell out of it. Lord help us all if he aims at a FPS.

Edit: Oh you were kidding. Sorry, sarcasm isn't apparent in text.

Well, there goes the thread.

If Nintendo wants to give Star Fox another go I'm hoping the look up Treasure's number instead.

Not too surprising if you look back at this quote he made when asked about the Playstation Move:

'I will spend my last dying breath weekend if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's Nintendo's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I'm going to destroy write a strongly worded letter to Android Sony, because it's a stolen similar product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war get mildly upset on this.'

Out come the cult of apple.

The article is commenting on the fact that Miyamoto like Jobs could be a bit of an asshole though quite brilliantly.

Nothing more so you can go back to your cult of apple worship

I am trying to find him with a non-PR face. It's proving very difficult.

It must be quite a shock to see him with his 'business face'.

Prior to the I brand, what the hell did Apple really do? Macs still are over priced garbage and haven't been good sense the apple II. And even then, the I line isn't innovative. The smart phone was around before Iphone, the mp3 player was around before Ipod. Ipad is still dumb (IMO). So tell me, what exactly did Jobs and Apple do that was so great?

Hmm. He acts like Jobs when there's not a camera around? I guess that sort of follows, but it's a shame if he's not really a nice man.

Brand new Wii U Starfox from Q Games? Yes, please.

Well yeah. But I still would like a multiplayer with 32 players, huge maps, and the ability to get out of the R-wing and go on foot or in Tank.

Hmm. He acts like Jobs when there's not a camera around? I guess that sort of follows, but it's a shame if he's not really a nice man.

He probably is, but when you're the boss you have to act like the boss. Can't take shit and gotta push to the limit you know?

And this guy is probably having the same type of impact on Nintendo that Steve had on Apple. Seriously, Nintendo someday will probably lose the magic. 'Cause the magic is this man.

I can't wait for the blowing and ground slapping mechanics to be added to this game.

I honestly don't care for Miyamoto meddling in franchises that he didn't originally have a part in.

The dev obviously meant to compare them in their roles as leaders in their companies, not as a literal comparison as they work(ed) in totally different fields. Jobs designed tech and Miyamoto makes interactive art. Or do you think that designing computers and mp3 players is the same as being a game designer?

He probably is, but when you're the boss you have to act like the boss. Can't take shit and gotta push to the limit you know?

Well, sure. Leaders have to lead. But Jobs harangued and browbeat and shamed his underlings to get his way. It's not a way I'd like to think of Miyamoto.

When Creativity management is due, I honestly think that this is the right approach : you need to break the flow of ideas sharp if you want to launch talented people on another track, otherwise, they will still chew on the same stick and iterate around the same concepts without challenging the base idea.

I know my job is not enitrely "creative" in the sense that you could find in the entertainment industry, but I appreciate my director for being "straight in your face" when a cut is due to avoid a sub-par idea from landing in a quality project, that makes me turn my head 180° and makes me explore new possibilities.

Edit : I'm in favor of the "cutting" aspect, not moral harrassment, just to be clear, because Jobs has been known for troubling behaviours as well ;)

I have read comments over the years from other developers witch seem to indicate:

Myamoto acts like Tingle in public.

But behind the scenes he is Gannon.

Also I see Jobs as a buisness man more than an innovator.

His recent biogrpahy seems to indicate that his talent was to push people to get things done that were seemingly impossible.

He surrounded himself with creative people who he could push to accomplish these goals.

He even pushed Woz to create breakout in 4 days.
