Don't even get me started thinking about how NBC getting Sunday Night Football destroyed NFL Primetime on ESPN, the greatest TV show in history
Do we have to go through this story again? Again?
First off, during the contract for the Olympic games, The IOC have talked to each of the networks, CBS first. Les Moonves has no balls and said no.
ESPN went next, But Disney wanted FULL Advertising Rights, and wasnt going to pay beyond 2016.
Fox was the dark horse, but Murdock wasnt willing to Pay beyond a certain date.
NBC with Comcast was willing to Pay beyond 2016. Thats how they won the contract.
Conserning the NFL, NBC has rights to Highlights (new contract gives them a new show along with extended rights) until 12:01 AM - ESPN has to wait. ESPN did this to themselfs. The NFL TOLD them they could have BOTH Sunday and Monday nights but they had to pay the same rate. ESPN Balked. NBC came in, took the Sunday Night Contract by luck (and at that time the NFL was worried about the Strike). Forcing ESPN to take the Monday Night Franchise - for a MUCH higher rate (1.8 BILLION) with no playoffs.
If anything, the fault belongs on Les Mooves, ESPN and Fox. They refuse to step up. ESPN being the worst offender because they have spent the same amount of money for the olympic games on College Ball (a new Bowl game, rights to ACC and some SEC games) and have lost the world cup to Fox, which can now use the rights as a stepping stone to get the Games. ESPN continues to make bad bets, after bad bets.
And as for the NFL, the new contract is locked until 2022. Their Online Streamer (which is based on Sliverlight, used in the recent Super Bowl) is the best the US has right now. (Yes, better than ESPN3's)
Which leads into my issues with the coverage. Where the hell was Collinsworth? You put CHODE MAN over Collinsworth? WHO DOES THAT. Costas looks lost without him. There YOUTUBE STREAM is FUCKING HORRIBLE and they should be ASHAMED even worse than the tape delay they did that shit. You had somebody in NeoGaf that worked on the server end in 2008 for Microsoft and everybody here respected the Job they did 4 years ago. BBC Remade There Iplayer just for these games and it has been ON POINT.
As for the Tape Delay, you have to see it from the stand point of the Network. NBC has been HORRIBLE in Prime Time for YEARS. The only thing that has been working for them is the NFL and the Olympics. I see it the way Burke and Lazarus saw it - do i want to screw over my Affilates and do the more important events live - and the weaker events at night when the network is strugging to have a major hit (comedy or drama) or do i want the prime time showcase? This is the only way the network can get eyeballs on the network show they can have shows watched and to help NBC Sports Network. Is it working? The Internet says No, The ratings tell me diffrent.
But this leads into Sports Rights. MLB has gone NO where with Fox, and ESPN only got better too little too late. NBC has get the rights back for Baseball, Nascar and NBA/WNBA regardless of what the Internet is saying now. Because in the end of the day, ESPN cannot prove they have grown out of its shell. Its stuck on the college ball game when their BCS bullshit is over, and they never aired a Super Bowl nor a Olympic games. I know they did better at World Cup, Euro Cup and maybe they covered Wimbledon half decently, however it doesnt matter because once you get the Olympic games, it shows that the Sports Division has MATURED. That is what is missing from ESPN. Maturity. Yes, you can complain im wrong, misguided full of shit. But what Made ABC Sports? Wide World Of Sports and its Biggest Event - The Olympic Games. Period. Football does good things but everybody remembers what was done at the games. ESPN and Disney Balked, and for the "World Wide Leader In Sports" its a greater crime than any tape delay.
