There have been a lot of nit picky trolls in the Wii U threads as of late so I wanted to write a post about why I am excited about the Wii U and why you should also. And to the trolls, lighten up guys, a new generation is right around the corner and I don't know about you but this is the one time in a consoles lifespan that I feel like a little kid again! Super excited when I hear any rumors or speculation about the Wii U or the next systems from Microsoft and Sony!
1) For the first time ever, Nintendo is launching ahead (by at least a year) of it's competitors. Imagine by the time the next Xbox and Playstation come out the Wii U will likely have an installed base of millions. Reggie even said that this was part of their plan to get more 3rd party support. Once the installed base is there publishers are going to be much more likely to include the WiiU in their multi platform plans and maybe even make some cool exclusive titles.
2) This system is actually a generational leap over it's predecessor. The Wii had some awesome games but as far as hardware prowess goes it was not a huge jump over the Gamecube. So sure we got a new Zelda but it was the same one also on the GameCube (Twilight Princess) and then we got another Zelda (Skyward Sword) and it was a great game but was it really a huge jump visually from the one that came so many years ago on the Gamecube (Wind Waker)? Rest assured that the next Zelda on Wii U will not only make us salivate from a gameplay perspective but it will surely make our eyes bleed in delight! The same goes for all of Nintendo's franchises. HD Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros, and who knows what else is on the way!
3) Launch Lineup is actually pretty awesome (in a Vita sort of way). Nintendo is not releasing a big first party heavy weight but will have several smaller but promising games (Pikmin 3, Nintendoland, New Super Mario Bros. U, Wario game). However to round out the lineup they'll have some promising 3rd party exclusive titles in Project P-100, ZombieU, and Rayman Legends. To further round out the lineup, the WiiU is getting something the Wii lacked big time . some big multiplatform titles from 3rd parties with Assassin's Creed 3, Batman: AC, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Sure, there are still some big titles absent from that list (most notably Bioshock Infinite & Resident Evil 6) but it will add some much needed variety to Nintendo's system. Overall, if you go back and list the launch titles for the 360 and PS3 and compare it to the launch window titles of the WiiU, the WiiU comes out on top.
4) Nintendo is taking the lead in Digital Distribution. The Big N is usually behind the times in the world of Digital but they are actually leading the way with day and date release of full titles on a console right from the get-go. I also read a report that they are offering some very tempting incentives to get 3rd parties to do the same. Now if only they would have included a hard drive to actually store the games. They did the next best thing with SD and external hard drive support. So for less then the price of a 320GB 360 hard drive you can get a 1.5 TB (1,500 GB) hard-drive. Enough space to store all the games you'll ever want for the entire generation.
5) Nintendo is becoming more friendly to indie and small devs. Several reports have come out that indicate Nintendo has been changing their culture to be more welcoming to Indie devs. For example the devs of World of Goo had this to say: On the business side, Nintendo of America has been an amazing partner to work with; theyre supportive without burying you under mountains of paperwork. Besides PC & Mac, their next game, Little Inferno has only been confirmed for WiiU. We've seen this on 3DS where titles like VVVVVV, Mutant Mudds, and Mighty Switch Force! not only get released but are promoted by Nintendo with Nintendo even being proactive by putting them on sale and giving them front page placement in the eShop.
6) Controls will not dissuade 3rd party devs this time around. With dual analogs, shoulder buttons and front four face buttons packed in the box the WiiU should be ready for all of the popular games and genres from 3rd party devs.
7) Potentially the multimedia system of choice. The usual candidates are there with Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Instant video support already announced. The WiiU controller should make controlling the viewing experience intuitive. However to top it off the controller is actually a universal media remote. With more and more people going to streaming & over the air programming instead of cable this could be a bigger deal then people realize. For example, I don't have cable so I don't have a cable remote. If the Wii U gamepad can turn the TV on, change the volume, channels, and inputs, I can honestly put my TV remote away as I won't need to use that frequently.
8) Wii Backwards compatibility. In a world where Microsoft and Sony have been spotty about including backwards compatibility the WiiU will come with full backwards compatibility from day 1. So for all of those hardcore gamers that sold their Wii or rarely touched it, I'm sure you have some Wii gems you never got around to, whether it was one of the excellent Galaxy tittles, or Xenoblade, or Skyward Sword or a number of other excellent titles (Metroid Prime Trilogy, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Zack & Wiki, Sin & Punishment, Punch-Out!, The Last Story) you can now check them out on the cheap with the WiiU.
