There have been a lot of nit picky trolls in the Wii U threads as of late so I wanted to write a post about why I am excited about the Wii U and why you should also. And to the trolls, lighten up guys, a new generation is right around the corner and I don't know about you but this is the one time in a consoles lifespan that I feel like a little kid again! Super excited when I hear any rumors or speculation about the Wii U or the next systems from Microsoft and Sony!

1) For the first time ever, Nintendo is launching ahead (by at least a year) of it's competitors. Imagine by the time the next Xbox and Playstation come out the Wii U will likely have an installed base of millions. Reggie even said that this was part of their plan to get more 3rd party support. Once the installed base is there publishers are going to be much more likely to include the WiiU in their multi platform plans and maybe even make some cool exclusive titles.

2) This system is actually a generational leap over it's predecessor. The Wii had some awesome games but as far as hardware prowess goes it was not a huge jump over the Gamecube. So sure we got a new Zelda but it was the same one also on the GameCube (Twilight Princess) and then we got another Zelda (Skyward Sword) and it was a great game but was it really a huge jump visually from the one that came so many years ago on the Gamecube (Wind Waker)? Rest assured that the next Zelda on Wii U will not only make us salivate from a gameplay perspective but it will surely make our eyes bleed in delight! The same goes for all of Nintendo's franchises. HD Zelda, Metroid, Smash Bros, and who knows what else is on the way!

3) Launch Lineup is actually pretty awesome (in a Vita sort of way). Nintendo is not releasing a big first party heavy weight but will have several smaller but promising games (Pikmin 3, Nintendoland, New Super Mario Bros. U, Wario game). However to round out the lineup they'll have some promising 3rd party exclusive titles in Project P-100, ZombieU, and Rayman Legends. To further round out the lineup, the WiiU is getting something the Wii lacked big time …. some big multiplatform titles from 3rd parties with Assassin's Creed 3, Batman: AC, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Darksiders 2, Mass Effect 3, Ninja Gaiden 3, and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Sure, there are still some big titles absent from that list (most notably Bioshock Infinite & Resident Evil 6) but it will add some much needed variety to Nintendo's system. Overall, if you go back and list the launch titles for the 360 and PS3 and compare it to the launch window titles of the WiiU, the WiiU comes out on top.

4) Nintendo is taking the lead in Digital Distribution. The Big N is usually behind the times in the world of Digital but they are actually leading the way with day and date release of full titles on a console right from the get-go. I also read a report that they are offering some very tempting incentives to get 3rd parties to do the same. Now if only they would have included a hard drive to actually store the games. They did the next best thing with SD and external hard drive support. So for less then the price of a 320GB 360 hard drive you can get a 1.5 TB (1,500 GB) hard-drive. Enough space to store all the games you'll ever want for the entire generation.

5) Nintendo is becoming more friendly to indie and small devs. Several reports have come out that indicate Nintendo has been changing their culture to be more welcoming to Indie devs. For example the devs of World of Goo had this to say: “On the business side, Nintendo of America has been an amazing partner to work with; they’re supportive without burying you under mountains of paperwork.” Besides PC & Mac, their next game, Little Inferno has only been confirmed for WiiU. We've seen this on 3DS where titles like VVVVVV, Mutant Mudds, and Mighty Switch Force! not only get released but are promoted by Nintendo with Nintendo even being proactive by putting them on sale and giving them front page placement in the eShop.

6) Controls will not dissuade 3rd party devs this time around. With dual analogs, shoulder buttons and front four face buttons packed in the box the WiiU should be ready for all of the popular games and genres from 3rd party devs.

7) Potentially the multimedia system of choice. The usual candidates are there with Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Instant video support already announced. The WiiU controller should make controlling the viewing experience intuitive. However to top it off the controller is actually a universal media remote. With more and more people going to streaming & over the air programming instead of cable this could be a bigger deal then people realize. For example, I don't have cable so I don't have a cable remote. If the Wii U gamepad can turn the TV on, change the volume, channels, and inputs, I can honestly put my TV remote away as I won't need to use that frequently.

8) Wii Backwards compatibility. In a world where Microsoft and Sony have been spotty about including backwards compatibility the WiiU will come with full backwards compatibility from day 1. So for all of those hardcore gamers that sold their Wii or rarely touched it, I'm sure you have some Wii gems you never got around to, whether it was one of the excellent Galaxy tittles, or Xenoblade, or Skyward Sword or a number of other excellent titles (Metroid Prime Trilogy, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Zack & Wiki, Sin & Punishment, Punch-Out!, The Last Story) you can now check them out on the cheap with the WiiU.

I'll buy a Wii U just like everyone did "in a Vita sort of way."

Looking back on this post I'm not ever sure it makes sense, just poking fun at the Vita.

I'll have a Wii U eventually if they get some good games like Xenoblade and stuff on there.

I know that you will get a lot of cynical snark for number 1.

"Nintendo isn't launching ahead, they're launching 7 years late" or something similar inane and petty.

Then you'll have Nintendo fans jump to the rescue, just to get these responses:

"Well not everyone has to like Nintendo" (that's why it's totally ok to shit up threads with hit and run posts, and the usual snark)

/thread.

Personally for me the reasons to be excited is that it is finally a new console after so many years. This industry desperately needs a breath of fresh air.

No offense but this is not gonna happen. When the new Xbox and PS arrive WiiU won't get simple ports of these games due to the lack of power. On the other side the new Xbox and PS could get games with underwhelming graphics to make a port for the WiiU.

"3) Launch Lineup is actually pretty awesome (in a Vita sort of way)."

What. Vita had one of the biggest launch lineups in history.

What have you done, son

1) Theyre launching 7 years after their competitors.

2) Thats easy when you essentially dont do a generational leap the last time round.

3) If it wasn't for Ubisoft, I'd have no interest. Nintendo themselves certainly arent bringing the noise like Sony did with an Uncharted, Wipeout, and more.

4) You don't get to take the lead by finally showing up to the party thats available on every other platform. UK 3DS pricing doesnt fill me with glee.

5) Proof is in the pudding, it seems like the same set of Wii and 3DS supporters rather than a groundswell of new devs taking heed.

6) Controls won't, but power will again.

7) In no way is it the multimedia system of choice. No blu-ray for a start, and Nintendo hasnt had a history of producing amazing set top boxes with many file format support.

8) I am interested to see if any upscaling and smoothing is not going to render Wii games on HD screens as horrifying. I guess its gonna be neat for pad play though, presuming thats supported and not another case of the system locking into Wii only mode and thus not using any of the WiiU's actual streaming stuff.

I don't care about the points in the OP (it doesn't mean I didn't read it). It's games and system sellers that make me purchase a system, not if it comes out a year earlier than its competitors. If it doesn't have games then I won't buy it like the VITA. Outside of Zelda, I dont see anything that intresting me.

Didn't stop devs from maining dev on PS2 and then just porting to Xbox and GameCube.

You're also assuming that every developer is just going to drop their UE3 licenses overnight, while ignoring the reasons why they all bought UE3 in the first place. A whole bunch of devs are going to be just fine staying with UE3, which works on Wii U, which means they have an easy way of making a WiiU/PS4/720 game. Shit, look at the big devs still using UE2.x variants.

8) Wii Backwards compatibility. In a world where Microsoft and Sony have been spotty about including backwards compatibility the WiiU will come with full backwards compatibility from day 1. This is the only one that I care about. I don't plan on buying a Wii U at launch or anything, but I have respect for Nintendo's decision to keep BC in there. I worry that the next consoles from Microsoft and Sony will not include BC whatsoever.

I think most people on GAF already know about the things listed in the OP. It's nothing new, and it's nothing to be excited over.

Vita launch lineup was boring, only worthwhile purchase being lumines, everything else was pretty mediocre to bad. So I hope the WiiU lineup isn't like that

The real 8 reasons you should be excited about the Wii U:
1. ZombiU
2. Pikmin 3
3. Project P-100
4. Lego City Undercover
5. Scribblenauts Unlimited
6. Rayman Legends
7. NSMBU
8. Nintendo Land (I seriously think this will be good but I also think Wii Sports Resort is one of the best games this gen so...)

Also I predict great things for this thread.

For a console to have 8 good reasons for me to buy one, all those 8 reasons would have to be games that I want to play.

MKV downloads and streaming. Lovefilm and Netflix type services are the future for all but the most anal audiovisual enthusiasts imo.

Has MKV support been announced? And no, Blu Ray owners are not some tiny niche of neurotic movie purchasers. Theres quite a lot of people with a library out there.

The difference will be closer to the difference between 3DS and Vita.

This reads like an IGN article when IGN knew what Nintendo was.

One reason you should be excited for the Wii
  • It's NINTENDO!!!!!!!11111

Isn't that... expected? However, it most likely won't be a generational leap over the PS3/360 as the PS4/X720 will be.

None of those games want to make me get a Wii U. I want RPGs that is not a port and stuff like Monster Hunter.

I wasn't talking now, I was talking in future. I have a blu-ray collection myself, but with Sky Movies On Demand over Broadband, Lovefilm and Netflix, I am buying less and less.

Since the first announcement, It's been hard to get optimistic about WiiU.

I wouldn't say Nintendo is launching ahead, if something they are launching 7 years behind Xbox360. Of course majority of consumers probably doesn't realize this until we get the see glimpse of real next gen (hopefully before launch of WiiU), and by the time they have already filled their console purchase desires for the coming years.

Also the digital distributon on 3DS doesn't paint a picture that Nintendo would be getting a hang of that anytime soon (afaik probably).

3, 5 and 6 I can agree with. Well I do not even agree with them so much as I can see there is an argument to be had. The other 5 points are just filling out the 8 reasons you should be excited.

For me, Wii U seems to be shaping up to maybe the least exciting new generation launch I can remember. Easily. It doesn't even feel like one.

I think their main problem at the moment is the confusion about all the possible controller combinations. They also have to make sure people recognize this as a new console and not a new controller.

Well the argument is WiiU the multimedia system of choice? The answer is no. The other systems have Netflix and Hulu and so on too. It just depends on the weight you want to add to the "screen companion" aspect.
