Activision: Mobile gaming to reach 360 graphics next gen

Activision's vice president of mobile development, Greg Canessa, has said that Smartphones are on the verge of catching up to current-gen consoles in raw graphical grunt.

"The CPU and GPU capabilities of mobile devices will reach Xbox 360 levels of graphical fidelity and processing power within the next generation," Canessa told CVG in an interview published earlier today.

"Activision will be creating a mix of casual and immersive gaming experiences on mobile, but as I say smartphones are more and more allowing for us to create those kinds of experiences. The games that Activision publishes on console, the games it publishes on PC, pretty soon we'll be publishing those kinds of experiences on tablets and smartphones," he added.

Activision has big plans to take full advantage of this and, as Canessa revealed in the same interview, is looking at its entire thirty-year portfolio of more than 350 brands and licences to consider which to bring to smartphones.

"Mobile is an emerging business for the company and it's something we're taking very seriously," he said. "We are taking a thoughtful approach to it. Console and PC are still the major focus, but we feel that mobile is an important segment for our brands going forward."

Having a small snap at Zynga, Canessa went on, "I know there's another company that paid crazy money for mobile companies and spent a lot of time trying to mesh them together. That's not our approach. We are taking an organic approach, building things from the ground-up."

I'm surprised it hasn't already. That UE3 tech demo on iPhone a couple of years back looked pretty much on par to me, of course it was completely empty, but I'd have thought since then it's got there.

Not really surprising.

I would never play these kinds of games on mobile though. Although no buttons is a big thing, the battery life cost to play those games are just too much. Sure, I can plug it in but that defeats the purpose of it being mobile.

Activision will be creating a mix of casual and immersive gaming experiences on mobile,

I don't think I'll ever be immersed in a mobile hand held game from my phone...

It will be interesting to see where this goes. I haven't owned a handheld (or a smartphone) since 2006 - GameBoy SP Ftw =)

The 'H' stands for hentai.
My little iPad 2 can pump out some nice graphics.

I look forward to upgrading to iPad 6 down the line when the iPad 2 becomes unsuable with PS3/360+ graphics and power :)

I play a lot on my iPhone but I really want to know...

for what games exactly? The (imo) best experiences on iOS barely need anything more than what we already have today.

Coincidently I've been playing Infinity Blade II for a few hours today, and it is utterly terrible. To say it is devoid of substance is an understatement.

aren't they just talking about their own published games? *cough*declassified*cough*

because there are some games on the Vita that look close to 360 and PS3 games.

PS Vita is already mostly there. Upcoming NFS:MW for example.

And with real controls. People just need to ignore the doom and gloom, and have fun.

I'd rather mobile gaming reach high fidelity controls since 360 graphics don't mean much if your controls are restricted to the touch screen.

Not only is it not, it's true. Nintendo will reach 360 graphics next generation, they will almost certainly surpass it too, but reaching always comes first.

That is true, I mean the Wii U is Nintendo's first HD console, I read his comment like he was comparing it to the iOS, just read it over again and now I understand what he means.

This it's only ban worthy when referring to a Nintendo product needs to stop.

>.> Nintendo deserve just as much sarcasm and ridicule as everyone else.

It's 2005/6 technology, that's really not surprising.

came to say this.

dont get me wrong it's nice that theyll be able to do that. but graphics arent mobile/social's biggest concern....

normies dont care about gfx. and they fact is most dev studios develop for the skus that are the 2 gens below. that way they dont miss out on all market.

sure we'll get whatever that game is. finger swipe infinity sword malarky sequel. but its not like angry birds and peggle will be going all halo 4 on us.
