I'm not even thinking about the money. Stunts like this make the front office look like amateurs and/or hasty decision makers or worse (have less pull than the Head Coach?). Unless there's big money up front that can't be had elsewhere, why should any guy sign there and possibly face this kind of embarrassment?

Stunts like what? This is the way you SHOULD do it. You bring in guys to compete for the job and the best man gets it.

I agree with you on this. But letting the deciding metric be slicing up the KC defense is pretty shaky. That defense made the Rams look like juggernauts.

I think Flynn got a bad deal in this competition. He played well with the 1s. TO had a horrible drop on a marvelous pass he threw. Wilson lights it up with the 2s, then kills KC's awful D. But it seems Wilson blew away the coaches and his teammates, and they really couldn't go with Flynn if they feel that strongly about Wilson

remember qb competitions aren't only what you see on the field in pre-season but all the work in mini camps and training camps and whatever.

i will say this feels an awful lot like the 49ers alex/shaun hill/JTO competition where the coaches were looking for any excuse to give JTO the job and fabricated a "sore shoulder" to diminish shaun hills reps and playing time in the pre-season.

i'm not saying wilson will be like JTO but it just feels like a weird situation. but that's why cheatin' pete gets paid the big bucks!

Your post history is hilarious.

I think Pete made the right decision. Wilson seems just as accurate as Flyn but with better mobility and a better arm. Sucks for division rivals b/c it's probable Wilson is the best QB in that division.

not saying much considering the trash we have in the nfc west but right now i would say russell wilson is the best QB in the entire NFL, let alone the nfc west, and he is only going to get better than that. so what is above #1? i don't know but saint wilson will show us all in time

Did we really trade Vontae Davis for a 2nd and 6th? Really? REALLY?

This is fucking pathetic now. I went on a rant after the game Friday about how shitty Marshall is, and how Tae should be starting ahead of him. And fucking retarded-ass Ireland trades him for a bag of Cheetos. This is as bad as the Marshall trade.

WTF are we doing? Tae is one of our best cover guys. Marshall can't cover a gimp. This is rebuilding, this is Ross and Ireland systematically destroying the franchise I love. I've had enough. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, but fucking fire Ireland already. This madness has to stop at some point. I can't believe how shitty we are and how much shittier we're becoming just by idiotic managerial decisions. I hope the radio shows rip him a new asshole this week. This clown deserves to be run out of town. I want to punch him in his stupid fucking face right now. So fucking mad. ARRRRRRRRRGH! PEACE.

That's a pretty good return on your investment all things considered. And it will be a high second!

What are you talking about? It's Jeff Ireland that will be drafting. You can't polish a turd. I think someone on RGM that we parlayed one of the picks from the Marshall trade into Egnew...who might not even make the roster. The man responsible for these horrible trades is also responsible for drafting with these picks. FML. Vontae Davis is WAY better than a 2nd and 6th. Ireland's excuse isn't even performance, but character issues. WTF is that bullshit? I'm sharpening my pitchfork and lighting my torch, and I'm ready to go hold a going away party for that douchebag Ireland down at the stadium. FUUUUUUUUUUU

The question today isn't whether the Dolphins got fair value in trading cornerback Vontae Davis to Indianapolis or if this season is sinking before opening kickoff. The question is this:

Does Joe Philbin know what he's doing?

Because this latest, boldest move of trading Davis two weeks before the season opener started with Philbin, not Jeff Ireland. It was the new coach demanding to dump the second-best player on last year's defense, not the old general manager who drafted Davis in the first place.

Don't be fooled by Philbin's self-deprecating approach and good-uncle demeanor. Look at his hard-boiled actions in these opening months. He's making Nick Saban and Bill Parcells look like pansies.

Philbin wanted the team's best playmaker (and biggest headache) in Brandon Marshall to be traded. He allowed HBO's "Hard Knocks" in the room. He cut receiver Chad Johnson for the very kind of behavior that made signing him a head-scratcher.

He called out linebacker Karlos Dansby for talking back. He named a rookie with 19 college starts his quarterback. Now he's traded a prime-time player with Pro Bowl potential for his childish ways. Whew.

People keep looking at Philbin and asking if he's tough enough. That's the wrong question. Read that to-do list again. Philbin is plenty tough enough to make decisions most coaches wouldn't.

But is he shrewd enough? Able enough?

That's the issue a franchise rides on now. Just as with Marshall, it's easy to see why Philbin didn't like Davis. Rewind the "Hard Knocks" espisode where the cornerback is called out by coaches, if you want.

Davis is a man-child. He's out of shape. He needs a potty break. And those are minor issues compared to showing up for practice drunk, as Davis was suspended for last year.

Amputation is the easiest way to change a losing team's culture. So Philbin demanded Davis be shipped out, just like he did with Marshall. And just like with Marshall, you can understand why. But where it all breaks down for this season is with their replacements.

There are no receivers behind Marshall. That's was obvious in April and is an embarrassment in August.

As for Davis, few weeks ago, long-time NFL General Manager Bill Polian was at Dolphins camp and singled out Davis' talent. "Watching him in practice, he jumps at you with his feet and hip movment — he should be a guy who's special,'' Polian said on Sirius radio.

Are there cornerbacks of Davis' talent on this team? Ireland says there are some ready. We'll see.

The Dolphins aren't just weaker without Davis and Marshall this year. Philbin officially and completely has lost some veterans who see talent walking out the door.

Should that matter to a first-year coach inheriting a mediocre roster with questionable attitude?

Take Dansby. What's going on here? He hasn't practiced since Philbin criticized him publicly for questioning the Johnson release. Knee injury is the reason. Only Dansby knows if the timing is a coincidence.

What we do know is Dansby reported to camp last year 25 pounds overweight. That suggests something. Seeing Philbin's body of work these last few months, do you think he has a man-crush on Dansby?

The main consideration this year is the education of quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Anyone who can help that stays. Anyone who can't or has a detrimental attitude, goes. And fast, we're finding out.

Philbin will pay if this doesn't work out. But Ireland may pay more immediately. He spent richly for Marshall and Davis. They were personnel decisions that at least produced. And now they're kicked out of town by the new coach because of losing attitudes.

If Davis reaches his potential in Indianapolis, second- and sixth-round picks won't match his value. No way. Just as if Marshall is a beast again in Chicago, two third-rounds don't come close.

This isn't about value for Philbin, though. This is about a first-year coach doing what he believes. Give him courage-of-his-conviction points. But he'll be judged on wins and losses. Talent decides that. And talent keeps going out the door.

Does Philbin know what he's doing?

Basically Philbin thinks your team has a losing culture and is trying to fix it by getting rid of the guys he thinks are bums. Not like you guys were going to be that good this year, so might as well do it all now and build with the players who buy in.

Not sure I agree with the way he's doing it but in general I like the philosophy. Who cares what Carlos Dansby thinks? If he's going to show up fat to camp then his place on a leadership council is probably affirmation that change was still needed

We were going to be bad, but could have been better than last season. If we kept Marshall, adding Braylon or Chad would have given us a very solid receiving corp to aide a rookie QB who currently has no one worst spit to throw to. Bess is now the best WR, and he's a slot buy. Hartline hasn't even been able to practice yet AFAIK. Fasano is dropping passes FFS.

On defense, our already questionable line can't get any pressure on the other team's QB, so now that problem is compounded by the loss of our best cover guy. Smith is a good tackler, and has improved a lot in coverage, but can't catch a beach ball with hands covered in crazy glue. Marshall hasn't shown the ability to cover anyone worth a damn, even when given help by the safety.

It's one thing to make these stupid personnel moves when you have some depth at those positions, but those are two thin positions that Philbin and Ireland decided to skim...from the fucking top. This isn't a question of us being bad, it's how bad. And there's no confidence Ireland will do anything but waste the picks he's stockpiling, or the potential #1 pick we're certain to be tanking for. Who are we gonna draft, Barkley? We already spent a top pick on a QB.

I'm baffled and pissed. I want heads to roll in that Dolphins FO. I've said for years how we have one of the worst FOs in all of sports, but that was before Ireland. I don't know how, but it feels like we've actually gotten worse in that area...WORSE. If I saw Jeff Ireland on the street, I'd kick him in the nuts. A rookie coach shouldn't have the pull to make personnel decisions like this, especially when they look positively retarded like these.

Hard Knocks showed us that the vets want to take on responsibility for whipping the crew into shape. Tae and even Chad aren't big enough problems that they should have been shipped off. Not even Marshall should have been traded. You give guys like that at least one more season to prove themselves, because they were badly needed for the team to function on the field. Season tickets in the tank, and they want to try a radical rebuild helmed by a man all the fans wanted fired last season? We're looking set to be one of the worst teams ever fielded for competition in the NFL. I don't know how on earth this helps Philbin or Tannehill look good, how it makes Ireland not look incompetent, or how it helps fill the waning Phins fanbase with any amount of confidence or passion.

When Ross flies his helicopter over the stadium before each game, I'll be sure to flip it the bird and mutter some swears as a show of my disdain for all that piece of shit has taken away from South Florida athletics. I wish I'd passed on Phins tix and saved that money for Heat season tix. I'm only a few blocks from the AAA, but go out of my way to see the Dolphins, because football is my passion. This team's shitty management is trying it's best to suck what passion is left right out of me. Fuck them. PEACE.

Maybe they'll get rid of Ireland!

Not on this planet.

Just got back to my apartment from the game. Had a fun time. Newton seemed a bit off on his throws and the O-Line looked like ass, but hey, our first team got the lead and that's all that matters. I was also pleased that the D seemed to play well after Sanchez's first two completions and really stiffened up in the redzone. I was in the NE corner endzone, lower level and got to see Davis up close sacking Sanchez. Awesome to see him make a big play on his first game snap since the Packers game last season. Really hope he'll be able to stay healthy and contribute as a 3rd down/situational blitzer this season.

On a side note, MetLife stadium is fucking nice. Awesome place to watch a game.

If we believe that article, then Philbin has some level of personnel authority. Or at least a lot of say. If you hate Ireland, at a minimum his power has been diminished. It sucks to suck, but the only way to get people into that stadium and to consistently win is to develop an elite QB. That's why I think the Marshall trade is far more questionable than this trade, but Marshall has infuriated every single coach he's played for. Might not be worth the trouble, but we'll see how it goes in Chicago

Not sure why you are so hung up on Chad Johnson. He's not good. He can't get open anymore. You already have guys who can't get open. Might as well have guys that don't get open that at least run the right routes, don't beat up their girlfriends, and aren't lunatic distracting head-cases

Jets are the only team without a TD this preseason so far. Has that ever happened before?

I remember Al Michaels said something like that the Rams (I think it was them I wasn't really paying attention to this game) did it and they managed to lead the league in points scored that season. It's definitely happened before.

On the bright side our defense has looked great. DLine was really solid tonight.

Think he said it was KC in '03.

Dolphins front office sucks and so do most of their players. We were lucky to get the wins we did last year. This is not a rebuilding year. Because when you're rebuilding you do it by signing free agents and working to get draft picks. No free agent wanted to play in Miami this year. We suck. Plain and simple. Next year will be the rebuild year. We are in blow it up mode right now.
