LTTP: Shadowrun (SNES)

$T2eC16hHJHEE9ny2tlu(BQJuzy88F!~~60_57.JPG

I got this bad boy in the mail today, slapped it on my SNES and got my ass handed to me within five minutes. It'll be one of those games, won't it?

A little background info: this game caught my eye because it's one of the few games that everyone recommends on the SNES that I still haven't played. I know very, very little about this game, other than the fact that it came from a tabletop RPG, this is the first game adaptation on it, and that it's damn good. I thought I had exhausted pretty much everything good on the system, and I thought it would be neat to go into a new, good SNES game as blind as possible, since I figure there's few other games on the system that'll do that for me now.

First thing I noticed is that controls very much like a PC game, but to my surprise this game is actually native to the SNES and not the PC. To my bigger surprise, the other versions like the Genesis one are completely different games. It made me feel better about jumping on the SNES version. For some strange reason I thought for a second I was getting some sub-par port of a game I could've gotten on the PC.

Now on to the game itself. I've only managed to get just a little bit into the game because it's so cryptic and difficult. I'm loving the fact that conversations are based on keywords, which then become conversation options for people, and asking certain people about the right topics leads to many things including the story advancing, more topics, and so on. I think it's pretty ambitious considering the context that it's a 1993 game. Hell, it's already a deeper system than the Mass Effect series <_<

Other stuff is a bit weird, particularly the controls. So the R button can bring up the cursor, which can then manipulate objects, but you can't talk to people that way. You have to press B, bring up the menu, and then talk to them. Combat is equally awkward, you have to bring out the weapon with A, aim manually at the enemy and fire away with the A button. It's doable, but I think it could've been better implemented. Regardless, it's not something that'll turn me off the game.

Difficulty = yikes. I died a couple of times just wandering around with no way to defend myself. Wasn't making progress until I figured I needed to follow the dude who ran into me as I escaped the morgue (pretty obvious in retrospect). He turns a corner, gets shot by a bigass dude (turned out to be an Orc, one of the many fantasy sci-fi elements Shadowrun is supposed to be famous for), and I have to run past him, fumble with the cursor controls as he's shooting me so I can pick up the gun of the dude I was following, equip it and bust caps on the Orc's ugly green ass until he makes a blue explosion indicated he's deed.

Then I get treated to probably the weirdest fucking hint I've seen in gaming in quite some time. A dog with glowing red eyes creeps out of the shadows and gives me a cryptic hint about how someone or something named "Dog" controls my destiny and I need to acquire three things for him/her/it and seek his/her/its "shrine". Anything I ask to the dog results in growling. I think this game is turning a little freaky here.

From there I don't know what to do. I haven't been able to save but I'm taking a break writing this up and I'm kind of debating using an internet guide to just get a hint. Then again this is one of the few SNES games that I'm going in blind so why ruin that element with a guide? Then again, I can't go anywhere without a small army shooting at me from rooftops, windows, or just thugs on the street and I've already played the intro like three times already with my deaths. What say you, GAF? Is it a game so cryptic I should really use a guide when I'm stuck or is it doable without one?

One of my favorite SNES games, and far superior to the genesis version imo.

I don't think I ever got around to beating it though. I think I stopped playing around the arena area/junkyard.

Hopefully this franchise makes a proper comeback in the not too distant future. I wouldn't mind something along the lines of Vampire The Masquerade (without being a broken mess of course).

I would say take a peak at a guide whenever you get stuck. Not knowing where to go is pretty easy in Shadowrun, and I'm sure you would rather not get bored and quit just because you aren't sure on where to go.

The game is definitely tough in the beginning, but stick with it. Once you level up a bit it will stop kicking your ass at every turn. You could try leveling a lil on the zombies in the cemetery nearby the intro too if you want.

This game is on top of my SNES games that I haven't played but should buy and play someday-list.

I watched some Let's Play while ago and it screams Excellent

Me and my brother rented this game more than 20 times back in the 90s. He managed to finish it. Without internet, without tip from gaming mags, nothing. And having to restart it almost every time we rented.

Its a great game. In fact, one of the best games i ever played.

A couple of years ago i downloaded "the soundtrack". Some blog converted the music into mp3 files. Its magical.

You wont get games like this nowdays. I envy since you have the chance to experience it for the first time.

So good. In order to save you'll need to find an empty bed. Keep exploring the buildings you can enter and you'll eventually find one. Later on, you'll use bed to spend your karma points on skill upgrades. Love the music and the atmosphere of this game.

It was a much more "streamlined" game that emphasized story telling over free form RPG elements. I liked both this and the Genesis version for different reasons.

Jake Armitage is the man.

I loved that game and have easily played it through 7-8 times. Great game, solid representation of the Shadowrun universe.

It's hard at points, but you can figure it out pretty quickly and avoid too many restarts.

I think I'll try going for a bit longer without the guide. I think I'll feel a bit more leeway once I find my first bed to sleep/save in. I also need to find out if the battery on the cart that I got still works <_<

You're in for a blast OP, I never could finish this game when I got it a few years ago, my stupid brother deleted save file. :(

Awesome game. I remember buying it based off the Gamepro review and never regretted it. 2 of my friends also bought it at the same time and the 3 of us worked through it together. Man just talking about it makes me want to run through it again right now.

I enjoyed the game back in 2001.

It was a find, since I have no knowledge of it. It's a pity how bad the game progresses and how dissapointing ending is. As much as I expected from Kitsune, she just follow you like any other hired shadowrunner. And it was so hard to keep her alive at later levels without the chance to improve her armor.

So good.

Was the SNES actually that superior to the Genesis version? Cuz it was the sauce. I don't really know why this formula has never been returned to for Shadowrun.. ya know, like an RPG, not a multiplayer shooter. I realize there was the recent kickstarter, but still it's been literally decades with the franchise going unloved.

Such a cool game, so much atmosphere created with so few pixels. Unfortunately it was sort of one-of-a-kind on that console, a shame because it really worked so well.

Really a completely underrated, wonderful, catchy soundtrack.

I think the main theme that starts in the morgue is one of the best tracks from the 16-bit era.
They got the same guy to do music for the new Shadowrun game that got Kickstartered recently.

Yep. Graphics and controls could have been more polished, but the music and most of the sound effects were quite awesome, haunting, atmospheric, etc.

Heh, remember my dad found an American Shadowrun cartridge back in the days in a flea market. We didn't know how to fit it into our European SNES. Tried disassembling it and everything then gave up and threw it in the bin. The cover looked cool too. Skip forward around a decade and I finally got around to playing it on an emulator. One of my favourite SNES games (I have a lot of favourite SNES games). Regret chucking it away, my memories of it are all I have now.

I love this game, I play through it every couple of years. I can't wait for the new Shadowrun games.

OK, so little update. I looked around some more and found a dude that the game hilariously calls "Seems Familiar". Hello Seems, you seem to be in a bit of a pickle. I'll just go ahead and pick your pockets for a key, steal a memo and leave you moaning on the ground. The "Morgue guys" should come around and pick you up soon enough.

In comes around 45 minutes of frantically running around in search for the fabled bed. I've no idea if this key is going to do a thing to help me there, or if the memo will, but I'm walking ever so slowly as to not run into any more thugs, as I'm down to a fourth of my health at this point and another death means doing this whole thing all over again. If I see a thug, I'm outta that area and in I go again to see if they disappeared. I'm pretty sure I look like a lunatic to all those "Busy Men" walking down the street, what with me turning a corner, shouting "FUCK!" running back the corner, immediately turning around and turning the corner again, and repeating the process until there are no gunshots right after I shuffle out of view. I feel like I'm exploiting the spawn system, but it's that or death.

I get into a building to escape two lunatics shooting at me and I find myself in a large corridor of doors. They're all locked except for one room with respawning enemies. Something's off about this building, since it seems useless. I examine the locked doors and notice these are labeled "Apartment" followed by a number. I examine them all and I see the number 6 and my brain goes off "SIX, DUDE, SIX. SIXSIXSIXSIX", yes the number on the key. It's a long shot but I'll try it. What do you know? That's exactly the door the key opens! I enter the room and...

Could it....is it...?! IT IS! A bed! I run to the shit and sleep on it like you wouldn't believe. I save as soon as I can and get out of bed. At this point I wonder if I should switch off the game for a while to see if the cart's battery still works because I haven't verified it, but fuck it I want to keep playing for a little while longer. I look around and notice a cabinet with some small number of nuyen inside it (wtf is "nuyen" supposed to be anyway?), I examine some thing on a wall that's supposed to be a phone or something because I keep hearing about some dude threatening me. Then I just switch it off and run out.

Well, it didn't take long before I started farming. I mean, the game DOES put you in a really comfy situation there, what with the bed being right next to a room with respawning enemies. I'm really annoyed at all the shots I keep missing when shooting at them so I figure I should use the karma points that I get sometimes after killing enemies on my Firearms skill thingy. I THINK it does something to improve accuracy or power, or it may just be me improving a useless skill and me whooping at a placebo effect.

I think shit is starting to be clearer now. I'm not running away from battles anymore now that I can save. I switched off the game because I don't want to get too far only for me to find out the battery's not working. The SNES has been off for about 20 minutes and I just turned it back on to check and indeed the save is still there, so I'm assuming I'm all in the clear in regards to the battery, or should I wait for longer to see if my save dissolves into the ether?

EDIT: There's also a setting in the Options menu that changes the music. One is "FULL" and the other is "EVENT". I'm not sure which one of the two is the intended option with which I should be playing the game?

Probably my favourite SNES game. I had a Genesis when I was younger so I didn't get around to playing this until two years ago and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I'll never forget the first time I equipped the sunglasses.

Oh yeah, I loved that. I saw the glasses and I tried equipping them. James just says "I'll put these on", and in my head I read it in the most badass way possible. To my delight i found that these honeys show up on your face when you're talking to people. STYLE!

Genesis Shadowrun is better. But I think both games deserve more credit. Really interesting games, especially for their time.

What is better about it in your opinion?

As for the SNES game I made it to the junkyard arena area and stopped playing shortly after.

Everything except perhaps the graphics.

Hahaha...

no.

It was pretty good, but it doesn't reach the awesomeness level of the SNES game, if only because that one had (much) better music.

All you got is music? Really? Weak.

Definitely a personal classic for me. I prefer it slightly over the Gensis one.

I'm pretty excited for Shadowrun Returns. Hope it turns out well.

What a wonderful game with an incredible soundtrack. Played through it easily half a dozen times over the years.

Too bad it's mostly forgotten these days. It rarely gets mentioned in Top 20 or even Top 50 lists. Bah. I love it - my brother traded Rock&Roll Racing for it back then and we never looked back. Unfortunately my SNES doesn't work anymore (same for the battery in Shadowrun).

Just listen to some of the music:

Yes! The soundtrack was so good. They've actually hired this guy to help create the Shadowrun Returns soundtrack.

I think we can all agree that Shadowrun Returns needs to kick some major ass. I'm excited for it though. It was crazy to see how easily it reached its kickstarter goals. Lots of fans out there I guess. Never played a P&P RPG, but if I did, I would probably choose Shadowrun.

Agreed. I'm a little anxious about it, but it's all sounding good and I love the concept art they've put out, so here's hoping it turns out well.

Lost in all the other awesomeness about this game is that it was one of the first (I think) to have a variable-width font. I remember noticing this and being somewhat mindblown; I don't think I'd ever seen a proportional font in a game before.

I really want to replay this, I wish it would get re-released. I got stuck in the game really early on and could never figure out how where I was supposed to go. Ended up selling it. Too bad gamefaqs didn't exist back then.

I own and enjoy both but prefer the SNES version. The Genesis version felt a little more repetitive, but it was still a fun game that really nailed the atmosphere. OP should definitely check it out later with different expectations, because it plays pretty differently.

I actually *just* started to replay this game a couple of weeks ago and was surprised how much I'd forgotten! Couldn't remember how to get into the apartment and a number of other things, so I actually died my first time through just like the OP lol. I wasn't expecting that since I thought I remembered the early portion of the game super well still (apparently not) while remaining fuzzy on the late game portions. Still in my SNES which is right next to this computer... I really need to turn it back on and power through it. Such a great, great game, and I am extremely pumped for the new sequel.

It's pretty cheap if you're in the mood. I'm pretty sure I've seen it listed at my local game shop for 15 or 20 bucks, but Amazon has it at 35 so who knows. Either way, the new Shadowrun is coming out now and it seems to be modeled after the SNES version (though I haven't followed it too much).

Tiny update that probably nobody gives a fuck about: battery in the cart is functional! That means I get to go play as much as I fucking want now! Like a year ago I had to return a copy of Link to the Past to the seller because the battery was dead even though he said it was fine and it delayed getting my game on for like 2 more weeks (I didn't want to do it myself on something I can ruin. I'm paranoid like that).

If I recall, firearms improves your accuracy, not your power. Power I believe is determined by your gun. Wait till you get the automatics... Oh boy fun times :)

Absolute classic Snes game for me, was obsessd with this almost as much as Link to the Past back in tha day

And I hate RPGs too

Those of you who dig SNES Shadowrun should check out Nightshade for NES--it's an action-adventure game by the same devs that is somewhat of a spiritual prequel to their Shadowrun game.

Nah guys, the Sega Mega CD is the best one.

I haven't actually played the Mega CD game but from all accounts it's pretty crappy.

Played and beat Shadowrun SNES for the first time a couple months ago.

I don't play too many western RPGs, but the couple i played this year, Shadowrun totally demolishes Fallout: New Vegas.

Love the gritty graphics (the miniature characters and isometric perspective), the kickin' soundtrack, the real-time combat system, and the cyberpunk themed universe.
