Guys, what is the chance that Pikmin 3 looks much more polished compared to the E3 built?

Doesn't ZombiU look quite a bit better now compared to the E3 demo (I am not going to buy it because I don't like FPS games)?

Well, we do know that Pikmin 3 has been in development for 2 years now. I don't think we will see that much of an improvement. ZombiU does look better though since E3.

Anybody else interested by Miiverse? Think Nintendo can pull off the whole "Facebook of gaming" thing? Cause if they can...that'd be huge.

As long as I don't have to link it to facebook or twitter or anything it's going to be great.

The screenshot feature alone is something I've wanted on consoles/handhelds for a while, they really need to add that to the 3DS as well.

They'll probably balls it up though by making the screenshots horribly compressed or save them in some format that isn't usable on my PC.

Miiverse will be interesting, but knowing Nintendo, their "spin" on the idea is not going to be flawless. Still, it sounds cool especially for players who are used to playing by themselves.

then you're all set because that's not what they're gonna do. they explicitly said that they have not plans for facebook/twitter integrations. they want this to be the game-focused version of those things.

By two years you mean four, I take it.

That was in 2008.

since when has anything ever been flawless when it comes to gaming consoles?

Has a screenshot feature been confirmed? It's one of my most wanted features.

In one of the Nintendo Direct videos, Iwata said something along the lines of being able to post in-game screen shots and send them to others via Miiverse. Don't quote me on that.

Yeah, I like the idea of the Miiverse, as long as it's separate from other social networks.

Facebook: "Hey everyone, check out this Xbox achievement I just earned! Anybody care...anybody? Hello? Why did I even post this..."

Miiverse: "Hey fellow people who are actually interested in this kind of thing"

Yup that's exactly the whole point. It's got nothing to do with the other crap.

Being in a community where I can discuss gaming interests and talk of achievements and difficult parts of games with other like-minded gamers is something I've always wanted in my life. Now, if only such a thing existed...

Yep they did and so did Toys R Us

Anyone know if ToysRUS actually took preorders? Hoping they will for the Wii U. If I go to a midnight launch I'd like to know I'm getting a system but not waiting on line with the hopes of getting one. No is that going to happen.

Can't developers implement that feature? I've never done it but you can transfer the photos you make in Love Plus to the 3DS' photo app and go from there (though apparently the colors get fucked up? read that on a forum).
Of course it would be easier if Nintendo just hardcoded a Screenshot feature (into "home" menu?), sounds absolutely doable.

Who do we get to develop the GAF app then, feep? It will automagically submit your latest achievement as a post to every topic on the front page of GAF, have the whole community know you died at the first goomba!

The thing about Miiverse for me is that when I'm playing my Wii-U, I want to be playing a game. My game time is getting so limited now. I can spend my breaks and lunch hour visiting forums and gaming sites but when I'm done with work and at home and the kid is put to bed and the daily house chores are done, I want to turn that Wii-U on and play a game. I don't want to go and do more "social media" stuff or whatever.

So I guess it's still up in the air how much I'll use this Mii-verse thing. I think it's a good idea and I think it'll cater to the younger crowd really well. But when I only have an hour or two of free time to play a video game, I want to spend that hour or two actually playing a game.

I really wonder, what the Wii U will output as audio.

Will you be able to say "Dolby Digital 5.1"/"DTS" only and no TrueHD etc. crap? In the "worst" case it could be PCM surround only.

I also wonder if a HDMI Switcher will work. I own a really great (but "old") surround receiver, sadly no HDMI in. It has only optical (toslink) and coaxial digital in. Which means I will have to get the signal somehow off the HDMI out of the Wii U. It's really sad that they didn't add toslink or coaxial out. And it's also a shame, that most LED/LCD TVs don't offer Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS out and instead output plain stereo on toslink. That's why I can't even pass the signal through my LED-TV.

You can do that on Pilotwings/Nintendogs too. The thing is, when you suspend and use Game Notes, you get an image of the two screens. You can't save it or anything, but I don't understand why they can't use that somehow.

Well yeah I meant hardcoded into the OS. They already have a perfect place to do it, as well.

If you press home mid game and select the notes tab, you can bring up the game screen onto it. There should be an option to export the game screen to the SD when you click on the right most button.

You can use the parental settings so that you don't have to interact with anyone.

I asked him to elaborate on what he meant, as Nintendo Global President Satoru Iwata had previously noted in response to people talking about taking the Wii U controller with them to the washroom or bedroom to play might have a difficult time getting that kind of range out of it. So what then does he mean by “taking the Wii U experience with you?”

“Okay, so that I can elaborate on. The Wii U is not a portable handheld device you’re going to take with you in transit or into a proximity away from the Wii U console, but you can take content from your console, put it on your Wii U controller, take it with you somewhere else, and be able to upload it. That technology is possible.”

I likened it to the Wii Remote, which has a small amount of memory for storing Miis and the like, and he noted it is “similar, but that’s kind of basic, what you can do with the Wii Remote. Taking a Mii with you is cool and fun, but this has the possibility to do more… not on the go, but once you get somewhere else where you take your stuff to someone else’s environment, it’s definitely possible.”

As an example, I put forth the possibility of loading up your team and plays in Madden and taking it to a friend’s house (who also has a Wii U, of course), and both being able to play from their own controller.

“It’s hard for us to commit to anything concrete, but yes, it’s a possibility because the controllers are compatible. It’s possible to have that kind of experience.”
This is one possibilty I missed. Do we know how much storage will be available on the GamePad? Maybe enough to store an ebook?

That has nothing to do with what I said. I have no issue with what it offers or does. I just don't see myself spending the time participating in it. I'd rather be playing the games than talking about them when I'm at home with free-time to play the Wii-U.

This is exactly what I'm looking for. If you can form communities within the Miiverse, that would be cool too. Something like a group/hub for people playing Zombie U, where they can discuss the ins and outs of that game. Kinda like the OT threads here on Gaf, but obviously it's only going to be Nintendo focused.

Something similar to the mario kart communities would be great, especially if they can be allocated their own "block" on that miiverse screen.

Miiverse won't be tied to the Wii U forever though. It'll be available on PCs and mobile devices eventually so you can check it when you have a few minutes of freetime.

Haha yeah, the fact that they already have everything in place for it, they basically only need to add a button to do it is the most annoying part. But they were pretty much like "get the thing out right now, add the bells and whistles later", it's not surprising. Somebody needs to tell them though, they probably don't realize, or maybe we'll get it with the magic update when WiiU launches and we get accounts and stuff (and Miiverse on 3DS).
Here's hoping. Need to send all you guys my rinko upskirt shots ;P (unpossible that is)

Ya, that might be nice. Woe is me though that my company would probably end up blocking it from our network. I think it's safe to say I'll still be spending my time here at GAF over my lunch breaks at work.

How can this not be huge? I'm pretty sure this miiverse feature will be added to MS and Sony future consoles.

How can this not be huge? I'm pretty sure this miiverse feature will be added to MS and Sony future consoles.

It can be not huge if:

A) The phone apps are incredibly late and offer limited functionality
B) Most users of the system don't go on the Internet via the console
C) People are comfortable enough using their computers and tablets to browse regular gaming and social sites
D) The interface is ungainly
E) It's slow to load ← seriously, that's what killed my usage of the socially-oriented Wii channels
F) The filtering software is changed from the current plan such that there is a delay in posting
G) Some games crash when going into this mode, causing the entire online system to get a bad reputation
H) The Wii U sells surprisingly low numbers
I) Gamers on the whole can't get past that the art style isn't all dangerous looking

There are probably many other things which could cause it to not be a huge smash with gamers.

I am... but I don't like that the publicly posted messages will be delayed by up to 30 minutes.

->

I think its only from reported people.

this is how you see that the bad news and/or the first new always get more attention. the 30min delay thing got heard by everyone but hardly anyone noticed that they then cleared this up and said that it refers to flagged messages.

ALL YOUR MESSAGES WILL GO THROUGH IMMEDIATELY!

There will be options to flag questionable messages which will THEN be reviewed by Nintendo staff.

I think I read here on GAF that messages are only delayed for that period if they are flagged by people in the community.

Show me some dangerous looking art.

Anybody else interested by Miiverse? Think Nintendo can pull off the whole "Facebook of gaming" thing? Cause if they can...that'd be huge.

I think they're onto something here. Current social networks are not ideal when it comes to sharing and discussing gaming. Truth be told, most of the people on my facebook don't give a hoot about gaming, and so I end up coming to sites like gaf instead. Miiverse offers Wiiu owners a place where they can talk to and share with people who love games, while they game. Furthermore, miiverse seems to be constructed in such a way that it is seamlessly integrated into every piece of software designed to take advantage of this social aspect, potentially changing how people play games.

Two things worry me. The first is nintendo's proposal to moderate messages. I approve of this in principle, but I hope Nintendo limits moderation to public posts, and allows free messaging between friends. My second concern is the implementation of miiverse into the 3DS. I cannot help but have my doubts when it comes to nintendo's ability to think ahead, and something tells me that they will somehow mess it up. I will try to remain positive.

wii has a usb keyboard no?

sell the game with a usb keyboard plugin, make the tablet the "mouse" for movement, scrolling, and selecting units(ie just display the same screen on gamepad that is on the screen up top... use the stylus for the pointer, use the "A" button for left click, the B button for right click....

tada done. quick dirty wiiu port of starcraft II that would be wildly successful.

Lol, just as I vowed to remain firmly on the ground behind that fence concerning future SC.
Not that SC on a tablet sounds even remotely like something my (lacking in) APM-hands want to indulge themselves in.

dat N64 Starcraft though <3<3

An hour ago I started drawing the Wii U gamepad onto a piece of paper, grabbed a 360 pad and tried to think of possible control options for Starcraft II. Initially I thought SCII would never be possible precisely because of the APM-heavy gameplay in multiplayer.

I thought up a rough concept for key binds on the touch screen and additional functions on only one side of the gamepad to free up one hand to use the touch screen at all times while the other is gripping the controller like with a normal game. this allows for a lefty mode switch of sides.

You basically use the whole touch screen for key binds and use the shoulder button and trigger to switch between selection inputs for the screen.

This would have to be tried out in practice though but in theory, I think, this should work really well. Of course not so good as to let players compete in cross-platform pro-level play but the main functionality would be there and could not be replicated on any other existing system.

What if Nintendo does Miiverse themes for people who think that the Miiverse doesn't look 'mature' enough.

Like if the overall hub-world would have like a Metroid theme for fans of the series, or an Assasins Creed 3 theme, etc...

Has anyone touched on the possibilities of using the game pad for art applications? I wonder if the wiiU will be able to connect to a printer...
Almost positive it won't.

Given the presence of art applications like Colors! 3D on 3DS, I would be surprised if a similar application didn't appear on the Wii U, with the ability to draw using the touchscreen. Then, you could save the art to the console's memory or an SD card and transfer it to your computer.

Yea either in this thread or at the end of the old one. Someone was really excited about the possibilities for a Colors! app on the GamePad.

That plus Nintendo thought of it, too back in 2011.

Maybe they got another Flipnote Studio coming? Or their Art Academy series might jump to Wii U?
