Nokia WP8 Event |OT| “Not every smartphone needs to look like an iPhone"

800 is worse, especially in even slightly low light.

You've not seen low light pictures on an SGSII? My wife's Lumia 900 takes slightly better pictures than my phone, which apparently is the same camera as an SGSIII. So, while disappointing, this new Nokia camera will take better pictures than any Samsung phone this year. The problem is we all expect much, much more. And its looking like they might not deliver on Wednesday, we will see.

Maybe we should see some pics from the 920's camera before condemning it? Motherfucking SD card slots though, how hard can that shit be, Nokia?

I'm equating it to the garbage sensor that's in the 800...

then how about you stop doing that? 8MP with a great sensor is more than enough for a god-damn phone.

the 3 best selling phones in the world don't have an SD card slot. There is no pro argument.

Or even the rumored slim 21MP version.
The 'slim' PureView didn't really make any sense. PureView has higher quality due to the sensor size, not the amount of megapixels, and the size used in the 808 wouldn't be possible in a slim package - it's physically impossible.

I've held both cameras in my hand and tried to take identical shots, 800 on automatic settings does not work outside of natural lighting, the noise levels are insane. If you play around with the settings you can get something workable but that's obviously not what you want from a phone camera. S2 isn't a great camera or anything but it does do a much better job as a point and shoot.

Maybe they'll fix it in software, but I'd have been much more confidence if the 920 had a larger sensor and could super sample night shots like the 808.

The *entire* point of "Pureview" was that it used all those megapixels and combined 7 pixels into 1 (in 8MP Pureview mode) to get a far better signal result than was usually possible, drastically reducing noise, to the point of mid to high-end DSLR's.
Thats on top of the unique zooming feature available by capturing all those photons.

8MP sensor renders that impossible, unless you are talking about some damn fine 1MP pictures.

Even putting that aside, the asinine "This is good enough for a phone!" shit needs to go. Its a garbage argument, and its especially annoying in threads about brand spanking new tech. The fact that Pureview is tech Nokia has in its bag very easily explains why some folks desired more. There's still a chance they may deliver on this so Ill wait to see. But miss me with that "This is all you need in a phone anyway" crap.

Don't bother, trust me.

I would have been fine with the "half" pureview @ 21mp but if this rumor is true my desire to get a nokia wp8 just dropped significantly. That was nokia's biggest selling feature imo.

Ehh, I don't know that its THAT deep though. I mean, slightly disappointing maybe. But a big enough issue to change your stance on whether or not the phone is worth purchasing? That seems sort of extreme. There's the whole brand new OS with 8 among other things that are also a part of the package.

Damnit i was really looking forward to a pureview. The 900 has one of the worst cameras I've ever had the displeasure of using. The iPhone and HTC phones have pretty good cameras.

920 Charge Pad!

I bought a 610 resently, if he wants to PM me I can tell him more about the device if he has any questions.

my dad bought a 610 even after me telling him to get a 710. Its fine. Its almost infinitely better than most feature phones, and at the price you can get one its a fine intro to a smartphone. Screen is nice, basic OS seems as responsive as my 800. Just a few apps don't work but most will be patched I guess.

couldn't the '8MP pureview' simply be the output of the sensor? For a consumer feature list you want to know what comes out of the phone, not necessarily how many mp it takes to deliver it?

edit: Wireless charging is impressive if the phone is still slim - I thought it added bulk?

I am specifically referring to this phone itself.... otherwise I see no reason to choose the nokia over any of the other hardware (it was their biggest selling point). I am on sprint and if there was a nokia w/pureview I would wait for it but if this rumor ends up being true I will get the first decent wp8 on sprint. That said I am still holding out hope the half pureview is there (and the new rumor was wrong).... reason being is the phone does look a bit thicker than the current 900. Don't see any reason the phone would be thicker unless they have a "real" pureview sensor.

damn i was really hoping that come wednesday nokia would play an extended advert for the 920 & it'd be revealed that the teaser was footage recorded at 12x zoom or something. boo nokia, boo.

Ahh I see what you mean. I'm still a little stuck in the past. I had forgotten for a second that there actually is other good hardware for WP8 worth buying. For a while there Nokia was sort of the only one making an effort.

I honestly think the third generation of Windows phones from Nokia will be where we will go wow. The first gen was a rush job and the second gen seems to be the transition stage. Hopefully people will still care by the time of the next generation.

Edit: The 820 looks better strictly due to the upper and lower bezel being balanced. WTF is with that huge gap between the capacitive buttons and the bottom edge on the 920.

That's what we all said about the 900 when they announced the 800, and what we all said about the Apollo devices when they announced the 900 :-/

Waiting for... what's after Apollo?

Wait for Rambo!

Yeah, the thickness of the phone doesn't make sense. I will wait for more concrete info before condemning the 920.

I think nokia just doesn't get it anymore. Shame because their phones were so good back during nokia's prime
That kind of beastly camera is a enthusiast type feature. People are more concerned with price and the design of the phone, i dont think the majority would pay extra for that and sacrifice the space it requires. I know i wouldn't.

I will take the unbalanced bezel if it means Lumia800-like shape :)

I've taken some great pictures with my old Focus and the 900. Even if the 920 doesn't have real Pureview they can still have improvements that make it a very nice camera.

man, you people are crazy over a camera. Sure I would want a pureview tech in my phone, but not if it's gonna mess with the eastetics of the phone.

This phone looks better than any phone out there right now. Im nokia will put a decent camera in it.

I kinda hope the phones will bomb and badly so the prices will plummet like with previous lumina phones. I want that 920!

Edit. exchangeable covers? 90s are back!

I agree. A serviceable camera would suit me fine.
