The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Yea I definitely didn't like this as much as Summer Wars. At certain points I wasn't even sure if I liked it in general. The main problem I had with it is the stupidity of the main lead or rather the frivolousness of her. She doesn't do jackshit with her abilities except extremely minor and petty things. Yes it's repeatedly pointed out in the movie how idiotic she is but just because you point something out doesn't get you off the hook.
The fact that she wasted(what she thought anyway) her last jump when Chiaki asked her about the time travel just to avoid the question, I was yelling at the screen how idiotic she was.
Also the major butterfly effect seemed really forced for dramatic purposes rather than something natural. Then we have the Aunt who seemingly is cool with everything despite what Makoto is saying should be insane. I later found out that this is the sequel to a live-adaptation but I was wondering what was going on with the Aunt during the entire duration of the movie. The repetition of the line "Time Waits for No One" really kinda heavy-handed with not only the visual representations but also the repeated audio ones as well. I finally had a couple of issues with the ending.
The first is that Makoto says to Chiaki at the end that she would wait for him despite her aunt essentially saying not to. Using her aunt's analogy, it's like running out to meet the guy and say a quick hello before running back in and waiting for him to come in. It's like a quick flip flop. I would have preferred her to be more progressive all the way to the finish line. She helps him and then regresses back into her Aunt. The second one is that they do a time-jump and the bit seems like an unnecessary epilogue that really doesn't add anything. I mean if they were going to do a timejump I was expecting something a bit meatier instead of a quick, check-up on everyone.

I did like some of the visual angles even if the animation didn't blow me away.

Hyouka 21: A Filthy Tease

Excellent story yet again but I feel a little down about this whole Chitanda thing.
Oreki needs to grow a pair and talk to her because she's clearly to fickled to hint one way or another. If he's looking for positive reads, this episode is the best he's gonna get. Also, I thought for sure Satoshi was going to reveal he was Gay.

I always think that that will happen everytime they get in a conversation away from others, this episode would have even been perfect for it.

Did you skip the second ED or something?
Well, I mean in the show proper. Besides, he is one of the villains in the ED anyway. lol

You know, I suppose this ending arc is a lot like the end of HanaIro in terms of where the characters are and having
a place that is going to be lost to them. I'm curious to see if they end up finishing off the series the same way.

The episode was fine for a build up episode, but that montage seemed unnecessarily hurried. Right after the announcement, time just passes and they're being plopped right at the end of the series. I suppose there's really nothing to say,
except show that everyone drifted apart, but still...
it felt like it should have taken place over an episode itself. But, 1 cour, so what can ya do.

There's no rubber banding that I can remember. It's just that the tracks are difficult the AI are relentless and the the slightest mistake will cost you severely.
It's just really hard.

Ah, yeah, that's why I really only played it on the normal difficulty usually. I still found the game so fun though. Another personal favorite of mine is Uniracers for the SNES.

You know, the only crazy thing I really remember the series for is that it suggests that women have
rape fantasies
. I suppose if you want to be edgy, that's the way to do it.

Yeah, I've heard some girls actually have those. It sounds weird to me but many people are into bondage and other types of fetishes along those lines so maybe it's not all that uncommon. That kind of reminds me of some weird phobias I've seen too, like that one girl who was scared of Jello. How does that even work? Was she doing some stuff in the bedroom that went horribly horribly wrong? Haha

I can't even stand her in the context of the show is the problem. lol

Haha, yeah some have also mentioned that too.

Space Bros 23

The funny thing about extraterrestrial biology dude is that he is absolutely shit at it. I mean he though there would be huge creatures if there was life on Jupiter because of the gravity, but it would clearly be the opposite.

Being interested in astronomy it's kind of strange that I'm not watching the show so I don't know the full context of this but I've actually read that, hypothetically, if there was extraterrestrial life on Jupiter it actually might be quite large and jellyfish or balloon like.

Gravity on Jupiter is about 2.5x that of Earth, I believe, so if something jellyfish-like only weighed about 25 pounds on Earth it would weigh about 62 or 63 pounds on Jupiter. The biggest thing would be pressure. I think scientists mentioned creatures on Jupiter would be quite large to take advantage of the wind currents and be made mostly out of some sort of gas to equalize the pressure I guess.

On Earth at the depths of the ocean where the pressure is greatest there exists some of the largest animals known such as whales and giant squids. I believe they hold quite a bit of water in their body to equalize the external pressure so I guess it would just be the aerial equivalent with gas on Jupiter. This is just what I've read a bit of anyway.

Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka of the Dead 0

I hope this gets another season, but I don't think it will :(

There's another OVA episode coming out in about a month I believe.

I just remembered... this was one of the shows this year that didn't even get the 12 episodes, right? And that secret announcement at the end turned out to be just a BD box set? lol

It aired with ten episodes but I believe there is an OVA episode coming next month and there was another OVA episode that came out just before the show or early into the airing so I guess with those it comes out to the average twelve episodes.

You know, there's been a suspicious lack of SM updates lately, and I know none of the people currently watching have reached the end yet.

I've missed the updates too! I'll have to start with some Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon impressions as I've been watching that lately.
Well, for those of us stalled after S, you have kind of anti-hyped SuperS as having slightly more entertainment value than a root canal!
I personally recommend you keep going so you can get to Stars, Minako shows up a bunch in that series! There's also many ReiXMinako pairing moments <3

It also has my favorite of the sub-villains, Aluminum Siren.
Oh right Sailor Moon. I'll get to that eventually.
Do it for Makoto!

How much of the show have you seen before? If you haven't seen any it will be interesting to see if she actually turns out to be your favorite of the girls.

I really should start watching Sailor Moon S again, but right now I need to finish the first volume of the manga. :)

Oh yeah, that's going to be my excuse, too.

Envelope: I was uh...I was at the flower shop!
Icarus: Oh! Oh yeah, I was at the flower shop too! Yep, gettin' drunk at the ol' flower shop.

To avoid talking about rape, I suppose it's a question of whether or not the fact that Twilight (or Fifty Shades) is written by a women makes it okay or not.
Or, if you have to talk about it, whether or not a woman making fun of rape fantasies means that it's okay to make fun of rape fantasies. lol

Oh I was pretty into Sailor Moon back when it was airing here in the states. I know all about Makoto and her talents.
I just feel I should get around to watching it again. It's been so long now, gotta get ready for the new anime.

The Light of El Cantare
Smile Precure 30:

I'm liking this new trend of the show dropping any pretense of having the characters do random shit for any greater reason than "wouldn't it be cool if......?". That said, damn. This episode was so horribly riddled with off-model faces, simplistic and sometimes outright bad art direction, and lame dialogue laced with educational factoids that it was pretty hard to watch at times. I mean, seriously:

t4gq4.jpg
CVRZP.jpg

ohai Kanetsugu.

And thanks to Jexhius criticizing some show or other in the past, I now have an eye for "I want to make this scene interesting but have no idea how" perspective fail in backgrounds:

Bad. There were a couple of genuinely funny moments like
Yayoi going into toku nerd mode and then electrocuting everyone underwater like a moron
, but this was the very definition of a throwaway budget-saving episode.

Ironically, Precure can now intentionally make itself look like this:

when the animation in previous series was actually just that bad, ololol:

At least next episode gon b gud if the preview is any indication.
Joker's back to kick some Precure ass, BLACK NOSE AKANBE, Precure get their own revival countdown clock and Candy becomes INFINITY, THE INFINITE MEMORY......something yet to be determined.

Just how many times are the Precure going to get trolled into thinking they're reviving the Queen of Marchenland when they really aren't? ololol.

Ah! I forgot to mention Zeroshiki was back! I'll have to watch bungaku shoujo before he goes away again!

Oh, nice!

Haha, sorry, that was actually just supposed to be a joke referencing the Simpsons about Icarus kind of saying "Yeah, I'll go with that too!" just like Homer does with Bart.

To avoid talking about rape, I suppose it's a question of whether or not the fact that Twilight (or Fifty Shades) is written by a women makes it okay or not.
Or, if you have to talk about it, whether or not a woman making fun of rape fantasies means that it's okay to make fun of rape fantasies. lol

True. Yeah, it's one of those tricky subjects people just try to handle in different ways I guess.

Ok, nice. Well, you've probably already heard this before but I recommend checking out the original Japanese version whenever you get around to watching it again.

Whoah! Mitsuhide's eyes look even more dead than I remember!
I've always had a thing for dead eyes. Honestly the very first avatar I considered using for Neogaf was a dead eyes picture of Victorique from the second ending of Gosick. Obviously I went with Minako instead. I think I might switch back to that one next actually.

Also I meant to mention this about every time I've quoted you and kept forgetting and that is, nice new avatar!

Damnit anyting set in Winter by KyoAni is so good...
Hyouka 21, K-On! 13, K-On!! 22. These episodes have particularly emotional moods and they're handled with such care and quality storyboarding. It's applicable for the K-on and Haruhi movies as well.

The neutral color tones in their outdoor backgrounds fit the scripts perfectly. It's even felt in indoor scenes since windows are often the central element of their composition. It really gives this 'mono no aware' and melancholic feel. And Winter contrejour creates such a powerful image (+1 reason to hype Wolf Children), KyoAni has top-notch directing that knows how to use it. There's an excellent contrejour scene I remember from K-on!! 22 when Azusa runs away when she tries to give her senpais chocolate. Wish I could give screencaps but my anime external drive just broke :(.

It also feels like the girls' moe level is enhanced by cold weather. The studio's soft puffy faces and incredible facial animation trademark style is perfect for episodes that focus on more negative emotions. Their characters' 'ganbare!' mentality and feminity (obvious in Hyouka 20) are put in evidence, their skin seems paler because of blush from the cold. There's a certain characteristic warmth that emanes from KyoAni's characters because of their fluffy clothes style, in Winter clothes it's even better.

Winter episode is KyoAni at its best!

So we meet again, macaroons and sindogs.

In this episode, the PreCure's travel the world of the stingiest of budgets. The police sirens wailing when they visited New York was pretty funny. Fortunately, Yayoi was there to save the day!

I guess I shouldn't have been surprised from this show but,
Asai is actually a woman.
I should have seen that.
A pretty great episode. Besides the weird Nene scene, it was pretty serious in tone and I think they pulled it off pretty good, and that cliffhanger. Sucks how this is the episode I finally manage to get caught up on. Gotta wait now to see how it turns out.

edit- shit this is at the end of the page...

Unirally was awesome. I think it was probably one of my most rented games as a kid. Gave me blisters from playing it too much.

Thanks, I drew it myself.
Though I've drawn every avatar I've used here.

SAO 9-10

2 great episodes. There is no way it can be that easy right for
Kirito and Asuna. I'm sure Heathcliffe will want Asuna for himself right?

There are only a couple of more episodes left, does the original material have enough for a second season or 1 season enough to tell the story?

I guess I'm on Team Asuna if I had to pick.

Tragic victim of fan death
I think the Aincrad stuff will be wrapped up by episode 14 or so and they'll move onto the next arc from what I've read in here. I could be terribly mistaken though!

Episode 14 is the end of Aincrad yes. At least judging by the title.

This. I wouldn't necessarily call it a good movie, but man did I have a blast.

I'm drifting towards this stance as time goes on. It was fun but I've little desire to rewatch it as I don't really care for it past the visuals. The pilot I can watch all day though.

What's that supposed to mean?

I dunno, sometimes people decide to understate something for dramatic effect. There seem to be very few people here who actually think that Redline is an okay or above average film which is mostly driven by the strong visuals while being danged down by a weak narrative with poor characters.

As an animation/audio showcase, my BD of Redline is pretty much untouchable save for my small ass Hosoda collection which also please on a deeper level.

Still, it's a film I can definitely go back to if I just want something awesome to look at in the background while I write.

That's a pretty accurate review. Nice animation though, you can see why it killed Madhouse.

The animation is really great to be sure. The yellow line race was especially impressive in its strong visual depiction of extreme speed.

The problem came after that, when they attempted to have a plot and characterization, but it was a bore and just felt like so much padding. The garish shiny platinum visual style is totally inappropriate in the slower, more intimate scenes. If they had to give some character motivation, they should have just kept it to the quick flash of flashbacks JD had once, which would have been acceptable.

Even beyond that, the content veered into the repulsive at times, especially though not exclusively in its depiction of women. Sonoshee is perhaps one of the worst female leads I've come across.

In the end, I feel that if you're going to make something that's all about the animation and style, you should

1) Keep it relatively short (30 minutes max would be ideal).

2) Keep it wordless.

Brand new two-minute theatrical trailer for Gothicmade.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU5pMBLfobk

This could actually be happening!

The Japanese production company Kadokawa began streaming a two-minute theatrical preview trailer on Sunday for Hana no Utame Gothicmade, the directorial debut of artist Mamoru Nagano (Five Star Stories).

Shigeyo Kawamura will star in the film as Berin, the utame (song girl) who plants the seeds of hope for peace among humans. Nozomu Sasaki will play the young prince Toriharon. Akio Ohtsuka, Ai Orikasa, Ikue Ohtani, and narrator Yoshiko Sakakibara round out the main cast.

In addition to directing the robot action film feature, Nagano conceived, wrote, storyboarded, and animated it. Yasuhiro Nakura (Metropolis, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) is serving as animation director, and Seikou Nagaoka (Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse, Strike Witches film) is handling the music. Maria Kawamura is singing the film's theme song "Sora no Ōji Hana no Utame."

The film will open in Japan on November 1, after first being slated for this past spring.
