Bayonetta 2 - WiiU (Director: Yusuke Hashimoto, Pub: Nintendo, Supervision:Kamiya)

I just don't understand the rage. When I saw the news I had mixed feelings.

1. I was super excited that a sequel to the best game this generation was actually be in made. And

2. Slight disappointment because it means Nintendo just forced me to buy a Wii U fairly early in its life cycle (likely day one) despite wanting to wait and pick it up cheaper down the track. Clever bastards.

Rage is unwarranted. Because there was little chance the game was getting a sequel without Nintendo's help.

If it makes you feel a little better, I don't think Bayonetta 2 will be out until next year, and by then there will be a lot more games to choose from.

Question: Didn't Bayonetta bomb?

No, it really didn't. While it's not as successful as Devil May Cry, it is more successful than most attempts at competing in that specific sub-genre. It sold over 300k in Japan, and over 300k in the US as well. Worldwide it shipped over a million units. That's hardly a bomb.

It has much better critical and commercial success than Ninja Gaiden 3, and I don't think Koei Tecmo is about to junk that franchise anytime soon. So Bayonetta is really well positioned to build on its reputation to be the main competitor against Devil May Cry in this field. With Ninja Theory handling DmC, it seems like a good place for Platinum Games to be for now.

As much as I would have loved to play this, the exclusive announcement is disappointing. Good for Nintendo I suppose. Sales will be interesting to see.

Oh yeah, they'll be released in the same year.

Are we expecting much from the sales for Metal Gear Rising? That seems like the kind of game that could go either way, from being a new pillar of the sub-genre to being your average MGS spinoff.

I'm betting 2-3 million worldwide. The MGS name still holds a lot of weight on consoles at least. Not to mention that the game looks fucking amazing anyways.

I think those would be super solid numbers, but I don't know how Konami would feel about them, especially after everything that's gone down with the game when it was originally put into production.

This generation has been noted many times as being one in which Japanese developers and publishers fell into irrelevance, but in my opinion the best developer on the planet is Platinum Games without contest. And Kamiya is the new Miyamoto.

Will get a WiiU as soon as this game is available. Thanks, Nintendo.

It didn't bomb, exactly, it could have just done better.

Yeah it didn't bomb, but Sega promoted it heavily on TV and it didn't meet the sales that Sega was expecting. That's why Sega didn't greenlight a sequel themselves. Will be interesting to see if Nintendo promotes it as much Sega did...

I'm always seeing this, but where exactly did Sega promote Bayonetta heavily?
Japan? Yes. USA? Don't know Europe? Totally not. It was a disaster actually, beside almost no ads, there was the problem with the release date. It was scheduled to be coming out at 8.1.2010 but was already available in december. To be fair Nintendo is the only videogame company beside Sony doing regular tv ads in Germany.

This is reasonable. I'm sure a lot of people shared this sentiment.

Dunno about mainland Europe but the game was heavily promoted in the UK. I saw a TV advert nearly every day, multiple times on a couple of channels.

What about Kamiya's actual game, The Wonderful 101?

Yep, The Wonderful 101 is scheduled for launch window, and is directed by Kamiya himself. Any PG fan/Kamiya fan should be getting a WiiU for W101, first and foremost.

Personally, I'm stoked about W101. For me it's been the most exciting WiiU game since E3.

Tenchu has ninjas.
From Software makes Tenchu.
From Software makes Demon/Dark Souls.
Dark Souls sequel exclusively on Wii U 2013

From Software cancels DLC for 360/PS3, announces Prepare to Die edition for Wii U

Betrayal #2, people flip their shit again.

A part of me kinda wants to see that, just because of how entertaining this meltdown has been.

From what i have seen it was promoted pretty heavily In the US. In NYC there were huge ads and billboards in time square and broadway, taxi-top advertisements, commercials on alot of channels like comedy central and CN (they were good ones also) magazine print ads and etc.

Between Bayonetta 2, W101, NSMBU, and MH3U, I'm really ecstatic about the Wii U's upcoming software. That's more good stuff than I've ever seen on a previous system I own, which I won't name because it will make people upset (and I don't mean the Wii).

MMA events as well. As much people tend to hate Sega for not green lighting a sequel, can't blame them for not doing it after seeing the sales that Bayonetta (not that impressive) got after the shitton of money Sega spend on ads.

I'm very disappointed in Platinum with regard to this decision. To take something birthed and nurtured on the HD twins and then betray the fanbase in favor of an entirely different ecosystem... this is a crying shame.

At least you like Mio.

You're an A+ man in my book.

I pretty obviously do not make the decisions on whether a Vanquish sequel should exist or not, but if you are that offended by me not explicitly including the implied words "to me" in that post, I really get the feeling that it wouldn't matter to you if I were, anyway.
Bullocks, we all know you have connections Mr. Insider.

Just look at this thread

We should keep track of all the nutters in this thread. Then when Bayonetta 2 comes out for Wii U, match it up with people in the "[OT] Wii U online handle thread". I imagine we'll see a rather large cross over :)

Yeah, 4 Wii-U titles that I'm definitely already interested in. Be interesting to see what else there will be. I'm sticking with my PS3 for multiplatform titles though, unless the Wii U versions contain extra stuff that appeals to me.

I won't be buying anymore of your games, Platinum.

PS: I unliked you on Facebook too.

haha this is a great parody post of what went down in this thread

unless you're serious. 'cause then, what!

Bayonetta is getting a sequel, what's to complain about? This was never a series going to get next-gen budget treatment, so this is a good compromise.

Ehh, I'm still a bit lukewarm to it. *shrugs* I just don't think it is ... even on par with Madworld.

*faints*

Assuming they both run the same, I tend to go with whatever system the controller is best suited for.

Exactly. I can understand disappointment, but the whole 5 Stages of Grief thing is going too far. Speaking of which, have we made it to bargaining and depression yet in this thread?

Same deal in Canada. Unless you're watching an American network at a specific time of the day, you're not going to see any of the advertisements people speak of here. Nintendo, Sony and MS are the only ones who run ads on Canadian television, with Nintendo being the only one who does regular advertising during primetime TV.

This is reasonable. I'm sure a lot of people shared this sentiment.
Yeah, shame that those people were scared out of the thread by everything else that went on in here.

So happy that they are funding and publishing the sequel... oh.
Well if it was cancelled* it means they greenlit a sequel at one point which would suggest they were indeed happy with its sales to an extent. Then earlier this year we had a huge change in strategy for SEGA as a company with a ton of staff getting fired, cancelled projects etc
*As is rumoured.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Ehh, I'm still a bit lukewarm to it. *shrugs* I just don't think it is nearly as good as something like Viewitful Joe, or even on par with Madworld.

Madworld is the worst Platinum Games title by some distance. Consult your doctor, theres something wrong.

lol Dr. Blade don't worry about it, you'll feel even more disappointed when Chris Paul leaves after this season

Query: Who here, for whatever reasons, missed out on or was disinterested in Bayonetta, and given this announcement and surrounding nonsense is is now interested in Bayonetta 2?
Missed this on the first pass through the thread...

I played Bayonetta, but never finished it, partly because I played the PS3 version pre-patch and always had other things to play when I was with the PS3 again. I'll be more intrigued if I can have the original on Wii U, as well, but Bayonetta is the game I'll reach for the next time I have a PS3 in my hands again.

I dunno what to say to this. But at least it's a bit saner than some of the reactions we've already seen, which makes me think it might actually be legit.

The most flawed diamond is still a diamond, though. ;)

Cheers for the replies. Interesting to see some people who haven't played the original, now interested in the sequel.

It is, but keep in mind "launch window" is up until March.

I wonder when they will confirm The Wonderful 101 to have multiplayer. The E3 trailer clearly showed four players, labeled P1 through P4, working together, even though the game was listed as single-player. And an NOA rep, during one of the walkthrough videos recorded last year, said they would be making announcements about potential multiplayer modes sometime in the future, all but confirming it. I don't expect them to manage online with the level of activity going on (four players all managing an army) but local co-op would still be sweet icing on the cake.

And speaking of multiplayer -- didn't the Bayo 2 rumors back in the day peg it as a co-op title? I wonder if that holds true with the real Bayo 2 we're all anticipating now. Or perhaps they might try something like the "helper mode" in NSMBU and Rayman. Maybe a second player, using the GamePad, can assist the person playing Bayonetta. Hmm...

I liked Madworld a lot, but it was not Bayonetta. That game was something a bit more special and I'm extremely happy to see a sequel is actually going to come.

The most disappointing news of the year was that the sequel was likely canned because of SEGA going through financial issues. I'm actually pleasantly surprised Nintendo came in to save it. Moreso, this may be the best launch of all time because I'll get two P* titles in less than a few months span.

You're referring to Wonderful 101 by March and Metal Gear Rising after the New Year, right? Because I don't think Bayo 2 will be out that soon. :p

It's possible we won't see more Bayo 2 until E3. Best case scenario, they debut a gameplay trailer right before the Wii U launch, for an extra surge of hype among the core.

It will be bought the day I buy a Wii U, which might be earlier than Bayo 2's release, but it doesn't look like it will be launch day. I don't think I can buy a console just because of one game, even if it were a Mario 64-type-ish or Uncharted, but yes, Wonderful 101 and Bayo 2 will be enough, plus whatever other B-tier games (personally speaking, of course) are out by then.

Oh yeah, damn I got too excited too quick. :/

Damnit, they just need to bring Metal Gear Rising on the Wii U and I'll just changed the name to the Nintendo Platinum.

That's okay though, my Xbox 360 will do just fine for MGR. P* will get all my money (As always). :p

I've currently got Bayonetta in my Gamefly queue at the moment. I never got around to playing it, since I didn't have a 360 and heard bad things about the PS3 version, but since I got a 360 now, I'll definitely be picking it up.

Granted, I already watched an LP, but this is the definitely the sort of game you need to play anyway. Can't wait to see what they'll do.

Just bumping Alistair Roo's Bayo 2 box mockup to the new page, because Bayonetta with the blue color scheme (as per the trailer) and the new logo are sexy:

Looks pretty bad. And where's the Sega logo?
I asked him to put the Sega logo on since their logo will be on the final product, but he said Sega just owns the IP and is "irrelevant." His words, not mine!

While I disagree with him about Sega, I do think the mockup looks lovely. (We just need the Sega logo to the left of the P* logo, evenly spaced.)

Huh? In what sense. They are nothing alike and have different types of jobs.

In that whatever games Miyamoto made were absolute gold, and the same with Kamiya. His track record is impeccable.

Well Kamiya has only directed one of those games. Vanquish was the most amazing one and Mikami took that concept over to his new company.

... Ok. Not sure if Vanquish is better than Bayonetta, but ok. No argument that it's great. Not sure why that would diminish Kamiya's Bayonetta, or all his games before then.
