Microsoft announces renewed Trademark for "Killer Instinct"

The CGI render of Jago in the Killer Instinct booklet was the most impressed I ever was by visuals. I couldn't imagine games ever looking that good.

Might be this

I loved these mid-90's Rare renders. The same style permeated throughout DKC. Still looks great today, simple but not either crude or attempting realism.

I always hear people saying get NRS to make a new KI, maybe Im being pessimistic but that just sounds awful to me. Let them stick to MK.

I'm just going to put some names out there and ask what grabs you and why? Rare, Namco, Dimps, Capcom, SNK, NRS, Arc Systems Works, Team Ninja, SCE Superbot, SSM, Sega-AM2, Platinum.

ReXXXSoprano, I did say it would be nice if it were optional. No need to not offer the original game version balance, but a hardcore fan or two bringing a list of changes and working with someone to alter values and attributes wouldn't be too expensive (if it were that simple), I'd think. Just releasing the game in some HD- and internet play-friendly fashion would fine enough, but it would be nice to see new, much-appreciated options for the most guaranteed part of your sales, the established fanbase.

Balancing is a lot more complicated than it sounds. Just trust me on that. I just want to play KI and just wreck people. That was the fun of it anyway. If MS wanted to invest in some balance changes I wouldn't throw my hands up and say no if it was done correctly. But to me that just seems time wasted that could be used getting it to us. If MS is serious about doing the HD thing then do so. If not I can get my fix at anytime.

If the KIs are re-released it'll be literal minutes before awful, broken shit is uploaded to Youtube. And people will screech about how terrible they are and how lazy whoever ported them is, and how much better their favourite fighter franchise is. But that's what they are, They're a product of their time, their place. As far as I'm concerned they're absolutely fine.

The majority of KI's myriad of broken shit across both games are either already available on YouTube or has been heavily documented already.

All the rest of that is the same old shit song and dance people do everyday. Nothing new there.

And I completely agree about KI being fun even now for people to enjoy if they choose. And trust me there is a great game under the broken. Just be open enough to find it is all I ask.

And that's what lead to them making almost everything in KI2 safe so you could poke all day with everyone.

The game I really want to see a sequel for is Weapon Lord. I wish Namco would give SC a rest and go back to this because the first game had awesome characters and a promising system.

That would be a nice idea but frankly weapon based fighting games need some graphic violence. I'm not a gore nut but I can't even look at SC without saying "Yeah he just got impaled by a gigantic sword and nothing."

I loved Weapon Lord though, that was a fantastic game that almost nobody played. Good call.

Not sure if I understand your question, are you asking who I would pick to make KI3? TBH its hard for me to imagine anyone other than Kevin Bayless/Mark Betteridge/Stamper bros etc making a KI3. And since the chances of them getting back together with MS and putting a full on effort into a new game are worse than me scoring with that Orchid cosplayer its really not worth talking about. :[

I hope that that isn't the same Kevin that wanted to turn KI into a RPG. Edit: I see that was Chris Tilston.

That thread almost got closed.

On topic, I would be ok with NRS rebooting it.

Some people there have said they wanted to make a KI game, but I doubt WB would let them make a game exclusive to one platform, unless MS put up some serious cash.

One weird thing about anyone that isn't Rare doing it though is the roster, KI only has like what 15 characters? That's kind of low for a fighting game these days, do the new devs introduce new characters? Would people be cool with that?

Master Chief in KI confirmed

Is this supposed to be some type of argument? WTF does that have to do with his capabilities in making a new KI, dumb idea or not. Even if I take you seriously, you suggested Ed Boon take over a new KI, well he was behind MK Mythologies/Konquest Mode in MK:D etc. so youre contradicting yourself.

I've learned lots from your post about the some of the original designers attached to the game. Sorry if I come off as confrontational that was not my intent.

I would love for KI to come back for a part 3. I wouldn't want NRS to do it though.

Hopefully they plop 1 & 2 on XBLA with online at the very least.

I dunno, the arcade I regularly went to KI was the game everyone was crowded around for hours. I remember waiting for at least 30 minutes just to get my damn turn. Waaaay more than SSFII/MK/VF etc.

At my local arcade it was by far the most popular game when it was out. I know they had to routinely empty the machine of tokens. The great thing about KI was the combo system was great for casual players. Once you learned the basics of the combo system it was very easy to pull off nice combo's.

Why did the take out the voice overs for combo's in KI2? The game felt so empty without the announcer screaming every combo in KI2.

Yeah the causal appeal is what got people hooked, the graphics/sound didnt hurt either. And yeah they never should have removed the announcer. With KI2 I think they tried to make the game more conducive to high level play, removing the "wait for your opponent to use an opener, block it, yay free hits every single time" was necessary but they also removed the fun in the process. And how do you take out Cinder and Chief Thunder, but add Maya and Kim Wu? Tusk was cool.

Nostalgia blast! Man, I remember when this game dominated arcade floors. I trained for hours on my SNES to be able to pull off Jago's 12-hit combo consistently or Orchid's infinite loop. That said, I'm dubious about bringing this property back. It has its place in history, but I don't think the gameplay's gonna hold up.

Happy that this thread exists, though.

I don't think the gameplay is going to hold up either.

But I think the characters and tone/vibe can be brought back.

They would have to obviously update the character designs some. And I think the gameplay/physics would have to be heavily retooled, but still keep the heart of it with long combos and combo breakers, and all of that.

Bet 4J is remaking the games for XBLA. A pack of all of them.
I'd buy that for ten dollars. The two arcade games never got a proper home port- KI Gold for the N74 was close, but it was missing the ending cinematics, IIRC. Maybe a few other things, too.

I love this series but was disappointed when they omitted Chief Thunder From KI Gold for the N64.

Hopefully they add him back to the roster with whatever their release plans are...if they're not trolling us that is. =/

Now that my excitement has died down

I remember digging into the old rare trademarks from time to time

This is the first time killer instinct has been under Microsoft control

Nintendo held it until 2006 (Rare was bought in 2002) but it never made its way over to MS. So I'm guessing MS had to clear it with Nintendo first before giving anyone from Rare the go ahead. (Probably a lot of people bitching about it at rare)

Even though we have seen killer instinct 3 referenced in grabbed by the ghoulies

Why would a MS run site announce they renewed the trademark for something like this if there wasn't a game on the way? Makes no sense. Hopefully we'll get news soon.
