XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Demo released on Steam

This demo was fun. Loved how the story mission killed off your whole squad except one guy. Nice hommage to what your first mission in the old game could have been.

You can also see that they are trying to do a few tutorial missions before they open up the full game. You can already see the beginnings with the research stuff and choosing between missions.

I was already going to get this but this just solidified my day 1 purchase. Going with the 360 version though. The iMac video card is shit and it did not perform that well. I can also se this working just great with a gamepad.

why is a demo 5.4 gbs?

Well a quick glance says that more then half 3.7 is from the movies folder. Almost all of those it looks like the demo does not use.

Anyway GAF why must you hurt me so. All this talk about playing a Turn-Based game(a XCOM game no less) on the PC with a controller is making me lose my faith in humanity.

Medieval!

A whole 6KB/s more than the plan/speed tier I was on 8 years ago!

HAHAHAHAHA the demo has ALL movie files!
I just saw the ending of the game!

HAHAHAHAHAHAA

Great, that'll save me 4GB on release/pre-load day. Also, why did you watch the ending? I assume you're not interested in playing through the game?

You don't play X-COM for the story.
I mean, what do you expect to happen?

Oh well at least when release comes around I can just drop the movie files into the install folder and take off a good chunk of the download. Either way somebody has fucked up big time and I'll probably spend the next 6 weeks dodging spoliers.

Game comes out in a few weeks. So it really only moved up the dodging spoilers by that amount of time.

What's really awkward is how some videos are at like 720p+ while others seem to be at 800x600 or something.

I imagine some are meant to be full screen and the other are meant to fill a smaller window. Say like the mission briefing screen for example. That's my guess at least.

Yeah, I meant weeks not months :>

Nobody is expecting the greatest story but even so, nobody should really want any major scenarios given away before it's even out. It's no big deal but some people go nucking futs over stuff like that.

Demo was short but oh so sweet (though definitely a little too short)...

Battles (as scripted as they were for tutorial missions) felt very tense, as they should be for an X-COM game. Action-cam was quite exciting (especially for headshots and other critical hits) but methinks the novelty will wear off and I'll probably end up turning them off. Since they don't give you much of a look at the base management side of things, I don't have any real impressions (aside from the fact that it looks really cool, I like the ant view, though I do kinda miss the old-style bases a little bit). Runs like an absolute dream on highest settings (v-sync, 60fps locked, 1280x1024 borderless windowed) and looks stunning for a turn-based action/base management game.

As someone earlier said, it's XCOM...

Will probably replay every few days until the real thing comes, and I will try the control pad options just to see if it's any good (I hear it's pretty decent). The real thing cannot come soon enough!

O-O~

Yeah that is what i am worried about. I don't care about story, but I do care about some of the other stuff. Say info on the aliens or maybe unannounced alien species for example. Which is why I think to play it safe it is time to stop reading this thread or any future XCOM thread. Here is hoping I have the will power and luck to avoid any annoying spoilers.

Kind of disappointed with the textures. I hope the final version has them improved.

Also, pretty short demo. And don't bother replaying for the other mission, it's exactly the same.

If what I watched is really the end to the game (which I don't have many doubts about) then that is some really abrupt as fuck cut to credits, haha.

The only problem I see with the demo is that it's too short.

I like that they have an in-game option for borderless windowed mode, it takes 10 minutes to implement and has so many advantages, every game should have it.

My solution to all games:

WinSet, Style, -0xC00000,a ;
WinMove, a, , 0, 0, 1440, 900 ;

In Borderlands 2 it makes my game micro-stutter even when it runs at 60fps, while fullscreen mode runs flawlessly.
