Oops.

It's just like the C word isn't going to be erased from common Australian vernacular because Americans think it's sexist. I refrain from using it here out of respect but that doesn't mean I think it's bad or rude or sexist. This was discussed a few pages back (many, since the great purge) and you could pinpoint all the people arguing that it's not that bad as Australian. Great stuff.

I gotta say that Timedog bringing that up in a completely unrelated thread is pretty questionable.
I wouldn't mind since everyone is using the version I rehosted on my webserver to use once. 40,000 hits on that image last week. Perfect chance for an account suicide if I wanted.

If anything, it'll teach people how to rehost things.

Asking for repetitive memes to be banned is barely short of "being banned for unpopular views." It's all subjective, but I haven't seen anyone really articulate a legitimate harm to discussion from gifs. Are there people waiting in the wings to discuss the virtues of pop-music who are scared by the pop gifs? If so (I saw the guy above me), does that want outweigh the benefits of having that community around? I don't think so. I think someone said this already, but often times those gifs do kind of bring about a bit of camaraderie that I think is greater than their dismissive uses.

And they're fun. Quit being so damn serious.

A well placed Nicholson or thisisgaf still make me smile. Not every post has to be some super serious addition to the topic. Gaf is an internet forum, nobody can change that. Fight the power.

Eh, I don't think they should be banned. However, I do find it tiring when every image that gains some fame gets posted ad nauseum by people who are trying to shoehorn it into being appropriate for every situation due to the perception that it's automatically funny.

But that's just me.

I don't know anyone in the US who considers "cunt" to be any worse than "shit".
As far as I know it has primarily been the UK that has considered it a class 5 swear. Only recently have I seen people from the US complain about it online.

I guess I'm well on track for being one of those old people who casually uses word that the youngins express utter shock and horror over.

I agree. Many are annoying, but I'm just saying it's not something to be petitioning for a complete ban for misuse.

I've always thought that it was mainly a US thing. And I've personally never really known it to have any other meaning that "ultimate derogatory term for a woman."

Really? I think you have that completely backwards. In the UK, cunt seems equivalent to asshole - a harsh insult but not nuclear level.

In the US, cunt is much worse than shit. You can say "shit" on TV. "Cunt" would garner a hefty fine.

Considering Australian vernacular is a crude form of the UK mother tongue, I'd think you were right.

Yeah it's crazy how you guys use the word "Fosters" instead of "beer".

Here in the UK cunt is the "harshest" word and is at the top of the list of naughtiness (generally speaking). However it doesn't carry the misogynist connotations it seems to have over in America land (if anything it's directed towards men) and in some areas is used as a term of affection.

While we're on the topic of bannable gifs, what about this one?

When you see an apple, and you know it's an apple, Neogaf will always disagree and say just because it's an apple, it could possibly morph into an orange, therefore it should be identified as an orange, and you should address it as a orange. Yeah nah. 5 seconds later banned.

It's not seen as misogynistic anywhere but on NeoGAF.com

Is this meant to be a metaphor for something?

You're welcome to feel that way of course. But even if you think people are too thin-skinned and too PC and you feel strongly that transgendered people should not be given the pronoun of their identified gender, why be quite so glib about it? I mean, I deal with a lot of people in the run of a day or the run of a week who I think are being unreasonable, as you are expressing here, but I don't intentionally try to push their buttons to hurt them or be cruel. I certainly wouldn't try to reduce what someone feels is a very serious part of their personal identity to an analogy about fruit, even if I thought they were inaccurately characterizing themselves. I just try to be nice to people, especially if they're trying to live their lives and doing so causes no harm to me.

I think you must know that the only possible reaction you could elicit from this is hurting others. So I'm not really sure why you'd do it.

I've seen the word cis used before but I have no idea what it means and have been too afraid to ask. Could a kind soul fill in my knowledge gap please?

So you're saying Apples are always superior to Oranges in taste and value? I AGREE!

As for everything else, I don't quite get it.

Cis is a word that refers to someone who is not transgendered. So basically, if you were born a dude, you've got a dude's bits, you self-identify as a dude, you use a male pronoun, there's no gender dysphoria, you're cis-gendered.

Normally the word only comes up when you need a word to mean "not transgendered". I'm male. I wouldn't identify as a cis-male normally, although that's what I am. It's just an extra adjective/noun if the context needs it.

If you want to say something, you should just say it. If you are trying to badly make the point that people should be addressed by their preferred pronouns and you don't like that, you are a balloon head. If you are trying to make the ridiculous point that GAF expects you to never be wrong and guess correctly in all cases, you are even more ridiculous.
