I find the way people way people use retard and aspergers as insults way more insensitive than any gender related insult.

It's like someone let devo re-write the rules and no one was told

With cunt, I can understand that reasoning, kinda. But in my experience, women use bitch just as often, if not more, than men. So how does use of that word make GAF a boys club?
My mother used to call herself Queen bitch. So women have no problem throwing it around.

I understand your point of giving words no power and agree with it somewhat, but it requires both sides, the person saying and the person listening, to give it no power. Over a message board we will never have any idea whether the person saying it really is a bigot or if the word has no power to them, and we don't want to allow GAF to become a place where bigots can justify their thoughts openly. I think that's the reasoning.
I realize and understand with that. I just don't want to be generalized into a bucket with the actual people who are horrible people, just because some language (which by itself is neutral) has bad connotations to people.

Honestly, bitch is among the lightest "bad words" I know in English. I wouldn't call anyone a slut, but I wouldn't hesitate calling like 80 percent of the people I know a bitch to their face if a situation made it fitting.

But maybe that's because I'm not a native speaker.

Why do some people here want to call women "bitches" so fucking much?

If you can't see why it's offensive I don't know what to tell you.
Are people seriously arguing over whether calling someone a bitch is offensive?

If I'm going to call someone a bitch, it's with the strict intention to offend. Same with douchebag, asshole, or any other brand of insult.

It's not a subconscious or conscious effort to subjugate a "marginalized" group of people, though.

My mom once watched the Ultimate Warrior DVD that WWE put out, then took a lap around the house yelling "I have the ultimate pussy!" I just took her word for it.

Totally unrelated to the topic, but this post reminded me of that.

How long would Lisa Lampanelli last on GAF?
It doesn't really seem like her thing. Also, she propabley wouldn't recite routines that she gets paid for. Her entertainment personality could be similar to her "actual" character but if she was offensive to people, she would get banned. I'm sure she has a fan site if that is the kind of thing you want.

Matter of time.

I use the word from time to time, but not generally as a direct insult toward a woman. "Sup, bitches!" "Son of a bitch!" and various and sundry other combinations.

Just heard her on Stern the other day I guess she lost like 80 LBS. She said "I am the happiest cunt in the world Howard"!! I love this woman.

It's almost like I've actually been called bitch and threatened a bunch so I don't have a good relationship with it.
Another angle:

If there was no such word as bitch, but instead people used "loser" when talking about women, what difference would that make? All insults are intended to belittle the receiving person.

(yes I realize loser doesn't have gender specific orientations)

Cyan's post was way better than mine. What a douche.

Yes and I'm saying the words shouldn't have any weight at all.

I understand the correlation between some of the words and the actions, and how those people have been treated by said users of those words doesn't permeate into who I am. I don't do any of those things, I don't treat them like that. I don't go to my gay friends and call them a "faggot", I wouldn't dare.

However, I find it improper to base people's personalities based on their word usage instead of their actions. Granted that's all you have to go on with ~the internet~ but it's still shit.

A person should not be guilty by association, and that's exactly what you're saying.

Association is the only way words have meaning at all.

It's almost like I've actually been called bitch and threatened a bunch so I don't have a good relationship with it.

It's almost like you could even link to the many times it's happened right here on GAF.

Ah, I completely forgot about using it as an expletive.

I love this woman.
I like some of her stuff but she has a host of jokes revolving around her sexual preferances that just don't do it for me. I try to suport female comics (woo-hoo me, I'm so great...). Hopefully she is taking care of herself (the weight loss is impressive), I'd like to see her around for awhile.

Which gets to the crux of the issue.

I'm sure soon we will only use pictures as communication. The way things are going someone somewhere will be offend by something you say. Then the pictures will be off limits and we will just grunt.

A buddy of mine and I have a ongoing joke about the moderation on this site. GAF is far too strict. Sure it weeds out the trolls but it also makes discussions impossible on issues if you arent with the hive. I got banned for in that creeppic topic just for disagreeing with a poster. I literally just said "no" and was banned lol smh

The whole bitch thing is ridiculous as well.

What would be a non-gendered word that otherwise expressed the same sentiment as bitch? Because I can't come up with one right now.

I think that's the main problem I have with the ban. It has a very specific meaning, even if you disregard the "female" part, that most alternatives don't have.

It's a matter of picking your discussions just like one picks liquor stores late at night. You can generally tell which ones are bad news from a distance.

like "fuckface"?

I was trying to get the gender aspect out, because the crux of the issue is "it's just an insult, except X group of people are offended by it because it's obviously meant to assault that group of people 100% of the time"

Obviously.

I...don't understand what you're saying her. If everybody always used "loser" as an insult targeted towards women then it would, ipso facto, become gender-specific.

So you were trying to have a one word discussion, then?

The slur bitch is problematic because it attempts to insult and demean based upon a gendered identity, i.e., "I'm insulting you by calling you a girl," but in an even more offensive manner. Slurs based on race aren't tolerated here (rightly so) and neither should slurs based on gender.
Also, calling someone a retard is fucking offensive as well. I spend every working day of my life with amazing individuals with autism and other cognitive/learning/behavior/mental disabilities, and I respect them 110% more than a lot of you. Most of them display more empathy, thoughtfulness, and common sense than those of you arguing for the right to use "bitch" and "retard," etc. Insulting someone based on the general societal perception of negativity (oppressively and wrongly) associated with people who have disabilities is fucked up.
Women, disabled folks, people of color, queer folk, and other categories of oppressed people shouldn't be utilized to fuel insulting statements. Break the association of negativity with being gay, with being autistic, with being black, with being a woman, and those insults stop being useful. By relying on them and using them, you reinforce the bullshit negativity and oppressiveness surrounding their social positioning.

Why do you need a single insulting word? Someone earlier in the thread said they used it because they thought the woman was foolish, irresponsible, or crazy. What's wrong with those? If anything, there are more ways to express yourself by saying what you mean instead of trying to call names.

Evillore needs to "weed" out suspect posters. If not he would lose revenue, gotta please the common folk. How else would he afford his lavish vacations?

So if I said something like, "Bitch-ass pussy mods are too busy sucking dicks and fostering shitty community opinions than actually fucking moderating"
It would be ok because its in quotes, right? Help me out here gaf.

Damn guys, my bitch is getting real bitchy today. Those little puppies are sucking her dry as they get bigger.

my opinion is context. I feel like I'm dancing on landmines even trying to be sarcastic with the word.

It's exhausting trying to keep up with what formerly ok word is banned or if it's only banned on a situational basis and if so, how it's ok to say it. It'd be much easier for everyone if people would keep their panties untwisted.

fake edit: oh no I said panties I must be insensitive to women.

That doesn't seem to really mean the same. I mean, bitch isn't the same as asshole, is it?

To some people, which is the reason why lack of context in text form is such a problem with this stuff. Not to me. Everything can be a compliment or an insult. "Man, you're the MAN!" versus "You're such a MAN", etc.

is calling a dude a """""bitch"""""" fair game?

According to Ice-T's OG album, yes.
