Sorry for the noob ass question, but what would mods bring to a game like XCOM?

I'm trying to take in as much as I can, because something tells me the PS3 version is going to be fucked.

Skins and gameplay changes. Maybe even total conversions.

Hmm that GI review says the levels tend to look the same, not enough variations. It's something they could change with DLC though.

Not that levels look the same (although that might happen, I dunno), but that they repeat.

As much as I appreciate XCOM’s outstanding balance and tight design, the game could benefit from more variety across the board, and not just because I saw maps repeat (albeit with different spawn locations) more often than I’d like.

Jintor mentioned that it didn't occur on his playthrough so maybe it's random.

Awesome video! I can see myself loosing many hours in multiplayer. A lot of fun.
Also that one time when they both...just watch the video.

So I guess normal ironman for the first play and first ever xcom game. Demo was fun, but I uninstalled it just before the difficulty change option came to my attention.

ed: Preloading. The wait begins...

Player1: i'm gonna use this really clever technique he won't see coming!

Player2: i'm going to utilize a pretty awesome technique!

both use pretty much the same tactic! >__<

that was indeed classic

One does not necessarily automatically exclude the other.

It kind of does though. If there is a plethora of good, free, user made maps, who's going to buy official ones? Unless they hobble the editor so they get to use unique features or terrains.

Steam Cloud or no, the Green Man Gaming $10 credit pushed me over the edge.

Preload ahoy! Getting 6.3 mb/s down from Steam, which is good for my connection.

You're sitting there doing nothing, probably a good time to reload your weapon. This game is painful to watch in the hands of people who've seemingly never played a tactics game.

It's painful to watch other people playing. I feel like a veteran when watching some shmuck play! I'm yelling at the screen "Use run and gun!" An observer mode would be intolerable for me!

I just watched some of it and I know exactly what part you're talking about. I just gave up because it hurts to watch someone give up a guaranteed double kill so he can run off to save a soldier that's going to bleed out before he gets there.

I'm pretty sure Civilization 5 has scenario packs but also has a map editor.
It not like it's uncommon for PC games to allow for modding / mapping but still have official maps and expansions get released for it even though the same content can be made by users.

Edit:
Are you perhaps new to PC gaming?

Anybody else think that like the game NOT being released right now is stupid? The files are there... right there.. the game is ready.. what are we waiting for?

When are we going to get past these arbitrary archaic retail related timed release dates?

When publishers realise PC gamers rarely buy in bricks and mortar and that even if they release the PC version before the console version it's not going to cannibalise sales

This. But, an observer mode would still be nice to watch maybe some higher level players go at it. Some GAF grudge matches, eh?

I'm surprised this thread is keeping up with the Dishonored thread, I really want this to succeed :(

I remember also being under the impression, way long ago way long ago when shooter XCOM was first being shown, that this XCOM was an XBLA title. Was that ever the case at some point before, or maybe a rumor that was going on at the time? Either way, it's interesting that the two games switched placed on which one is the retail release main course and the XBLA side-dish.

I'm still interested in shooter XCOM. I like the 50's gmen vs aliens setting and now we can enjoy it without the "but they gave us this instead of real X-COM" stigma.

This has never been an XBLA title.

This isn't the first time I've seen people think this was an XBLA/PSN thing, but I have absolutely no idea where that rumor came from since it's much older than the news about the XCOM shooter.
