Geneforge 1-5 - PAYWHATYOUWANT (ended) - Among the finest RPG's ever created

I am a bit amused (and saddened at the same time) by the fact that this thread is longer than the OT. Anyway, enjoy your super cheap indie games, GAF! Gonna go to bed. I'll answer any unanswered questions tomorrow.

Geneforge 1 is stuttering for me... Anyone else suffering from this? Changing the comparability helped somewhat, but it's still a little annoying.

Also, I'm having a blast with it so far! The lore and world-building are very well done and the combat is fun. The dialogues are a little shallow, but maybe because that's the beginning of the game or the first game. Looking forward to the rest of the game and the series :)

I see you post in the project eternity, so this should be right up your alley, and while the writing isn't quite the as good as the infinity engine games, its still fantastic, and I would love to hear some future impressions.

reposted from the OT. Rambling a bit here (6 AM here, been up all night :lol)

Downloaded all five from GOG, went through the manuals a bit, and then fired up the first one. Had to fiddle around with the settings a bit and then get it running in windowed mode, but it was smooth sailing after that.

I loved the introduction to the world and the lore so far is really cool. This whole idea of Shapers with all of their ancient secrets and intense training, mysteriously abandoned islands, the different creations, serviles (
and the issue of "awakened" serviles)
. It's already piqued my interest for sure.

The graphics are certainly primitive by today's standards, but I honestly don't have a problem with them. They get the job done. Plus, Vogel's writing does a great job of conveying what the visuals might not with loads of wonderful flavour text for people, places, and items. I love when the text pops up, it does a great job of setting the mood.

Does anyone else play their own music in the background? Just the repeating ambient sound by itself was a little jarring, but I put on some sweet synth music and it worked perfectly, haha. Probably going to try a few different soundtracks going forward.

Unfortunately, some work caused me to start the game way later than I was hoping, so I had to save and quit once I was about to pass out from lack of sleep. I managed to explore the first village after the tutorial section and pick up a few quests. Can't wait to play more tomorrow, though.

All in all, I'm very impressed. Which sort of surprised me to be honest. With some of these really big, old school RPG's it takes a while for me to get genuinely interested, but I'm already feeling that need to hop right back in. And I already find myself thinking about the lore and wondering what's going to happen next. The game presents you with some intriguing mysteries literally right away and doesn't reveal too much up front by nature of the intro.

Grabbing everything you see? Hahahaha, definitely not. There are vendors to sell stuff to (one in that initial town already) but they're not going to buy bowls and trash off of you, that stuff's just there for atmosphere. If you grab everything your inventory is going to get very full very fast.

Ah, okay. That's a major relief. Too used to modern day Fallout or something I guess, haha. Going to drop all that next time I play.

Almost forgot to mention that I chose a Shaper as my class. They seemed really interesting with their creature summons (agent sounded cool also, but it said they were harder to play so). As a shaper, even though I use summons and magic spells almost always, is it good to have a dagger as like a last resort? I have one that I found equipped at the moment.

Yeah, always keep something on you. You'll still be able to use most weapons to some effectiveness as a shaper, even swords, you just won't be brutally effective with them like a Guardian would. Your real class combat constraint is armor, you're almost always going to be incredibly fragile (or else have no carrying capacity because you're wearing 40lb magical platemail)

The summoning system is soooooooo good. I always try to use other classes, but then realize I'll miss out on this effing awesome summoning system :/

A bit more than 50 hours left for the deal!

Well this is a fantastic deal. I'd been interested in these games before, but this is too good to pass up. Now I just need to find the time to actually play them sometime.

bought

are they going to e-mail the Steam and GoG codes to me or do I have to register on their site?

They automatically register you on their website and send you login + pw (which you can change). You can request the codes from the "Game Wallet" tab after logging in.

You get automatically registered when you buy your first game. You should receive an email with user and pass and use those to get the steam key.

Played a little bit more tonight.

Spending a lot of time talking to everyone I see. The dialogue is great. I love the sense of mystery as to the purpose and origins of the island, what's happening to it currently, and why the shapers left. It's such a great premise for a game. I also somehow have two fyoras tagging along with me. Surprised I was able to do it so soon, but I managed to summon a second one after I hit level 5 I think so I'm feeling powerful at the moment.

Though I went to do my first sidequest and almost got demloished. Had to clear an abandoned fort named Watchill. The local servile village was getting harassed by creatures that constantly came from there, so I had to go in and figure out what was going on. It was pretty hard. By the end I blew almost all of my healing potions and both of my summons were almost dead. Might have been a bit too low level to take that on already :lol but I got through by the skin of my teeth.

Also got to talk to a few NPC's that I won't spoil in that zone who revealed some more background info on the story and it's making me really eager to play (just like after the first night). Game is a blast thus far.

How did you like the setup of the summons? That it allows you to put more ability points into your summons based on how much mana you have, or create more low level creature (like one that attacks EVERYTHING because it has no intelligence, haha). I think this is a really unique approach to this aspect.

Yeah, I hope the email just got delayed then

EDIT: better late than never - the emails have arrived. Steam code is not working though. I like GoG better anyway so I don't mind.

Caved in at 10 dollars as I would feel too cheap to only give them 25 cents. What I like especially about this bundle is that you get more rewards depending on how much you pay. I was familiar with this series before but was uncertain if it was something for me. Unfortunately I do not see myself playing it yet, but maybe this Christmas. Redeemed it through GOG at least.

Oh, is Gnomoria worth it?
Can't link because I am on iPad, but google "gnomoria site:neogaf.com" . I made a similar thread for gnomoria where you can check for impressions. Or go to the OT.

Short answer: Yes, it's worth it.

Yeah, I'm really curious how you handled the two Fyoras: how much essence does that leave you with for casting spells?
Oh, and like Toma said: can you afford to give them both at least 2 intelligence so they're controllable?
(also, one of my favorite areas in the start of the game is northwest of the village)

Not much. I'm okay at the moment since I have a thorn baton with a decent amount ammo and the two fyoras do a decent amount of damage, but I'm definitely putting some points into intelligence to get my essence up the next time I level.

It's really cool. I like that you can't just spam it and that there are penalties for summoning things (like my aforementioned low essence).

I have never played dwarf fortress as I suspected it might be too complicated for me to sit down and learn. I am loving gnomoria. The interface and graphics are great and made it easy for me to learn the mechanics of the game. There are some great let's play videos on youtube also.

I must be doing something wrong, or I'm just really unlucky. I'm playing the first game as a Shaper, got to the Ruined School, and it's a bit hard to make any progress there. Whether I go with one strong summon or many weaker summons, I tend to have to go back to town to restore my essence every battle or two because my creatures died. And if I try to help my summons out with Firebolt, I'm liable to get two-shot. Feel like I kinda screwed myself not raising Fire Shaping at character creation and the first few levels. I got Battle Shaping instead. I thought Battle Shaping would help me summon things. For battling. But I don't have a Battle type creation yet.
How easy is it to have a gimped character? Do you need to be really careful with how you spend stat points or will you generally be ok?
I'm only level 5 and I feel like I already screwed my character. I put points into Vitality, which doesn't help me not die instantly, and offensive magic, and raised the wrong Shaping skill. So, yeah, be careful, or maybe I'm just dumb at this type of game.

Yeah, well. Many oldschool RPGs have a learning process regarding how characters should be skilled. I'd say if you cant play with your current setup, restart. You havent lost too much yet. On the other hand, even though I am AWESOME and feel unbeatable with my summons now, I needed to do the "Backtrack, heal creatures" thing in the beginning as well. And there are some areas which I still try to avoid for the moment.

Its all about exploring the inner workings of the games :)

Techno can probably give you guys some hints on how to level though if you want.

I was going to say that its pretty hard to screw yourself with character builds, but yeah, I guess if you put points into a specialization you don't have abilities for it could be a problem.

VandalD: the location Watchill, outside of the first town, has a Battle creation canister (and the ruined school has a Magic creation canister). I won't be spoiling anything else probably, but I don't feel bad about offering some minor tips in the early game.

Thanks, guys. I'll probably just start over. I put some points into Vit that didn't seem to help, on top of the Battle Shaping. Bandit Woods:
The servile bandits still one shot me. Hell, one time I paid them the gold and they still killed me while just passing through. Meanies.
Just have to get into an old school RPG mindset, I suppose.

The story that's being set up so far is interesting, and I'm barely into it. Can already tell there will be some interesting decisions to make.

Cool, well my character is doing fine so far, so I'm not going to worry about it too much. And Toma, you were right, the summoning system is awesome!

I love to read your impressions guys :) Better luck with your next try! Going to post my (map)progress in a bit. These games really are rather long. How long did Geneforge 1 take you the first time around Techno?

Was gonna get it for a couple dollars but after checking out your Gnomoria thread think I'll stump up 10.

Is the mystery game the next game on IndieGameStand or Spiderwebs next game? Its not very clear.
