The review outlets are the leech in this situation. With all the dev blogs, Nintendo Direct style clips and gameplay videos that instantly hit the internet, why do we need the middleman gaming outlets?

The 2k devs streaming on twitch.tv did more to sell me on XCOM than any glowing review could have.

You are being ridiculous. The value in having independent reviews is that they are independent. We need the "middlemen" because the company that is trying to sell you something is never going to give you a straight and honest opinion on their product.

Stuff like dev blogs, Nintendo Direct style clips and gameplay videos by a games marketing team exist, because publishers want to control as much of a products marketing message as possible.

Except they aren't totally independent and very rarely is a review from a big site considered on the dot or not influenced at all by publishers. I much rather get a demo/long gameplay video, and a simple "is it worth it?" answer from a few Gaffers.

At the same time, a demo or a gameplay sequence can totally be fine tuned to be shown. It might not even represent the finished product.

Which press outlet you think is independent is for you to decide - but most claims of foul play seem to stem from people that aren't willing to accept that the game they are going to buy might not be the best video game ever.

GAF hype threads are a poor indicator on a games quality, as people tend to make absurdly hyperbolic statements on forums on a games quality (good as well as bad). There's also the fact that plenty of marketing people are active on NeoGAF. I see value in having reasonable people that are able to contextualize review games - most forum users are neither reasonable nor able to reasonably indicate a games shortcomings. Extremist statements out of temporary anger are, sadly, the norm.

And let's take a look at who's definitively not independent: The person that is trying to sell you a game.

To be honest, GAF is probably the last place I'd go for a quality indicator of a game. Has its place, but there's a ton of misinformed people on both sides of any game. That, and there's hardly any middle ground found.

Quite the opposite. Most claims of foul play come from reviews giving 10's when the game is steaming hot shite. Just go read any CoD review or the infamous GTA 4 review or Skyrim PS3 reviews which were copy paste of the 360 version and told people to buy a broken game etc etc. There are endless counts of foul play when it comes to games journalism.

If they don't get a game on time yeah there might be some funny business afoot from EA, or maybe they are just running really late but none the less reviewers recommendations ain't worth shit anyway so no big loss.

Analyst Doug Creutz sees game struggling to hit 2m sales worldwide
Electronic Arts is set to ship Medal of Honor: Warfighter this week in the US, Europe and Australia (with a Japanese release slated for mid-November), but there's no denying that it'll be a tough shooter market to launch into with Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Halo 4 both looking for big sales. In fact, Cowen and Company analyst Doug Creutz said that the new Medal of Honor is "likely to be a major disappointment" and will "struggle" to reach 2 million sales across the globe.
While we believe Street expectations for MoH:W sales have moderated significantly, likely down to the 3-4MM unit range, we are concerned that those expectations may still be too high. Based on our read of pre-release tracking data, we think the game might struggle to sell through 2MM units worldwide," Creutz stated.
Creutz added, "With only a week before a murderer's row of AAA titles begins to come out (Assassin's Creed III on October 30; Halo 4 on November 6; Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 on November 13), we think MoH:W has a very short window to capture sales, and a dearth of reviews is unlikely to help. The decision to make early review copies unavailable does not suggest to us that the company has a high degree of confidence in the quality of the game."

Someone in the OT said it was to deter piracy in some way

I literally had a small stroke while reading that

Left side is numb

Day 0/1 patches aren't even worth complaining about anymore. It just means that the team kept working on the game rather than having it go gold then sitting on their hands until post-launch complaints. Also defers piracy I guess?

After having actually played the game, I now see they they'd want to keep this bucket of mud away from reviewers.

Implying that independent review sites are independent anymore, some of them might as well be owned by the publishers. Almost zero credibility left in journalism.

Bucket of delicious mud?

Delicious $60 mud.

Only in the entertainment industry are people willing to pay for garbage consistently.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Holy shit that is a rather huge list of things they've worked on in the patch. One would say this is the kind of shit they should've fixed in the final bug testing phase.

They clearly didn't have time. Launching this game later would have been a massacre.

So anyone trying to stream the game on twitch is getting the ban hammer and the channel shut. ONLY gamespot can stream till 9 am pst tommorrow! If that isn't the biggest pile crap! I swear. These companies are getting ridiculous and more stupid by the day.

Seems like one step away from taking down unauthorised screenshots.

can we see the sign of a potential bad game?
i dont see why EA would do this other than they just dont want to see people not buying the game because of bad score.

I really dont care about moh multiplayer.... But at the end... Its EA so i guess they all put the budget into the mp so they can sell you more dlc map pack.

Turns out i was right possibly

mission 2, oh man, fuck thats crazy controversial. Training to storm a 747 cockpit as a terrorist? fuuuuuuuck

FB 2 is not ready for prime time confirmed.

It would have better served EA to delay the game into spring and address every issue than try to beat the 3 top contenders(?) for GOTY at retail.

This further shows that EA care only about money and not quality.
