As far as I can remember it didn't even outsell Halo 3 even though it was included for free with a lot of Xbox bundles...
Because Halo 3 was selling for years before Reach came along. If I'm not mistaken, Halo Reach has sold more copies in the same time period. The reason why you haven't heard much is because since Halo 3, CoD has smashed Halo's sales records.

Comparison.

From July 2011, but you get the point.

I want mooooooore options .... complains about poor matchmaking because of low populations.
Options include more than matchmaking playlists.

I neeeeeeed ranks and skill based matching .... played 20 games of Arena, moved back to TS.
Played something like 300 Arena games as opposed to 3,000 Ranked games in Halo 3. Arena is a broken joke of an attempt at Ranked.

I have to have campaign scoring or I'm gone .... I just don't even know a single person that spent more than 2 seconds ever thinking about campaign scoring so who knows.

So because you don't care...

I couldn't care less about no campaign theater or scoring to be honest. Doesn't mean I will run around acting as though they are no big loss.

I don't think you understand what you are talking about.

When did we get all of these juniors?

Enlighten me, because that's seriously what I see.

Options include more than matchmaking playlists.

The options I was referring to were the only that would clearly come at the expense of the matchmaking population. You can add all of the other bells and whistles you want.

Played something like 300 Arena games as opposed to 3,000 Ranked games in Halo 3. Arena is a broken joke of an attempt at Ranked.

Short of a poor population, I've never seen a decent argument as to why it was a joke. Why was the population so poor? I'd argue because it was too exclusive to average players.

H3? Hop on, it's laughable the percentage of derankers on there. It's completely broken. I can completely see why 343 went down the route they did, even as someone who completely loved ranks.

So because you don't care...

I couldn't care less about no campaign theater or scoring to be honest. Doesn't mean I will run around acting as though they are no big loss.

I don't know a single person, or know of a single person short of the people on this forum that will give it a second look. So, yeah, hardly a big loss.

Oh my god, please shut the FUCK up about the custom game browser.

With 343i cutting features and Halo Gaf more worried about fucking campaign scoring than good match quality. I will go as far to say that I personally, am the last, best hope, for this series.

This argument doesn't account for the nearly 2x as large install base for the Xbox. Of course Reach sold faster - they had nearly 2x as many consoles available as consumers. In the end the projection stays the same - Reach is not projected to outsell Halo 3.

For all intents ans purposes this can and should be considered a failure. It was the first title AAA Halo game title not to outsell it's predecessor. You can make the argument that "it's not a numbered sequel" or "COD is so big now" etc., but it doesn't change the fact that compared to other Halo games the Reach sales figures and player base is a failure.

EDIT - lulz - you refernce and quote VG, but fail to read the full article. They clearly state that Reach won't outsell 3.

ODST Firefight is a survival mode. Reach Firefight is a shooting gallery, shoot some AI, kkthxbai!

Survival is interesting and fun, for shooting gallery i can play the campaign on easy. Or survival Firefight on easy.

Yep! The should have brought back ODST style Firefight.

Server browser doesn't equate to good match quality because the roster of players aren't matched by skill. Close competition makes for a good game experience, for me and many others, not being able to play a specific variant on a specific map over and over again.

Enlighten me, because that's seriously what I see.

 1. Skill Based Ranks work. The arena system did not. Ask any of the MLG players arguing for the return of 1-50.
 2. More options mean more customization in gametypes. We want to be able to toggle droppable flags. That does not mean we want to see two different ctf playlists. Streamlined playlists are good.
 3. Campaign scoring was fun in Halo 3. The fact that it was tied to acheivements actually helped make it fun.

I don't know if I agree with any of this.
It's not just a case of clicking the "port to Halo 4" button.
Seeing as much of the Reach tech was used when developing it, I doubt they would have major problems porting it over to their own codebase. Yes, there will be some hurdles, because of all the other new tech – but it would technically go faster as it is done already, adding the new sandbox stuff would be the area where it would get difficult. However, much of that seems to be in Spartan Ops, so I don’t see why they could not live side-by-side.

My original post was intended to take Firefight as an example, but my complaint applies to all the changes.

See children, this will happen when you don't read. You look stupid and nobody takes you seriously.

You guys aren't really taking that post seriously, are you?

Sarcasm doesn't read well on the internet but come it, it's obvious in that post...

Whilst not sarcasm, you're right in the sense that I am quite clearly taking the piss, these guys are clueless sometimes.

I'm never going to give up on a server browser, because whilst games like TF2, CSS and BF3 continue to structurally outclass Halo, there's no good reason to do so.

Competition is hardly the driving factor of Reachs failure. The only Halo games that didn't have competition where Halo:CE and Halo 2. Halo 3 fared well in the face of many blockbusters. Did CoD become more popular? Sure it did. But even when more people were playing CoD than Halo, Halo 3 was still at the top end of the user charts.

Reach? Getting routinely beaten by a yearly sports title...

Well it is the least updated halo game ever... besides Halo Wars... I personally think COD is more popular because it is in realism..not saying its super real or anything but all the guns are real and its not a super human in a suit. It's way easier too. So yeah not really possible for any game to stay on top of charts if the developer abandons the game 6-7 months before the next. Gaf thinks its the mechanics that drove people away, funny too because vanilla always has more people in it. Most of them have way more offerings...now that or most people just got tried of halo.. Now Halo 4 is adding damn near everything people wanted out.....lol

343 playing the game early so they can unlock all the cool shit and dong on us when we start.
This reminds me...
Do unlockable stuff have a minimum SR-XX rank?

"As you progress through your multiplayer career, you unlock items that allow you to build the character and experience you want. The things you really desire, such as the Battle Rifle and DMR, you’ll gain access to fairly quickly"

Does this mean certain weapons like Lightrifle might need, say, SR-20 before you can unlock it with a Spartan Point?

The bulletin noted we get every gameplay affecting thing, not counting specializations, by SR-26.

Have we actually gotten confirmation (in any form) that campaign scoring is out? I keep seeing speculation and quoting the same posts that people are fearing that it's cut.

You're assuming that the amount of FPS players has doubled since Halo 3 - which is unlikely. Yes, there are more people with Xboxes now. No, that doesn't mean that all of them want to play first person shooters, and it certainly doesn't mean that they would've bought Halo 3 if they had a console when it was released. I think the Kinect boom account for a lot of the sales (sold a lot of consoles apparently).

We can't really say much definitive without statistics, but we do know for certain that Halo Reach was outselling Halo 3 in the first 40 weeks of its release which makes it more successful. Looking at players is another argument completely (just read your comment from before)

From 343:
At each rank, you will earn one or more Spartan Points (SP). SP are used to purchase gameplay items for your personal loadouts. Once you purchase an item, it can be used in any of your loadouts.

The Spartan Point system is based around offering choice at each rank. The full suite of gameplay items is available for purchase by SR-26 but you won’t have enough SP to buy everything until SR-50. It’s up to you to decide the order in which you want to build up the arsenal for your Spartan-IV.

From 343:

Ah but it doesn't deny nor confirm restrictions for certain things before SR-XX.
COD had such restrictions, even in BLOPS despite the players buying the unlocks. I hope no restrictions, so that i can get my Lightrifle ASAP.

EDIT also, "The full suite of gameplay items is available for purchase by SR-26", i'd say this implies restrictions until SR-26...

He's as serious as you are in thinking that your one sentence scorn remarks of are going to make 343 add missing features.

It's called I hadn't refreshed the page and was still writing my reply before I saw that, jesus. You don't know how a thread works either. Not to mention the hypothetical "if".

This is such a angry, bitter thread, It's really bringing me and my hype for this game down

Why are so many of you so hypercritical. You're getting a new Halo game, try to focus on the positives.

Ranks: Played H3 Doubles. Nearly every one was against a deranker. We played 2 legit teams both ranked 45-50. I went in thinking it was going to be awesome, but it turned out to be nothing but a complete hassle. MLG players? Christ. Now that's substance.

Options: A misunderstanding. I'd have no issue w/ customization in Custom games, etc. But full on browser? To those people, get real. The last thing I'd want is something that would pull people away from matchmaking.

Campaign scoring: I haven't the slightest idea why it was removed. But to think that to even the 1% of people will care about it will not forget about it 1 week later is silly. It is hardly worth getting upset over.

It's hard to focus on the positives when there is such a significant number of negatives

Enough salt? Good show for team downer? :D

Let's take this thread back a couple OTs.

I look at that .gif and I'm reminded of the potential this game had before we learnt of all the crap 343i threw in. (Though still makes me excited a little bit)

....

All this negativity has got me down. Halo 4 looks awesome! Can't wait to play campaign and Spartan Ops! Gonna go through solo on Heroic, Legendary and then co-op on legendary! Nice work 343i!

That's better.

Here's a positive - The soundtrack is really good, I've listened to it at least 8 times now and the majority of tracks are really strong.
