Nintendo Downloads - October 2012

Did anyone get NightSky? What's the 3D like? I've been wanting to play this game for awhile now on PC but there was talk of an HD update coming so I held off. But I read a good review on Nintendo Life about it so I'm sold, I'd just like to know if the 3D is good.

Even before that Youtube XL on the browser was pretty shitty. Used it once or twice and never went back. It was terrible.

I actually never used YouTube XL extensively, it was too slow. I would always go to the main site and just watch videos there. Before Opera stopped updating the browser and YouTube went with their millionth flash update, I was able to watch entire episodes of MST3K (back then the fans broke the episodes up into ten parts each) and videos as long as 30-45min. Hence why I'm very excited Nintendo is going with HTML 5, I wish more hardware/content providers would do the same.

It's very subtle. Just like every other Nicalis game on the eShop.

I sort of wish the Opera partnership had happened this gen instead of last. They made two decent browsers with terribly low resolutions and RAM on the DS and Wii and they could have made something great on the 3DS and truly fantastic on the Wii U with all that horsepower.

Can anyone tell me what the controls are in Liberation Maiden? The 1UP review says it's analog to control and touch pad to fire?

UGH.

Oh God, this is going to play out like KevinCow vs. Segata isn't it?
The game is glitchy as hell. The fireball is glitchy, I got stuck in the ceiling twice during my last playthrough, and the enemies are pretty erratic too.

Relax, I was just surprised since all of my playthroughs were smooth and I played SML1 a lot. I guess I was just lucky.
Still, I feel that calling it ''glitchy as hell'' is a bit hyperbolic. It's not like Mario sinks into the ground every 5 minutes.

What's wrong with Liberation Maiden? The video on the shop looks pretty decent...
Here's my review and here's Santiako's review from the 3DS Game Reviews/Recommendations/Condemnations Thread.

From my review linked above:

''You use the slide pad to move, the L button to strafe (you either hold it or press it to toggle, set this in the options) and the stylus to aim and fire. You have two weapons (you get the second one in stage 2). For the first one, you move your reticule over enemies to automatically lock onto them and then lift the stylus to fire. If you keep targeting an enemy you will do a more powerful charge attack. The second one is a laser that automatically fires where your reticule is.
There's no left handed mode, BUT it might be easier to control than Kid Icarus; since the first weapons locks onto enemies, you can just kind of move your reticule over them, you don't need as much precision. If you are at least a little bit skilled with your right hand, you should give it a try.''

I know Layton will be either nigh impossible to find retail here, or it will be ~45 EUR regardless. Considering getting an NTSC 3ds though.

You can download it from Poland :) The currency value fell, and they dont update the prices to match the conversation rates :)

I have to say, this is a fantastic week. I'm very impressed! If I had the money, I'd buy pretty much everything that came out.

But alas, I have no money atm. So the games will have to wait for now. :[

eShop (in NA at least) has been really good lately and will be for the rest of the year, as far as original content goes. VC could still use a kickstart though :/

Another problem was that Opera could only do updates to the browser when Nintendo told them to which of course was few and far between. I used to be a member on the Opera forums which had its own board for the Wii browser. Whenever we griped or made requests for changes that was the line we were given. Who is doing the browser this time I wonder?

Anyways, with a full gig of RAM devoted the OS alone, every video I watch better stream like clockwork or I'm gonna flip out.

Uploaded 50 bucks to the shop this morning, am down to 25 so I gotta say Nintendo did well by me.

Played some Ghosts & Goblins and dear lord I forgot that shit be hard. Thank the lord for save states is all I can say for that. I've only really played the C64 version of this one back in the day and even that wasn't much. I played alot more Ghouls & Ghosts on the C64 or some friends Master System. Really enjoy that alot more, shame there wasn't a NES port of that.

Played a Wee bit of NightSky on the bus, but the sun shinning through the window made it hard to play at times. But from what I played I loved it, can't wait to check it out more later after work.

its more the smallest smudge on the screen looks awful, I try and wipe it away with my cleaning cloth and only makes it worse. Its alot better now with the XL then the original, but its still a pain.

Games like Nightsky dark games with 3D effect look kinda bad in direct sunlight. But something like The Denpa Men or VC games are fine for the most part.

Maybe I just need a better cloth to clean my screen with, stupid official Hori one :(

Ugh, wait? No left-handed mode? Not even the general buttons-replace-stick sort that games generally have? Well, guess I won't be purchasing that one then. Even if I could get it to work with my right hand, it'd just feel awkward and sloppy the whole time.

I'm not good with words so I'll just be brief with Liberation Maiden. The god damn game control is fucking awful. Why the fuck did they go with this control scheme? This is no Sin and Punishment or Kid Icarus, the control scheme is extremely awkward, I thought the game is supposed to be fast pace but no, it's tank control, in the sky, with no camera control, in free roaming map.

Once again, after reading gaf I wonder If I have a super power or something, I got used to the controls pretty fast. I was going to post how good the game is..
(and I'm playing on hard, and already beat 2 stages)

I'm the same, I just played it for long enough to beat the first area and I didn't have any issues with the controls. Heck felt abit better then Kid Icarus to be honest. Also as the game seems to be designed to be played in shorter bursts I don't think I'll have the wrist issues I did with KI.

Liking the game soo far, seems fun and the story seems just soo over the top thats its awesome. I have no idea whats going on, why are plants growing again?

Bought and beat Liberation Maiden while I'm waiting for VLR to arrive tomorrow :V

Overall I wouldn't recommend it as far as the value you get for $8, but it's not particularly terrible I suppose. Like some people have said though, it's short, repetitive, and the controls/camera aren't the best. I like it and it's kind of charming though, would recommend it at $4-5

On a side note, does anyone recognize Shoko's voice actress? I've heard her before but I can't place my finger on who it is.

Yeah, not being able to use the buttons to move surprised me too.

Can you SAVE in the middle of Liberation Maiden, or do I have to finish the whole thing in one sitting?

The manual doesn't mention that, nor does the menu... I just want to know if quitting loses all my progress.

Huh, I am actually really enjoying Liberation Maiden, somewhat to my surprise. After sinking dozens of hours into Kid Icarus earlier this year, I don't mind the controls in LM, though I did notice my hand starting to cramp a bit during the 3rd Stage (I wonder if the weight/size of the XL has anything to do with that though). The voice overs are good and I like the idea of "purifying" the land as a secondary objective in each level. The whole package is reminiscent of Kid Icarus, really, it just doesn't pull off any of the elements as well or with any charm or variety. Given the length and lack of variety, I think the price point is its only serious problem, but I'm happy to pay it to support the release of niche/Level-5 games outside of Japan. Looking forward to the next Guild 01 offerings!

Good grief, took long enough. YouTube stopped working on my Wii browser over a year ago, videos crash after about two minutes, it's pathetic. But who cares at this point when the Wii U comes out the week before with a browser that already supports YouTube on HTML5? Still nice to have as an option though I guess at least on 3DS.

Edit, source. All hail HTML5! Die Flash!

http://nintendoeverything.com/inter...pport-no-flash-tabs-fastest-nintendo-browser/
So it does support HTML5 video, heh? That porn curtain will get a lot of use, I see.

I got a Game Over once, and it threw me back to the title screen. When I clicked on Story Mode again, I had the option to start a New Game or Continue in the stage I lost.

The game auto-saves after each completed stage. If you quit a stage you will have to play that stage from the beginning.

Ugh. I figured this was what it would be. I love Kid Ikarus but it is so uncomfortable to play as a leftie. The only way I even cope with it is to make movement the ABXY buttons and stylus in left hand. I like the game but rarely play more than one stage at a time. It has taken me four months and I still havn't beaten it.

I could use my right hand for stylus but I just don't want to. I'm happy enough knowing that there are many other games that I can enjoy without even thinking about controls.

http://www.notenoughshaders.com/201...nces-two-brothers-for-wii-us-eshop-next-year/

- Ackkstudios are now officially Wii U developers
- Team has around 17 employees
- “Two Brothers” heading to the Wii U’s eShop
- Visuals are a homage to the Game Boy era.
- Targeted 2013 release
- more specific release info coming in 2013
- currently in the infant stages of porting the game to the Wii U
- Two Brothers is an Action/Adventure/Role playing game
- created in the style of Game Boy games
- gameplay is similar to “Secret of Mana” and “The Legend of Zelda”
- game will be HD
- general lack of color is a core element of what the game’s story is about
- take on the role of Roy Guarder, a young inventor who begins to obsess with the idea of finding a new color on earth
- this is after a near death experience shows him an after life filled with color
- your brother, Bivare, is also an inventor and explorer
- your brother also takes on your obsession and you begin a quest

They are also working on second game which is a modern 3D RPG
- platforms to be announced for second game in March
- Wii U being considered for this RPG, possibly even Wii U exclusive
- games like “Earthbound” and “The World Ends With You” have an influence on the 3D RPG
- 3D RPG is already in playable form

- They became a Wii U developer thanks to help from Emily Rogers
- It took two and a half weeks for Ackkstudios to become an official Wii U developer
- The process to become a developer was smooth.

Looks interesting. It would be cool if Nintendo has another solid 3rd party developer doing great/good work on Nintendo platforms like Renegade Kid and Shin'en Studios.

Been watching some of the videos on the Eshop but having a little problem with some of the Nintendo direct vids and some of the Nintendo TVs basically any videos with an 18 rating don't play, just comes up with a message saying times during which they can be viewed are restricted, is this down to Nintendo? If so what time can they be viewed surely 11 at night would be fine or have I fucked up some parental control thing somewhere? I really can't see anything though

Anyone got any ideas?

EDIT - never mind working now, so I guess that means only after 11pm that's a bit ridiculous

Isn't it funny that Two Brothers looks so much like a Game Boy game and yet it won't be playable on GB's distant successor?

On another note, I bought Shinobi for Game Gear and was amazed by all the emulation options; changing game resolution on the fly, button remapping, rapid fire, original performance or full speed, optional blur (to emulate the original look?) and even different border colors when playing in 1:1 mode. Nintendo's emulation seems so lacking in comparison...

Yeah the blur option was really neat. It's worth owning just to see the emulation in action. I am so ashamed to admit I used savestates in the final dungeon: a 12 hour game turned into a 30 minute game...

Yea, I have to wonder if all of that effort is partly to blame for them not getting more than 3 GG games on VC in 1.5 years.

Did we even get Columns yet? Lol.

I'm guessing it probably has more to do with the other ones selling badly and/or Sega being strapped for cash, which is a shame because it's gonna take forever for them to get to the few good GG games like Master of Darkness, Shining Force, etc.

I just want Wonder Boy the Dragons Trap from the GG, if Sega bring that out I'll never complain the lack of content from them on the VC

I also wouldn't mind seeing the Phantasy Star Games and Luna that only came out in Japan translated for the system like what was done for Monster World IV but that may be too much to ask for. Also Gunstar.

I would assume with the new ESRB rating process for downloadable games (ie: making them free/cheap), we're going to see A LOT more Virtual Console games that we might not have seen before. The cost of getting individual ratings (because it was not cost effective) probably held back a lot of games from getting out there.

Taking that cost away removes a BIG hurdle for the future of Virtual Console. Hopefully.

I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed more here, or I missed it, or the indie developers cheering about it on my Twitter feed had bad information (though I saw it mentioned half a dozen times last week, so).

Tried Night Sky for a few moments and I'd recommend it at this point. It looks nice, has a great atmosphere, pleasing sounds, and runs pretty darn smooth too. The 3D could be more pronounced, but as of now, this is about the only fault I could come up with out of the 10 minutes I've spent with it. 3D is along the lines of NSMB 2 as far as depth goes, which is too bad. Other than that, so far so good.

$10 purchase, so far justified.

Isn't the ESRB fee only like $800 though? That's like pocket change to companies like Sega.

Yeah, the short-form submission fee is chump change relative to all the other costs involved. It'll help tiny indie outfits release digital games on platforms that require ESRB ratings, sure, but the likes of Capcom, Konami, etc aren't suddenly gonna open the floodgates now that they no longer have to pay a three-figure sum for an age rating.

The VC is dead because the customer base has dried up and most of the big eligible releases that might plausibly show up on the VC are already out.
