Kinda weird hearing so many people drop the "I'm not a journalist" thing all of a sudden. Like some how that protects them from being called out on this shit.

Yup. You write reviews and cover games, then no matter what you call yourself, you are part of the system, which is F'ed up. *Edit* I'm not accusing giant bomb of anything. But them not talking about the subject for that reason is not good enough.

I have a feeling they'd say something like "we'd rather talk about games than gaming journalism". Aren't they friends with Keighley? He should really be the one being put under the microscope for that nonsense.

I'm pretty sure they discussed the topic of game writing/reporting before, did they not?

I'm an expert

Formerly worldrevolution. The only reason I am nice to anyone else is to avoid being banned.
People always said that.

I wouldn't argue it with people like the guys from GB, I think it's quite clear what their intentions are in this industry. Except for Patrick, I'm pretty sure he comes into every place he goes trying to be a journalist. I'm honestly not sure why GB makes him review games. But looking at comments from that other thread where people are like "I'm not a journalist!!" and then you find them referencing themselves as "journalists" 100x..it's just funny.

And honestly, the moniker of journalist doesn't matter, it's more about being responsible with what you say, taking the time to make sure what you're saying matches with what you're doing, and taking the time to divide your personal and professional lifestyles.

The crux of this story was, a young woman didn't see the difference between her personal thoughts being on a public forum and her professional thoughts being on a public forum, so the things she wrote on a professional level made her look like a hypocrite and undermined her integrity. Rather than writing an explanation or apology or rebuttal like she should have, she made her twitter private and filed a libel suit against eurogamer. The Keighley stuff is interesting and sort of sad, especially after today's G4 news, but it's nothing new and nothing that...well...G4 hasn't been doing for YEARS. Sometimes you just need a sponsorship, it can often be quite difficult to financially justify a lot of what goes on in "games journalism".

TL:DR, be more honest with yourselves. It keeps you from second guessing what one of your personas said somewhere you can't remember and keeps your creditably on the up and up.

They've talked about this specifically on the podcast a long time ago. Paraphrasing here, 'people like us aren't journalists, we're trade press. Like the guys who write about cars for car magazines.'

That's true, there is very little games journalism, they're enthusiast press. There are some decent examples of journalism, like David Ellis' expose on the PSP Go for example.

I just started using Giant Bomb this week. It's pretty funny.

Worth Reading is up, talking about the "Scandal"

I take games deathly seriously, probably too much! You don’t have to. That’s okay. I don't shy away from the journalism moniker, in the hopes it will inspire me to have higher standards for my own work. I want other people to hold me to that standard, too, even if it means constantly being reminded of my own failures. It gives me something to aspire towards, a marker that I can look back on and say “yes, I’ve made progress” or “no, I’ve been lazy.”

Klepick has journalistic standards! One of the few, unfortunately.

Cross posting from another thread:
Good write-up from GB. At least they addressed the news, and made their stance clear. See the thing GB does, that no other website does is that it's about the personalities. After some time following the site, you begin to understand how they think. I know I said they need to address this news one way or another, because it IS news and a big one. But in reality I knew that I personally didn't need it, because even though I live half way across the planet from them, I feel like I know them and I can trust them. Something I can't say about any other website, really. Especially not after them not talking about this news.

I love how people seem to care about the ethics of gaming journalism when political journalism makes game's writers all look like mensa members all worthy of the nobel piece prize.

It's possible to care about both (and more!)

It's just that throwing around the word "journalism" as if it's some great thing to aspire to is a joke. Today's journalism makes that like aspiring to be a homeless guy who doesn't poop on the train...that much.

It’s the beautify of Twitter’s intimate immediacy, and the level of interaction we have on Giant Bomb. You know what we’re thinking. Ask tough questions, and hopefully a bunch of really dumb ones, then make your own judgement.

Glad Patrick is asking all the tough questions when he once again can't even edit his own article properly.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but they need to fix their video tagging/sections. Some TNTs are listed in subscriber and some in features, some Spookin' with Scoops are in multiple locations as well. None of the TNTs have the games they played in the title, making searching for a particular impossible. There are more TNTs than TANG, but TANG gets its own section. Finding old JAR episodes is a pain as well since they are listed in subscriber feed.

Jar needs its own section.
TNTs need their own section with the title of the games retroactively added to each TNT title.
Breaking Brad needs its own section, including the Running of the Lanterns.
Load Our Last Save needs its own section.
Random PC Game needs its own section.
Mailbag needs its own section.
I Love Mondays needs its own section.
And then, maybe they can have a misc subscriber section (what it is now) where the Sim Golf, Pokemon Snap, and other random Friday shows can live.

The searching on the site is awful, they don't tag/label titles properly, and the content isn't consistently in the correct locations.

Also, brad sucks
I just threw that in since brad responds only to negative stuff

Been the pain of my life for the last few months as I've been downloading every GB video on the site. Considering Dave is so anal about the design of the site it boggles my mind the video section is a ridiculous mess.

Also, that picture of Ryan on the podcast is hilarious.

They need an intern or someone to organise all the boring shit like this and the YT channel.

Is Patrick building a gaming PC on the Octoberkast or is he just getting advice?

Also, I'm sure for that SkyLanders focus test, they presented the kids with an assortment of ways to exploit them and they just chose the least offensive.
