Live in Sayreville, NJ. Cable went out around 6:00, power went out at 8:00. Still windy as all hell here. Just watching some movies on the iPad with the wife.

My mom works in Coney Island, she drove early in the morning. She's a director at a nursing home. She's fine, fortunately.

But her entire parking lot was submerged 6+ feet under water. Her 2012 Volvo is a total loss, as are all the other cars on that lot. The facility is located right on the water, so the tides had no problem reaching the car.

Why didn't you or someone give her a ride? There was a 100% chance that whole lot was going to be toast car wise.

Philly area here. Haven't lost power yet, but the wind is getting pretty scary--it's to the point where it's shaking my house. Irene was quite a bit worse with rain for me, but these winds are unreal. I really hope I don't wake up to some kind of disaster...

Good luck to all those in worse places than I am. Some of those pictures make me very grateful we didn't get it worse here.

EDIT: forgot to mention, cable has been out for a few hours now. Phone 4G/LTE is really slow right now too.

PG Co., MD checking in. Light rain at the moment, winds not too crazy but there's some nice gusts. Power still on and I have no idea how tbh. You can always expect bad things when it comes to Pepco.

Any guesstimations at what time this will start dying down around here?

Lights flickered, once a couple minutes ago, one very noticeable flicker just now. Upper Manhattan/Washington Heights

Might turn off the PC.

F.Edit: Two flickers as I wrote this, one after the other.

They stranded this poor chap in the middle of a flooded street that's being hit by heavy winds, and told him to report live from there. He's rocking and waving all over.
Almost knocked over by some swirling winds lol.

I'm morbidly waiting for a kraken to emerge from the water to pull him in. Then Cooper says, "Stay safe Ali"

Any good photo collections out yet? CNN has an underwhelming one but I'd like to show my students some pictures of whats going on.

PG County seems pretty neglected, in a lot of ways. However, I think Pepco is doing a great job so far. The numbers have been rising, and then you'll see the outages cut from 17k to 8k. I assume they've been re-routing power to try and get people back in service. Given how strong the winds have been, the outage numbers aren't that bad.

That said, we'll see how it looks tomorrow, and what their restoration estimates are.

The wall behind me was shaking but that was about it, I had to cover where my AC unit because air was getting in under it.

I live in Woodhaven, Queens and there was a power line that caught fire a few blocks away.

CNN once again proving itself to be one of the stupidest and most sensationalist forces in news. Do they really need to put a guy out there in a dangerous situation to report on this? If anyone else was out there they'd be getting a ton of shit for potentially endangering and/or wasting the time of first responders who'd have to deal with them if they got swept away but since he's got a microphone in his hand I guess it's all good.

not bad at all. it only one area that was considered flood prone.
Good. We'll probably call her tomorrow and see what's up.

My dad is flipping between the football game and the Weather Channel. Seeing Brian Norcross talk about hurricanes gives me a level of comfort that things will be okay. South Florida-GAF would understand.

Going to be late on this but seriously, think about what you are saying or just keep your idiotic selfish comments to yourself.

When my hometown got hit by the storms and I lost power earlier this summer, I felt cheated and angry and alone. I was in a very small city in a very small state and no one cared. It's one of the reasons I have absolutely hated this year.

Now the biggest city in the country is being pummeled by the biggest storm by many measures. The surrounding areas are getting destroyed. There are reports in this thread over and over about tragic situations.

And you're complaining the the roller coaster ride isn't fun enough, or the jokes weren't funny enough.

Learn to listen and think about what you say for the good of everyone.
Err I didn't mean it should have been stronger or more folks should've been effected. I'm glad I was not hit hard.

Let me rephrase "Anyone else not get hit by this storm hard?"

It was not a complain, what a ridiculous statement.

I'm around Philly too and the wind is getting bad. I live in apartment building where I can NEVER hear what's happening outside, but the wind is actually getting loud.

All the channels have people in stupid dangerous spots.
