1) I hope this means they take a lot of control from Lucas. I'm crossing my fingers so hard I think I just broke them.
2) If it's anything like I-II-III I'm not seeing them. I don't want Lucas to kill my imagination, because what little imagination I have I'm sure it's still better than what he would achieve.

He gave it up before he died? Can only get better from here.

Or worse, but at least that would be comical instead of depressing.

Yes and there was once a Toxic Avengers cartoon.

A Toxic Avenger movie today could not lead to a Toxic Avenger kids' cartoon, unless the movie was the equivalent of the cartoon. Hence my point.

Times have changed.

And this is Star Wars, the franchise has remained massive since creation. Merchandising was never an issue, that's my point. You can make everyone happy.

Yeah, if to you Harry Potter is not pandering to children.

What is Ep 1 2 3?

Harry potter is an "all ages" film, as i expect this would be. How could it not be? it's source material are young adult novels.

Star wars is a different animal, and disney is likely aware of this, having taken a long hard look at merchandise sales.

Say what you will about Cameron, but he'd be the perfect fit for the Original trilogy-style Star Wars. I mean, he entered the film industry after he had seen it in 1977. It's certainly one of his biggest influences and it's pretty obvious Avatar was his attempt to create a similar type of legacy.

No he wouldn't be, lol. Cameron can't write characters like those from the original trilogy (neither can Lucas, he he he..).

There should be an official GAF thread of people we want to stay the fuck away from this project.

I'll start it with James Cameron...

Or, they could just make the best film they could given the source material, as they did with Iron man and Avengers.

Just because it's disney doesn't mean it's going to be 100% "for the kids." Disney has been REALLY hands off with Marvel Studios and it's paid dividends to do so.

good entertaining movies, but not great.

would you want gone with the wind 2? or ben hur 2? Lawrence of Arabia 2?

So I would pretty much die if they released an actual movie of this:

Dash Render on the big screen..... making my dream come true... what year did that come out on N64? best. game. ever.

they're summer popcorn movies, as star wars is.

They're not aiming to make gone with the wind or ben hur out of these, they're looking to put as many butts in seats as possible, and then get them to all buy merchandise.

in that sense, Iron man (2), Avengers, and to a lesser extent Cap and Thor were wildly successful.

1996.

You should go back and play it sometime....... It's pretty aged and hard to appreciate now.

Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan, Gore Verbinski, The Wachowskis, Michael Bay, Roland Emmerich, Bryan Singer, Brett Ratner...that's enough for starters.

James Cameron is busy with his own epic sci-fi saga with Avatar, so I don't know why people talk if he can even do Star Wars. He has full control over the former to boot.

I don't agree with shuffling directors at all. I'm personally glad that George Lucas will still have input, otherwise I would be worried.

People need to understand that the characters, the style, the universe won't be drastically changing, its very much established, they aren't going to come in and suddenly make things very different and changed.
Talk of keeping Star Wars consistent is kind if ironic considering how Lucas hasn't been able to stop himself from monkeying around with the original trilogy. He's erased at least two original actors (Anakin and the voice of Boba Fett). He's destroyed some of the series' finest scenes with inane additions like Darth Vader's "No...nooo!" in the Blu-ray version of the ROTJ finale. Since Star Wars Special Edition, he's shown no respect for his own material, except when it comes to jealously guarding it from the creative input of other people. He has no ear for dialogue, no sense for a balanced story, and no grasp of what made the original trilogy so good. All of which is illustrated by the prequel trilogy.

Maybe Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm will mark a change in the downward trajectory of the franchise. New movies with less input from Lucas could be exactly what Star Wars needs to regain its original height.

Singer? This is the dude that directed Xmen AND X2, and wrote "First class."

star wars would be EXTREMELY lucky if it turned out as good as those last two.

I hate that distinction so much. I know you're talking in terms of money and stuff, but Star Wars is just a good film—period. We shouldn't have to say "it's good for a [big-budget genre here] film." No reason why we shouldn't be able to put Star Wars and Gone With the Wind (the two best selling films of all time anyways) against one another. The summer blockbuster did not exist before Star Wars and Jaws; Lucas and Spielberg just went out to make a good films; that's exactly how this should be approached.

Disagree with the bolded, but other than that, you're off to a good start.

I'm okay with this.

Disney has a pretty good record lately of not screwing up their established tentpole franchises. So this should be better than the prequel trilogy anyway.

And as much as the prequel trilogy and Indy 4 were disappointing, Lucas still had some cool action sequences and some good ideas that just needed to be improved upon. I'm sure there's things to build upon there.

The big questions are who writes, who directs, and how far after ROTJ it's set. I would hope they go off in a more original direction to some extent.
