Mega Man & Bass
Mega Man & Bass is, essentially, a far superior version of Mega Man 8. It presents similar graphics (especially impressive since this is an SNES title), two familiar Robot Masters, and many of the same enemies. But while Mega Man 8 suffered from atrocious level design decisions, lame as hell Robot Masters and slow gameplay that made Mega Man 7 feel like Sonic in comparison, Mega Man & Bass fixes all of this for one of the most satisfying Mega Man experiences around. The music is still a dud, as it had been for years up to that point in the Classic series, but the level design is both brilliant and wonderfully balanced to suit the play styles of both Mega Man and Bass.
Its balance is fairly obvious when played as sometimes youll come across a level clearly designed with Bass in mind. This is countered by Basss extremely weak and unwieldy regular attack, making it an enormous pain against bosses when only using the buster. Mega Man has trouble with stages because of the lack of double jump, but his charge shot and slide make fights again Robot Masters much easier, along with the much more useful slide mechanic. Unfortunately, it comes as a major downside, as early goings of the game can be near the levels of blind Mega Man 1 runs in terms of difficulty. But as with any decent Mega Man, once you learn its mechanics and run through each level a couple of times, it becomes a blast. Beginner Mega Man players keep in mind that Mega Man & Bass, when played through for the first time, is the most brutal in the entire series. Inafune stated he wanted Mega Man & Bass to be a Mega Man for the younger generation, but apparently hes lying as the game is absolutely unrelenting in its difficulty. While its fun for a Mega Man fan, casuals will find themselves throwing their controllers in frustrations, and even veteran Mega Man fans should tread cautiously.
Mega Man & Bass is not the best of the series, but its certainly one of the most memorable. With mostly brilliant level design and a wonderfully cheesy and difficult cast of Robot Masters and levels, Mega Man & Bass is both challenging and a whole ton of fun. Its a shame that this was never released in the US for the SNES, but for those willing to play a slightly inferior version, the GBA version is also mostly excellent. Hopefully any future Mega Man compilations will contain the superior SNES version in all its fantastic glory.
