New ONM Reviews - WiiU launch issue

Yeah, the demo definetly turned me off. Not surprised it scored low. Good to see EM2 on Wii U get an 80, though.

Same and same. I was really excited for it, too -- I love the art style and everything. But outside of the rather dull platforming (sooo slowwww) and how painting and using thinner always felt tacked on and clunky, the whole mess of the castle or whatever slowly opening up and characters requesting fetch quests that involved going to the next room to watch two boring characters chat about ??? to get a comb or whatever for the person just killed me. It was so boring.

what they said about ZombiU?

With ZombiU, they love the fact that it is truly a survival horror game, and a legitimately scary one as well. The attention to detail is apparently fantastic as well, they use the example of the ingame depiction of London Underground stations, featuring status boards, announcements, turnstyles, the round help buttons, etc. They also see the gamepad as being used excellently, for example as a scanner, inventory, controlling security cameras, etc. They have a few minor issues and glitches with the gameplay, but nothing too major. They also wished it had online play and Miiverse functionality. Overall, they claim that it is 'the game you'll be switching on to illustrate why the WiiU is so great'.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Red Steel has about as much to do with ZombiU as it does Watch_Dogs.

They've expressed regret about the former in the podcast and were weary about ZombiU because of it.
From what I've played Zombi U is no Red Stell, but whether it is a decent or a great game still remains unanswered. I wouldn't trust a Nintendo mag reviewing FPSs.

How many reviewers do you think will still be there from six years ago.

The Red Steel reviewer is sort of. He's actually at Nintendo Gamer but writes reviews for ONM's mag.
NGamer's Red Steel reviewer (90%) also writes for them now.
I don't know who reviewed ZombiU though.

I'm seriously surprised as to how well reviewed Nintendoland has been thus far.

Are they reviewing it based as it being a pack in or as an actual retail game?
It doesn't seem bad or anything just a bit off for that kind of praise. Well can't really knock it till I play it so we'll see.

To cut a long story short with Nintendoland, ONM believe it is almost universally fantastic for multiplayer but have mixed views regarding single player; ranging from Octopus Dance which they see as pretty mediocre, to DK Crash Course, which they loved. While they don't officially say whether they are treating it as a pack in or retail game, it is strongly implied that it is the latter.

Chandra Nair reviewed ZombiU; he didn't do Red Steel, but I've got a feeling he did their infamous My Sims review though

If Zombie U gets a glowing critical reception overall, I might just have to change my plans and camp out for a Wii U.

They should have made it so you can only traverse the underground using Oyster cards that you've pillaged from the Zombi horde.

Hoping to hear more positive stuff from this game!

Don't really trust ONM (canceled my subscription some time ago) some very suspect reviews over the years. Red Steel and Wii Play being the prime examples

For TTT2, they justify the score on the grounds that it is a great game in its own right, they very enjoyed the WiiU only extras (Tekken ball, Nintendo costumes, etc). They also love the sheer amount and variety of characters (59 in total). ONM sees it as 'the perfect example of what we expect from multi-format WiiU games, with everything seen in other versions and more Nintendo-only stuff on top' and 'makes some other developers' launch efforts look half-hearted'. The only negative I can find is that they wish it had what they consider a proper story mode.

As for FIFA, it's implied that the review score is justified because of the upgrade from the Wii FIFA game to that on the WiiU, claiming that it is 'infinitely better than any other version released on a Nintendo system'. For example the Impact Engine and its effects of physics, greater ball control, etc. The use of 'scarily realistic 'proper' players' is applauded, instead of the 'cartoony models of old'. They also believe that while it isn't for everyone, they like the use of the gamepad. Their main problem with the game is that it is based of the PS3/360 version of FIFA 12, meaning it contains '15 month-old gameplay', however they think this is defendable due the WiiU being so new.

Nice one, thank you.

Will probably pass on FIFA 13. The GamePad functionality has huge potential but the missing features will probably be too jarring, having already played the PS3 version.

Definitely think I'm more interested in Tekken though. Sounds pretty damn good.

Do people want Zombi U to be a bad game, with poor reviews?

I don't understand the sentiment.

Speaking for myself, I am wary because it's an FPS exclusive on a Nintendo platform and not done by Nintendo.

Everything about it sounds well thought out and very good, hoping it's not too good to be true as there is a lot of stake with this title.

It's by far the Wii U's most important launch game in my eyes.

Yeah, Rare struck gold on a Nintendo system but a gory killer app exclusive to Nintendo's most powerful system ever???

This could be huge and a bigtime franchise.

Glad about the ZombiU score. The way they talked about it on the podcast it always seemed like it would get a high score.

Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion (3DS) - 60

That's disappointing. However after playing the demo I still plan on getting the game. Enjoyed this style of play. Perhaps nostalgia is at play having grown up with this style of platformer but I had fun.

Do you have any specific reasons to expect a big backlash, or are you just hopeful?

I want ZombiU to be a great game, but I'm going in with tempered expectations. I'm currently of the opinion that it'll be a launch title, not unlike red steel, that's simply overlooked as we move forward next generation. I applaud Ubisoft for being at the forefront for many console launches over the years, but historically nothing they've doled out leads me to believe that this will be anything deserving of it's initial hype. I'd love to be proven though when I get a chance to play it.

It's an exclusive. This happens to most exclusives that look promising.

Some people are actually really burned out on Zombies.

Me on the other hand passed on NSMB for ZombiU & these reviews makes me think I made a good decision.

1 more day !!!

It's a Ubisoft exclusive launching on a new Nintendo console, being showcased as the premier third party game to show off their new controller. Sounds like a reason to be aprehensive to me. I think ZombiU might be great, but I'll do the smart thing and wait for more reviews

Nooo, I want a new good one :(

I have it, is a piece shit. Theres a stupid ALL things limitation (3 track layed rides per park, 8 flat rides... there even a limit for putting fucking decorations) that breaks the whole game. could have been passable and fun game without that limitation. The best thing of all, you have a big zone to build your park, and its impossible to fill more than 1 quater of it, im not shitting you, the limitation is that bad.
Im a BIG fan of the whole saga (yes, even RCT3 that in my opinion is the best park builder simulator ever created, where you can make your dreams come true, the older ones have much better campaigns and play better though), its the games I have most played in my life, countless of hours, im also a real theme parks nerd, so well its a game were my hobby comes true...

...and this game is horrible. And Im sad.

The ONM Verdict

[ZombiU] is one of the most enjoyable, action-packed and immersive games available on the Wii , and after a while the controls rarely enter your mind, except when you're amazed at how well they work.

While one of the Wii 's purposes is to attract non-gamers, [ZombiU] was clearly designed with the hardcore gamer in mind. It's slick, addictive and as close to 'cool' as a game can get.

Red Steel lol
