The NeoGAF 1 year challenge: stop buying games*

Spec Ops on GMG is kinda killin' me. Good thing they ran out of keys lol

I'll help: it's not as good as people say. The gameplay is mediocre at best, and the story, while interesting for a video game, is not particularly deep or engaging.

Huh, interesting.

I'm trying to make a list of games that would shine under thorough analysis and after hearing that a guy's writing a whole book about this game, I thought I may have to take a look at it.

I can agree with this. I played Spec Ops during the Amazon's summer sale. The gameplay is eh, and the story is all right for a game. It does stuff that is seldom seen in this medium. Spec Ops probably won't reach my top ten list for GOTY.

did you notice
that you always went downward in the game?
It is not a shallow game (no pun intended), it is a pretty cool story, not just for a videogame. But yeah, the gameplay is meh.

Well, my pre-order of PSABR came in yesterday, so now this challenge really begins for me.

I've worked out a plan of what I want to tackle. First, I'm playing through Goldeneye on N64(halfway through it). Then I'm going to play through the Bond games I have on GameCube (Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, From Russia With Love). I'll finish up with Goldeneye for the Wii, and from there, start beating Wii games.

Interesting question: what if we don't pay any money at all for a game? Like, someone buys you a gift or you had a GameStop gift card?

You should have to play it immediately. It's like a hurdle.

I'm still yet to start my challenge (1st December as promised), but I wanted to let you all know that the three games I had ordered, I've now cancelled one, so it's down to two! I have been working hard on clearing some games from my backlog though.

Well just finished Lollipop Chainsaw and am about to finish 999 so I am making some progress on the backlog.
Will use the escape clause to get Persona 4 since I am way too hyped for that, hopefully this will be the only time.

It's begun.

I've already bought all the DLC for my go-to games when I'm not playing LoL: X-COM and PAYDAY: The Heist.

I'll see about gifts, now.

edit: those don't count (lol) since I'm playing X-COM and I've been meaning to find an excuse to go back to PAYDAY.

Still haven't bought anything and not feeling the urge.

We'll see in March with the good Wii U and 3ds games coming...

Goddamnit the Steam Autumn Sale just started.

I think the only thing that can save me is not opening up Steam. I am weak.

If any Steam users claim they're on the wagon after twelve months, they're a lying low-life.
Well, excuuuuuuuse me princess!

lol this should be called "Lying to ourselves |OT|"

edit: I'll use this to make a short update:

Bought: X-COM cosmetic DLC, Wolf Pack and Soundtrack for Payday
Playing: mostly LoL, but also X-COM in the in-betweens and just downloaded and completed the last Walking Dead episode. Was doing my 1941904 attempt at starting Neverwinter Nights 2 but it always ends up boring me, Obsidian fangirl and all, so I've barely given it a couple hours. I hate the idea of going for Mask of the Betrayer without playing the base game first but seems like that may be the case. Will probably start Payday, if only to get back into it and to justify buying the DLC.

edit2: oh I also beat the Blops2 campaign. lulz

Progress update:

New games playing:
Shift Extended (Minis)
Xenogears (PSP Japanese version, backlog game)

Games completed:
Dead or Alive Dimensions (3ds, kinda? Story mode, tag challenge mode complete. survival mode, mastering characters and collecting figures left. Will keep playing the game whenever I feel like it here and there)

Games bought:
Jet Set Radio (Vita)

Things are starting to get tempting :( Sine Mora on the Vita wasn't on my radar before yesterday and the demo seemed pretty good. There is a new halfbrick game released on Minis yesterday that looked good too. I've been meaning to pick up Virtua Fighter 5 on PSN for a while along with Sega Bass Fishing. Tomba 2 is on PSN store, normally I'd snatch such gem PS1 games straight without thinking about it. Actually, I already own the game on PS1 but would rather play it on the PSP. So, I guess I wouldn't consider this a new backlog game when I already own it. Wouldn't you agree?

I'm going to remain strong about those new temptations, but I'll need to set a new rule for myself when it comes to buying games that you already own. When you're just buying them because you prefer playing them on a different platform, then I wouldn't consider that a backlog game because it's not a new game added that takes more of your time. PS1 games on PSN fall under this, other classic games released on other systems fall under this too. What do you guys think?

I agree

I bought JSR on Vita and already owned on PS3. Basically bought to support dev efforts, not to mention it turned out to be the definitive version of the game!
Was planning on potentially buying PSX titles I've already owned/beaten in the past for my Vita, merely to build my collection.

...A slippery slope this is (^___^)

That being said, still working on:

Console: AssCreedBro

Handheld: P4 and Resistance:BS ...when they actually arrive of course

Played and finished GTA: The Lost and the Damned this week!

I'll post an update.

I finished Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (I had it pre-ordered for PC) and I'm currently working on Super Mario Galaxy 2. After I 100% SMG2, I'm going to try to 100% Dragon Quest IX.

I can make it!

If any Steam users claim they're on the wagon after twelve months, they're a lying low-life.

I'll accept this as part of my challenge despite my "rules" being a bit different than the rest. Mine was to clear my physical collection from ~750 games to under 200 before I can buy anymore. It came with the exception that digital purchases are okay since I'm more concerned with removing the clutter in my life.

But sure, no more Steam purchases for a year. I'll wage my account on it. I have around 160 Steam games I believe but I can always verify things by showing account activity or something if anyone really cares to check up on things. I don't post on here often enough to have a presence that anyone would likely care anyhow.

I'm still allowing myself XBLA, PSN, and stuff like that.

Also, Forza Horizon on Microsoft's sale was super tempting, but nope. Won't do it.

Since this started I've beaten Asura's Wrath (excluding the ending DLC) and Theatrhythm (well, got the credits to roll. Loads more can be done following that). Absolutely loved the former and had a very difficult time putting it down and went back to get more achievements already. The latter is alright. Bought it for the music and feel cheated by "over 70 songs" listed on the back when 26 of those are the opening and ending songs with minimal activity involved.

Oh, and beat Lego Star Wars Complete Whatever with my girlfriend. And nearly done with Lego Harry Potter Years 5-7. I'm sure we'll continue to plow throw my co-op games to help get through my collection.

Hm... What does spending money on a F2P game count as?

Been wasting time in Halo 4 and Pokemon instead of actually attacking my backlog. I don't understand myself. :(

If you're enjoying that, there's no problem. Games are meant for fun anyways!

I'm failing so far, already bought PS All Stars (not sure how to count that as a 'completion') and Ratchet Collection this week. I'm still working through Kid Icarus though.

Oh shit, I just cancelled my ToR subscription to prepare myself to tackle my backlog, and I almost ordered Dream Drop Distance from Amazon. I actually ordered it, but I cancelled it before Amazon shipped it. This is becoming super dangerous for me.

I need to restrict myself to only Steam purchases, since I have $50 credit on my account. I must resist actually buying games outside Steam.

I only bought ACIII and Fifa 13 this year and I´m not going to buy more games, so it wouldn´t be a big deal for me.

Anyway the next year is the year of GTA V, so I´m sorry guys, I´m going to buy this game yes or yes, that's not negotiable, and if the next Xbox is launched next year I´d be in.

But at this point of the current gen, there is no many games I want to buy, that´s true.

You realized there is an escape clause regarding if you buy a game, you play it immediately and not toss it into your backlog. Hell, I believe Ledsen is using that clause for GTA V.

RAGE is awesome. But zkylon... you better play it right away!!! It'll be the same price EVERY god damned sale, so no reason to fail because of it.

RAGE was decent, nothing to really write home about. But, I dislike FPSes in general, so my opinion on the topic is a little skewed.

YOU SNAPPED ON RAGE?! PICK A BETTER GAME IF YOU PLAN TO FALTER ON YOUR CONVICTIONS!
Well, it's sitting in the cart, not bought just yet.

I'm looking for a short shooter that I can play more than once that can take some of the load from the big games I'm playing ATM. It's gonna be either RAGE, Binary Domain or Spec Ops, I think, and I guess I'll just go for BD. I dunno!!!

Also thanks, I appreciate every time someone manages to get my username spelled correctly.

I'd say Binary Domain is a better game than RAGE, although RAGE looks better and is great as a classic FPS. BD also has a surprisingly fun story, while RAGE... doesn't really have a story (not that it matters in that game).

I'm actually using the escape clause as early as next week for Far Cry 3 -_-'
Might still sell my key, but so far I'm getting really excited for that game. Other than that, yeah I'll definitely get GTAV.

Fantastic choice if you plan to play it as soon as you buy it. Binary Domain is in my top ten for GOTY. I'm a little jelly that you'll be playing it on the PC; I had to play it on the PS3...

May I have a cookie?
Still alive and well. Making progress on BulletStorm, Jet Set Radio HD and The Last Story, but haven't finished any of them yet. Hoping to finish at least two before the Steam Autumn Sale is over, so I can purchase a game I've had my eye on.

Will update my original list as soon as I have something to report.

Hmm, well, I'll lay off RAGE for now then. For some reason I had no problems insta buying The Darkness II for 15 bucks but RAGE is never at the price I want it to be, no matter how low.

Starcraft 2 for 20 bucks is also tempting but Blizzard decided to lock my account, and now I've lost access to my good 'ol Diablo 2, so fuck 'em.

Just to clarify, there's an escape clause. You can buy new games if you play them immediately upon purchase.
People actually buy games to not play them immediately? I mean aside from a crazy sell why would anyone buy a brand new game and not play it?

That is just madness to me.

We are weak to Amazon's sale and Steam's Sale. We buy too much shit. :-(

This is PC gaming, crazy sales is the name of the game. We're consumerist idiots.

If you can't afford it don't buy more but there are new games that are cheap or even free to play (like Planetside 2) that I'm not going to pass up just because I haven't finished the other 200 games I already own. I get more marginal enjoyment sampling different games. If that means I can never finish Starcraft 2 before the expansion comes out then whatever. If you give up on the idea that games need to be finished then the only problem is spending too much money which you can solve by not getting sucked into day 1 (except for multiplayer where it matters) and buying on sales. I like to finish games sometimes but it could be 3 years after I got it. I don't need to force myself to play it now just because I own it.

edit: ok, there is one instance where I do think it's smart to hold back and that's when it starts to resemble hoarding behavior. Like if you buy on sale just because you think you might play it some day. Or feel you need to play just because you bought it. Hoarders also want to believe there is value in the things they are collecting so in a way forcing yourself to play the back log is also reinforcing that behavior unless you are going to throw some of those games out that you really don't want to play but feel like you need to just because you bought it

I've already been restricting the number of full price games which I'll allow myself to buy every year. Two years ago I restricted myself to 3 full-priced games (all else must be under $30), last year was 1 (with all else being under $20), and this year I haven't had any desire to pay full-price for anything.

The idea of not buying any new games at all is appealing, I still want to support indie devs and buying things like the Humble Bundles.

Plus no new games means I would just end up buying a thousand Dota keys.

I don't think the idea is to actually beat the game, just extract all the juice you need from it so you don't just buy games and pile them up endlessly, like it has happened to a lot of us with our Steam libraries. I have like 52% played games, out of maybe 200, which is pretty shameful.

Oh yes, Far Cry 3 pre-ordered, bearly touched Hitman yet, same with XCOM and I'm halfway through Dishonored and like 1/3rd through Halo 4. Greenmangaming is the source of my addiction.
