Hotline Miami |OT| - All your LSD are belong to us. You are already dead

The 'Miami' track Jasper Byrne did is simply awesome.
Every single time the bass kicks in I feel like a badass looking at my score.

It's a topdown, 2D action game, with one simple goal: kill everyone. You can use your bear hands, your legs, or various melee weapons, or guns - the choice is yours. Although the level layouts are fixed, the inventory of the enemies are randomized: you just can't know what they'll hold.

I need this game.

I really wish this game had a baby mode or something. I've found some parts really frustrating, and I just keep having these inconsistent issues (tried both k/b and controller) where I'll swing at a guy and nothing will happen, or more often a wounded enemy will be on the floor, and it just will NOT let me get on him to finish him off no matter how I face him or where I'm positioned, so they'll get up and half the time kill me.

Also I'm on Chapter 10 (I think?) right now I have no goddamn fucking clue what you're supposed to do after killing the first guy :/

Picked it back up yesterday and reached the Answers part, played a level and then took another break.
I'm guessing when people talked about stealth level, they meant
the hospital
? If so, it wasn't that bad and imho did fit the game.
Instead I kinda disliked the boss battle that came after. Seemed a bit random in getting things to go the way I wanted. Still what happened afterwards felt satisfactory.

Really enjoyed this. Although I'm having a hard time believing my own steam achievements. I know that the game emphasizes a lot of trial and error and quick respawns, but I can't believe I managed to squeeze in 726 deaths/attempts in just over 4 hours.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Bought this after the $5 Steam sale and lost my whole Sunday afternoon to it...
thought I beat it but it turns out there are a few 'epilogue' stages to go through!

Think the graphics look pretty hideous, making it sometimes hard to tell what is going on (I don't know how many times I died because I couldn't see a still-living guy surrounded by a bunch of corpses), and the hit detection is very poor (especially wtih the guns)... the final boss makes this extremely apparent, watch a youtube video for how to defeat him to see what I mean :p

Don't get me wrong, I did dig what I played and will be finishing it up hopefully tonight, since the way you approach gameplay is a lot different than most action games of this nature. Only a few parts really seem "trial and error" in the way western action games tend to do (
like, the bomb, part where the car with the enemies speeds towards you, or the awful stealth section
). It gives you a lot of freedom with how to take on the different levels - either go balls-to-the-wall or play a bit more stealthily, slowly picking off enemies one-by-one.

I use the horse mask which makes door slams lethal...

And omg the soundtrack is fantastic, especially the club level. A bit anachronistic (MOON's tracks sound a lot like mnml, a sound which wouldn't have been invented for another 16 years!) but still amazing - people told me I should play this just because they know I'd dig the music so much.

BTW I have steamworks turned on but can't shift+tab when I play. Bug?

And I didn't try for the puzzle pieces/extra masks either... can I just restart a chapter, find the puzzle piece, then quit the chapter to unlock em? Or will I need to go through the whole chapter again?

I just don't see this at all. It's half of the appeal. The graphics correspond with almost everything, that is: the soundtrack, the era, the neon synth vibes, the trivialization of death. This would in no way be the same game without the graphics.

I love even with that you can still see the smallest details, like chopped up lemons on the bar counter or someones intestines falling out of their body.

Not being able to tell if one guy is alive out a pile out dead bodies strewn on top of eachother is not exactly a complaint... it's a guy probably crawling out of the blood and guts of his friends and wouldn't be visible anyway until he finally stands up.

Yeah, it's very clean despite being so noisy. I've never had a problem telling a living man from a pile of dead ones, there are a lot of details you start to subconsciously take notice of in the middle of your murderous whirlwind rampages.

Finished the Answers part. Playing
as the biker
was, in a way, even better. The thing at the end was great both without the password as well as with the password.
Great, great game.

I can't get past the
assault level, just after you finish escaping the hospital. The entry point is so hard not to get killed.

But I'm loving the game so far!

I love this game so fucking much and it's the soundtrack of the forever. Favorite song is Deep Cover by Sun Araw. So awesome. My GOTY as of right now....that may change once I finish The Walking Dead series

Can't get past level 4 because the game locks up once I clear the first floor and try to go up the stairs. Saw someone else on the steam forums having the exact same issue, Anyone know a fix?

Just got to the tenth mission and had another crash on W8, so fucking bummed. Wish I'd checked up on it but really didn't expect it to have any compatibility issues with W8.

The game just crashed on me.

I'm on the third to last chapter and got to the last part and the game crashed on me. It took me like 500 attempts to get past it the first two stages.

I may never play this game again, but listen to the soundtrack to remind me of how close I was to finishing it.

That level is rough, I used the unicorn mask after some trial and error because the second stage is full of those tough fat guys that to my knowledge you cannot take down without guns.

I used the tiger mask. I finally got past stage 1 and 2, but when you
start in the elevator
the game crashed on me.

bish gets all the credit :)
Track 11 is missing in those tags, and you have 17 twice. 11 should be Miami Disco, which is the Perturbator.ogg that came with my game. So that still leaves a track sounding like the track Vengeance on Soundcloud out of the picture.

ah you are correct. There's two track 17s because they're split into intro/main song on the oggs, but all one song on the official tracklist.

This game is fucking great. Made the plunge after watching the GiantBomb quickplay and am so glad I did. It's difficult at times but man is it ever satisfying when you have just that one perfect run and beat the level. And a bitchin soundtrack too.

edit: Anyone know how many levels there are total in the game?

edit2:
15 main levels, 4 epilogue levels, and a bonus level.

Thanks

I bought this when it was $5 on Steam and I'm having a blast with it. It's one of my favorite games of the year, but it's not my game of the year, but it's been an amusing ride so far

Beat the story(several times), got all the masks, A+ on all chapters and even got the secret ending...

Yep, this game's pretty great.

Just payed through chapters 1-8 straight through chaining most of the levels with a+ ratings. It's really not so bad once you realize that you can bait guys into doors with both guns and melee. To be honest I think this game is way easier with a controller.

Edit: I like having a knife but the longer combo chaining makes scoring so easy once you know the basic layout of levels.

Can you kill the tubbies this way?

I have with the space bar. But that was after shooting a few times with the assault rifle.
Other times I threw something at him the the space bar execution only odd thing is he killed me then fell down dead. One thing that should be patched in is space bar execution on the dogs it can't be done although one punch or weapon does the trick. The big guy only easy way to kill is the shotty. I have snuffed him with the assault rifle alone but it takes a ton of shots, it isn't worth it.

How do you get A+ from not getting spotted at all? I use a ton of variety door knockdown, punches, executions. I mostly get B+ ratings.

OST of the year, easily. The music in this thing is ridonkulous.

E: Annnnnnnnd I've crashed out again. Fuck, I want to love this game, but these bugs mess with the trance.

You can take them down with guns, but they absorb more bullets than the average person. Don't let up.

How do you get the masks? I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm missing one of the older masks. Do you need to get a high enough score?

Just played through Hotline Miami for the first time. Was not expecting to like it as much as I did (though I'm pretty sure some of the story was lost on me)!

I'd be up for more content for this game.
