my wii u won't connect to my wifi, goddamn I tried like a hundred times already.

You have to be very, very specific about the type of wifi connection/encryption that you're trying to connect to. My 3DS picked up my wireless instantly but the Wii U needed several trial-and-error attempts before connecting. I advise anyone to dip into their router settings and find out precisely what they're broadcasting.

Setting up my Wii U right now.

It hopped right on my wi-fi, first attempt! WPK2-AES.

Downloading the big update right now and it is really. slow. I have a pretty fast Internet connection but this is just crawling. I expected it, though.

Bought myself Trine 2 because of how cheap it was (cheaper than two copies on a 75% steam sale!), and it looks pretty amazing.
Bonus points for being able to play it in bed with comfy console controls :D

Would it be possible to move WiiU Networking questions to a separate thread? It's common enough that it's taking up half of the discussion in this one, which kind of gets in the way of discussing actual system experience.

I'm considering putting mine up on one of the shelves near the TV, to get better reception throughout the house.
It is quite a big machine, so I'm lucky I don't got my Xbox360 anymore.

What about the rest of ya'll?
Anyone else putting it in funky places just to get that little bit of extra wi-fi juice necessary for some bathroom gaming?

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Wow. Little Inferno is amazing.
Yes, it is short (the fact that I've beaten a Wii U game barely one day after EU launch should tell you a lot) but apart from a few minutes of Nintendoland and Mario, that's all I've played today. I'd rather have a short game I'll remember in 5 years than 30 hours of forgettable dross.
And yes, the game almost entirely consists of you burning things to get more coins in order to burn more things, but it is still awesome.
A word of advice - go in completely blind, don't read any spoilers on the internet.

I had mine standing at first, but I really don't like the way it looks, so I put it down flat. The gamepad looks great though. I'll post some pics later if everyone wants to show their setup. I remember one guy on here had just about the slickest place I'd ever seen for a gaming room.

Finally updating for me now, changed WEP protection to WPA and conntected through Wi-Fi Protected Setup - what a hassle.

So the Wii U Nintendo Network Premium thing for Australia and NZ is different to the US.

With every purchase of software or add-on content, or download code redemption for downloadable software, or add-on content in Nintendo eShop on your Wii U, you can earn points at a rate of 6 points for each AUD (5 points for each NZD)* of the Nintendo eShop Price (inclusive of GST) of the respective download.

*
Actual number of points earned may be higher.

Once you have collected 500 points, you can redeem them for an activation code, which can be used to add funds equivalent to AUD 7.00 (or NZD 9.00 for New Zealand) to a Nintendo Network ID on a Wii U console, or to a Nintendo eShop account on a Nintendo 3DS or Nintendo 3DS XL system.

http://www.nintendo.com.au/wiiu/

So you need to spend 83 AUD bucks to get 7 bucks back. Still a great thing, but slightly less so.

Has anyone else been having trouble with their Wii U's video feed cutting out on their TVs, but audio from the TV and the video on the gamepad still working?

It's happening a lot today..really weird :( Screen will just go black, but my TV still detects a 1080p signal.

I'm using component cables if that helps :/

To me, it isn't the cables because the TV still detects a signal fine...

I have a quick question, not sure if this is the right thread to ask, but I've been experiencing some syncing problems with the Wii U and the Gamepad. Everything has been fine up until today when it randomly started doing it. I have received prompts on the Gamepad to move closer to the Wii U, as well as the Gamepad completely losing its connection from the Wii U.

I guess what I'm asking is if the problem has occurred for anyone else and if there is a fix for it.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Cheers for the tips earlier guys. WaraWara finally ticked over to show games and community posts, not the default Nintendo stuff.

I had that problem too till I moved my wii U out of it's protective lead vault.

j/k of course, sounds like it could be some sort of interference problem. Are there a lot of wifi signals in the area?

Had Wii U since midnight launch... main menu Wara Wara plaza stilll only diplays Nintendo messages not online Miiverse stuff. Would be really grateful for any help!

Not sure what I did for it to change... Aside from making sure your online is working, you're signed up for NNID, etc.

I've really enjoyed NSMBU and Nintendo Land, as well as Dishonored, which I'm currently playing on the PS3. But Little Inferno is definetly the most memorable game I've played in quite a while. And you're right, don't read spoilers, that would kind of ruin it.

Well the Wii U sits about 3 feet away from my wifi router, but besides mine there isn't any other wifi signals close by.

After all the talk of freezing and slow menus and such I decided to return my Wii Deluxe unopened. Been burned too many times now with launch consoles (Xbox 360, 3DS) and to be honest there's not too much on it right now that made me have to have it.

The best part was the dude at Gamestop when I returned it. I always took the Gamestop employee stories here on GAF with a large grain of salt, but I actually encountered one of the crazy ones out in the wild.

He asked why I was returning it and I said that I had heard of too many problems with it. He looked at me with a completely serious face and said "It's the best console I own." I asked "But isn't it really slow, like loading and menus and stuff?" and he proceeded to tell me that Nintendo was releasing a 320GB hard drive next week that was going to speed the system up. When I politely expressed surprise that I hadn't heard or read anything about something like that he told me that they (Gamestop) had been informed about it ahead of time.

It was a total WTF moment, and if I hadn't heard it with my own ears I would have called complete bullshit on someone telling me this story.

I thanked him for the info and got the fuck out post-haste.

edit: holy shit I just bothered to check and he's not insane. Time for me to eat crow. Although he told me it was $30 and the one on their site is $80. Will it actually speed the system up or is it justused for more storage?

Well it's plausible Nintendo would release a harddrive, but I do questions it's magic system-speeding abilities!

lol yeah. I don't know how that'd help it. But if the problem is just with the online and is solved with having it off, I can deal with it. The only reason I would return the Wii U if it was the system itself having problems, but that's not it. So I'll just enjoy it the way I can and when they get things patched up with the online then I'll fully enjoy it.

Any source on that? I can't find anything about it anywhere other than a single person posting on GameFAQs, making the same claim that he works at Gamestop and heard it there (maybe the same guy?)

WTF!? I would have dismissed it as BS since retail employees are always giving bad info. and getting stuff wrong.

Haven't heard at all about an official Wii U hard drive and I'm surprised since I've been following gaming news the past couple of weeks.

EDIT: Looks like it is a third-party drive. Doesn't seem to be officially licensed either, but hard to tell without seeing the actual packaging. My guess is this is an attempt by PDP to ride the launch to some easy sales on an overpriced accessory.

so added to my backlog with Darksiders 2 and FIFA 13

played both earlier today and was having a blast with Darksiders 2 well then my gamepad and wii u froze while Death was hanging on the wall still moving his bird was still flying around the dungeon but I could not bet anything to respond to the gamepad. had to unplug everything yet again.

Getting tired of cutting my fun due to system locks Nintendo... Fix this!

I will have to recommend Darksiders 2 so far the combat is more rewarding than AC3 which I am also playing. Good times :)

I'm glad I kept my pre-order after uming and ahing over it for days. I know I've only had a few hours of hands-on time but already I feel this thing has the potential to be a LOT better than the Wii, which is exciting to me because I thought that console was pretty nifty. I stuck in Mario Galaxy 2 to test the Wii emulation and it definitely seems a little more crisp and bright than the original Wii component output. The only major downers right now are the slowness of the network and I've had a couple of hard freezes while playing NSMBU. These are hopefully minor kinks that will be ironed out in the near future.

Thought this might be interesting for some.
The Official Nintendo Magazine Wii U EU Launch Podcast is up, where the magazine's writers deliver their verdict on almost every Wii U launch game - from Ass Creed to Zombi U

I've only listened to the first half hour so far, but it's very entertaining and they're not afraid to call out a terrible game / port.

Mighty Switch Force or Nano Assault Neo? After buying some games I still have around $15 left on the account and not sure which one to get.

Common GAF, which one is more fun (can't really decide from watching the videos lol)?
Nano Assault, get Switch Force on 3DS, the 3D really adds to the game. As to which is more fun, they are both score based at heart but different genres of course, they are both fun in their own right.

Had to skip the launch because I moved. Now it's the usual feeling when skipping a launch. Indifference.

Time to wait for the first killer game.

When the disc is in, does it really *have* to spin all the damn time, even when I'm not in the game? It's like Nintendo wants it go dead in a couple of years.

And you can't install the game? X360 really spoiled me in this regard; first thing I always did was install the game to preserve the drive. Not to mention the updates, oh the updates. Never owned a PS3 so this horror is all new to me.

Still; Mario is great. And I'm glad I already have the system for all the great games we all know we will get.

this is getting out of control, there's no way for me to manage to connect this thing to the internet.

i tried the think about turning off the wii u, deleting the internet settings, re-enter them manually, and still nothing.

here are some screenshots of my router setup

for obvious reason i'm not showing my wi-fi password

here are the settings i entered on my Wii U:

SSID: Ravenloft
Security: WPA2-PSK (AES)
IP: 192.168.1.31
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS 1: 8.8.8.8
DNS 2: 8.8.4.4
Proxy: no
MTU: 1500

error i get:
103-2001

i know the signal from the router is not a problem, it's extremely close and when the wii u search for wi-fi it has the max amount of signal

From pain myself yesterday, and looking st yours, try removing secondary DNS (leave it blank) and check your Gateway is correct (not saying it isn't, just be sure).

Good luck, it had me for hours yesterday!

Got this thing today. Still figuring it out. It's something different so far, very optimistic about it. Initial system update took less than an hour, switching between apps takes 6 to 10 seconds, the Game Pad feels great, Amazon Instant Video doesn't want to start after the update. Deluxe set by the way, got the last one at Target. ID: MindCollizion can I add people without them having to add my ID too?

Edit: To poster below, what is WaraWara Plaza?
2nd Edit: Is there a sleep mode type thing on this like on the Wii where it would stay "on" not completely off and receive notifications with a yellow light on? My power light is red...
