Bayonetta complains about the Wii U's slow OS on Youtube

I don't get the Bayonetta joke.

But yeah, the loading looks unacceptable.

I wonder how fast Nintendo is going to fix this.

Terrible, and people have complained about the 360 in the past!

I don't get the Bayonetta joke.

The everything is an app design is good, but only if your system can properly support it.
The vita does it quite efficiently, opening/switching apps is a non-issue.

Doesn't make any sense for the wiiU to take so long, since the vita only has ~250mb ram for the OS compared to wiiU's 1gb

This will get fixed.

Nintendo seem to be deliberately adopting an Ikea model of releasing things broken and fixing them as it goes along. I say deliberately because Nintendo are control freaks and never seem to do things by mistake. They might make odd choices but there is always a strategy.

In this case they have released their last two consoles (wiiU and 3ds) pretty much broken at launch, this goes against almost everything that we've learnt about Nintendo before -- that they usually provide extremely hardware and software.

So, one of two things are happening. There is a serious problem at Nintendo or they are experimenting -- Other people release broken products, so if Apple get away with it why can't we?

From the way Nintendo publicised the machine, I think they want the WiiU to be a 'grower'. They want word of mouth. The machine is geared towards social behaviour after all.

There is some psychological evidence that says that when you build something, when you are stressed about something, when you are forced to wait, you bond with it more when it eventually works. This is the case with almost every work of art -- some people are turned off by this, but it's exactly how something like Jazz music works, the mental effort (and sometimes pain) that is required, pays off in the long run. Demon Souls works in exactly the same way.

Now, I think this is a pretty strange strategy but I do think it could be justified. And I'm not saying that this IS what they're doing but it could certainly be part of it. They could also have been forced into this decision by time constraints, but I highly doubt they would release a console in this state without knowing that it can be fixed. They would never take a gamble like this without a solid strategy, that's just not what Nintendo do.

Personally, despite the slowness, I think it's a great console OS, mainly because the path from grabbing the gamepad and getting straight into a game has been streamlined. On top of the portability, features like being able to pause the game, watch a video, then go back into the game are useful. As long as the ports from other machines maintain this quality I will be getting them on the WiiU for this reason.

And yes I know that many people here scream 'those ports are shit'. But they're not, They're just not. They're slightly different, much like PS3 versions.
That the console isn't more powerful is a disappointment, but it doesn't matter. The advantages that the gamepad has over the others, not just the screen, but the comfort and accuracy of the sticks (BLOPS) just makes it better for gaming in my opinion, not by miles, but easily enough to sway me.

This is a launch and I doubt we will see many of these problems in a few months, once everyone has got to grips with the machine. And that includes Nintendo.

Wow. Nintendo defense force if I've ever seen it. Crazy defense force at that.

Nintendo doesn't care about the OS as much as they do about games.

The opposite actually. They have had great UI's in all of their consoles. Even Wii U has this potential and it's clearly indicated by the amount of memory they reserved for it.

But something, somewhere went wrong and some UI engineers are still working at Nintendo even though they should be unemployed right now.

3/10, pretty pathetic attempt at an insult. I honestly don't think it's slow. Not sure why people think a few seconds is slow. I guess gamers have no patients these days or something.

Uh, it's slow. Every other device I own loads things immediately or with a brief delay.

I might need to time my WiiU. Either I'm subconsciously patient or I got a lucky break with my WiiU and it has a few extra Pikmin in there.

Mine actually does take about 15 - 17 seconds to start. But 15 - 17 seconds isn't long. Gaf is just way too impatient. I'd hate to see anyone on Gaf have to wait on a bus or use the computers at University of Cincinnati's labs. They'd flip.

So? It's not like you're waiting a minute, or even half a minute. If you can't wait for something for less than 30's, then you need some training in patients.

They think they're entitled to the same sort of experience as comparable devices. They make me sick, these 'gamers'.

Why the fuck is that man dressed up as a woman? Wait it's Japan right? Never mind carry on.

Why is your username the japanese name of the console in your avatar? You a fake expert of Japanese culture?

Wii U's UI will be compared to all other electronic devices UI's that play games. This will not change. And as of now, it's a generation apart going just by loading times alone. Some of you might not care, but that does not mean the standard is any different than the best UI's out there. Smartphones and tablets have defined how fast and responsive a good UI has to be today.

The whole thing is really pretty much just a beta at this point. It's obvious looking at how late in the game they got Miiverse up and running. They were so late that no game even supported Miiverse integration at launch. Even first party game required patches for that functionality. The good thing is that both Miiverse and the eShop are web services, the firmware guys can now focus on bug fixing and optimizations.

I understand that, but most (not all) Gaffers make it sound like they are waiting a full minute or more for it to start. Hell, when I saw the first thread that's what I thought. In my eye it's just seconds, not even half a minute of them either.

Awesome UI design. Could be better, but I love the whole Miiverse, screenshot, friendlist thing. And since the update, its way way quicker too.

Yeah the actual layout and functions are interesting, I was mainly talking about the optimizing and decisions made about how they load things into memory (causing the huge loading times).

Settings is the most baffling. It has the longest load of anything and doesn't do much. I'm pretty sure they are literally unloading the entire WaraWare Plaza I suspect because it detects setting changes at bootup. Especially for the stuff that you see ingame it should probably be hibernated rather than the whole load/unload process they have now.

I'm sorry if this is coming across s trolling but with the myriad of Wii u problems, the only update that could make me buy the console is a machine rebuilt from the ground up.

Stick a fork in it, it's done.

I really love the OS, how it looks and how everything is connected

BUT GAWDDAMMIT IT'S FUCKING SLOW AS FUCK, I expected way more Nintendo! Reminds me of the 3DS which was thankfully patched but this should be fast right from the start. I really hope that they'll optimize that thing!

Funny, Nintendo would've never allowed stuff like this to fly in the past. Remember the beautiful days of no load screens? Seem so long ago now.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
Really hope this gets patched. Hopefully before Smash U is released because that's the time I can see buying Wii U.

I am really enjoying my wiiu but ill agree that it's not a great launch for someone who may own a vita or ipad/iphone.
The OS should be butter smooth at launch and I fear that this is Nintendo doing what they always do, leaving gamers wanting and hoping for features that should be there but won't.
It's similar to the E3 launch of wii and showing us the virtual console, we all thought of the possibilities of every Nintendo game being playable such as old obscure titles that go for funny money on eBay. That didn't happen and as much as I hope for the VC merging with the eshop and being playable on the pad, I know deep down that it won't happen.
It's those little things that make me wish they would quit the HW business and just let me play their games on whatever console I decide to pick without having to buy theirs for the privilege.

Everybody needs more medical training, STAT!

And people shouldn't have a fast gaming console experience because it takes a long time to wait at a bus stop and to get into a computer lab.

I have to say, your logic is undeniable.

Ok, no argument, that is very slow.

Nah man, I've actually had to wait DAYS to get some things shipped from Amazon ... DAYS!! If he can't wait 3 minutes then he obviously has no patients.

I love my Wii U but it is unacceptably slow. Considering the company behind it, the resources dedicated to it, and the demographics intended for it, it really is just the most baffling fuck-up of OS performance I could imagine.

I don't get anywhere near 24 seconds. The longest load for me is indeed the home menu from an app like settings (when coming from a game or app, however, its instant if you're only in one of the 5 always-ready apps - Miiverse, Browser, Friends List etc) - but even then it takes like 10 seconds tops.

Indeed. Moving between the primary functions (browser, Miiverse, etc) is actually very snappy, I see zero cause for complaint there. Booting a retail game is faster than on the previous generation, and then returning to the home menu from a full game does take a few seconds but nowhere even close to 24 for me in any scenario; more like 10.

I've noticed severe variability in loading the home menu and loading miiverse depending on my internet connection though. If someone in the house is downloading torrents, its irritating as fuck.

Its like they're loading in the internet stuff before they load the UI, or at the same time. They should update it so it loads the UI first.

I do believe that the main menu loads a fair amount of internet content every time you hit it, thanks to the heavy Miiverse integration. It might explain why those with shit connections are giving these ridiculous delay numbers that I've never seen on my system.

And the setting app is indeed slow for returning to the main menu, as it seems like it reboots something fundamentally to apply changed settings. But who cares? I have only visited that app twice: once upon first buying the system, and once more for curiosity. There's never a reason to go there, it's a setup app rather than something you'd have any use for on a regular basis.
