Bayonetta complains about the Wii U's slow OS on Youtube

...Yeah, something must be wrong with your 360 if it's taking close to a minute just to get to the dashboard.

To the dashboard? Oh no, I thought he meant the time it takes to turn the system on, load a game and get to the start screen. It definitely doesn't take 45 seconds to get to the dashboard.

By the way, has the mainstream press yet to ask Nintendo about this issue?

I think CNN asked some hard questions about the system, but I don't think they addressed the OS problems. Actually, come to think of it, the press has been pretty silent on the topic as far as I've seen. Which doesn't surprise me in the least, considering their competence level, but to also be fair I haven't read that many interviews altogether.

It seems this is happening because each function in the OS is a different app by itself, so the system is switching between different apps to do different things. Imagine loading a different game just to access a specific thing you want; the Wii and Nintendo handheld OS's use this same system and have the same problems.

Damn.

Remember when Nintendo stubbornly stuck with cartridges for n64 because they hate load times?

What happened.

My feelings exactly.

To be fair, only going to the system settings takes that long. Other apps/programs aren't nearly as bad. I can at into Miiverse in about 8 secs. Load times on a whole though need work.

It's probably easiler for them to update the OS this way. Fixing a bug on one function of the app could cause bugs for another function of the app if they are all part of the same app. As long as each app is seperate, they can fix and test it faster. What they should be doing is preload all the most often-used apps(Friends + Miiverse + etc) into RAM after the OS is loaded, and improving the OS multitasking, that way launching/switching between apps would be faster.

Wasn't the Wii OS slow as well at launch ? I vaguely remember something.

The Wii U OS is also slower than the Wii OS.
I was pretty baffled when I went into backwards compatibility mode, and found how super quick it was to launch a game, go into settings, launch the Wii eShop, etc.

That is pretty embarrassing when you take into account that the Wii OS runs on, like what, 90MB?
The Wii U OS in comparison runs on 1GB.

Wii U OS definitely needs to be speedier. The time it takes to pop into and out of stuff like play logs and settings is ridiculous.

But, slow as it may be, the language select taking a long time seems like a nitpick. How many people would actually be affected by that? And still, wouldn't that be a one time thing in most cases?

I do it all the time and so do probably a lot of other people who know more than one language. I want to play Mario in German. The translation is good and there is no voice acting. I also want to play ZombiU in English, because the German translation is horrible and I am missing out on all the englishness. So on a day when you switch between the two games this is just unacceptable. Like I said, the same thing can be done on pretty much every other device I own within seconds. So it's no nitpick at all.

Just tested how long it takes to open the Vita's settings. 2 seconds. And if you already have the settings running in the background, it's almost instantaneous.

I'd agree if the damn bubbles had AA. Stupid oversight in an otherwise fantastic interface.

Good point. The functionality is bang-on but the jaggy bubbles do look sloppy.

I think it's a testament to the OS design that I'd rather have different coloured stock backgrounds than use any wallpaper. The transitions between pages look so good!
