So I just learned pornography is illegal in South Korea

Don't know if this information is reputable, but according to this site South Korea spent an ungodly amount of money on pornography in 2006, comprising 27% of worldwide pornography revenues.

I don't see any problem here, it's a win-win situation

you are horny? well the government gives you two options:

1) you can fornicate

2) you can spend money on items wich are kinda related to sex but not directly (sexy/aggressive advertisements, forms of packaging, idolization of the body, if you're sexy->you're succesfull) , giving you a panacean effect of satisfaction.

3)

A story from the AP on the volunteers who report the pornographic web sites:

South Korea volunteers battle against online porn, say fight is 'like shoveling in a blizzard'

SEOUL, South Korea — Moon Tae-Hwa stares at his computer, dizzy and nauseous from the hours of porn he’s viewed online while his wife and children slept. He feels no shame — only a righteous sense of mission.

“I feel like I’m cleaning up dirty things,” the devout Christian and family counselor said.

That's not snow they're shoveling...

These are Christian religious group at their heart, so blame traveling American evangelicals who are trying to heal the world from sin.

That is weird. But I guess that's why Korea is like the number one consumer of Japanese porn, from what I've heard.

The only 2 Korean movies I've ever seen (Oldboy and Madeao) had school kids having sex. But I guess it's different if they're acting?

Blame Scottish missionaries. It was a Scot who translated the bible in Korea and Presbyterianism is the poison of choice there. The Americans just took the relay baton from us and kept running. It's eventually going to destroy Korea.

or they can take personal responsibility

Except America has essentially occupied Korea for 60 years. History has shown that people tend to accept the religion of the one who is pinching them under their thumb and inundating them with their messaging. They have personal responsibility... sure... but cultural domination is a thing.

So then why is pornography still legal in America?

edit - And what "messaging" are you talking about? What cultural impact has America had on Japan by comparison?

Film is sort of a different ballpark. I Saw the Devil and A Tale of Two Sisters aren't exactly clean family funtimes either, but they're still not outright pornography. Someone who is more familiar with the region can probably correct me on this, but it's not like any of those were blockbusters in Korea (or anywhere), really.

That's not really an argument I've made...? It's not that Korea is being made into America. It's that Korea is culturally dominated by America and highly susceptible to its influences. And some of those influences, they've taken and run with (ie Pop and Evangelism)

America produces more pornography than any other nation on the planet. WE have a culture of porn. We watch it. We distribute it. We talk about it on TV. Yet somehow America is responsible for porn being illegal in South Korea because we've had troops stationed there? The logic is sorely lacking here.

You can't compare the impact of American occupation on Korea and Japan. They have utterly different stories. Japan was an economic powerhouse and a world-class Empire by the time Americans occupied, giving them a highly self-assured culture and the willingness of the Americans to kowtow to their existing ways... Korea was less so.

Clearly we have seen examples of countries that are Christianized because of total Western domination. The Philippines? Paraguay? Did they ever have a chance to choose their religion or was it just an overwhelming wave that they couldn't avoid? Korea is a little bit like that, but in the modern age so it's to a lesser extent....

They fight the porn primarily because of Christian groups. The Christian groups exist because of Western domination. I'm not laying blame here. I'm describing why it is there.

Western domination of the political circumstance is why there is pressure to join Christianity.... Just as Chinese domination of Korea's ancient circumstances is why they became Confucian. If an Islamic country occupied Korea... guess what pressures they'd face then?

It's not just "oh they decided these ideas were better in the free marketplace of ideas".... they are political reasons why certain ideas are foisted on the populace.

Every country that allows pornography has a religious majority though, specifically a Christian one. Its culture that's important here and America doesn't have a culture of being anti pornography so where's the relation? I just don't see how the US even comes into the picture unless pornography was legal before the occupation, which I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it wasn't.

Money, money, money, money.

Or are you trying to argue there aren't religious group in the US that would ban porn.

Money would only be relevant if porn companies could influence politics, which they can't. Especially in the digital age.

edit - fuck I need to learn to stop arguing so much

I'll say again that no one is suggesting that Korea is banning porn because they are becoming like America. They are banning porn because they have taken ideas that American domination has fostered and run with it. And that American domination means stronger pressure upon the people than those who actually live in America! It's the same reason why American businesses have done some fucked up things in other countries (Coca-cola monopolizing the water supply, etc), that they could never have in America itself.

But yes, let's shift the dialogue a bit to get at compromise: the reason why they have taken Christianity and "run with it" in this way is because of existing tendencies that have nothing to do with America. Confucianism would not tend to be porn-friendly either. Conservative Buddhism, same. And yes, Christianity had penetrated the country before the Americans (to a greater extent than the politically stronger China and Japan).

Don't they have like the best internet connects in the universe right now?
For shame!

Good point. What a waste.

How old are you?

The largest profit makers of the porn industry in the USA are credit card companies and large hotel chains.

I only have seen about 3 Korean gay porn movies so that explains it. Cannot wait to move to Japan.

i'm kinda curious here, between all my Masaki Koh special (both dvd and blurays) there are some censored and some are not...there's a specific reason for it? :/

Non censored stuff is released outside of Japan. Official Japanese releases are all censored.

The US had 15 states with Sodomy Laws up until 2003, making oral and anal sex illegal.

It's still illegal in many states to own sex toys and pornography can still be judged inder the "Miller Test", so punishment can vary state by state here in the US.

Governments getting involved in citizen's sex lives is creepy.

Why do you even need porn in SK? You go out at night, put forth minimal effort and you can get laid. It's not difficult in Korea. Add curiosity because you are a foreigner, which makes cross cultural coitus and even less daunting hurdle.

Just don't double dip in the 된장 at the 포장마차 so to speak. (Neighborhood bike reference)
