Given that these issues are present at all shows a certain lack of consideration for the product, so I'm doubting there will be any initiative to fix them down the road.

There's definitely things that are good about the overall package, but I would've thought precise quality emulation would've been a first and foremost priority.

-nod- Yeah, but I hope the overall show of support from purchasers might give them a bit more incentive to work harder.

Maybe the focus was just one getting the hardware out first, and letting that build some money, before giving an extra focus to the software side. At least one can be "fixed" at a lower cost through patches and firmware updates.

I'd love to be surprised, and see them really pour out a lot of support and attention over the next few months.

If they really want to sell additional games going forward, they'll have to keep people wanting to buy games on the system, so I'm interested in seeing what types of things they'll be able to do.

That's the thing... this is not SNK hardware. It's just an emulator, and apparently not a great one.

You will never see real, true SNK NeoGeo hardware in a modern handheld. It's just not feasible, and probably not even possible anymore (i.e. I doubt Motorola even makes 68000 CPU's these days). SNK could've maybe done it back in the day, but the cost would've been crazy, and the battery life probably as bad or worse than the Sega Nomad.

Sad to say, but I suspect a lot of NGX's will end up in people's closets in a few weeks.

Actually, I think you can buy the good old MC68000 chips. You'd have to buy it from Freescale (where Motorola's CPU division got spun off into). http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=MC68000

I'm betting one can still get the Z80s also necessary.

I wonder about battery life, though. I doubt any source for these chips are going to be more power efficient than they were back then, though we do have much better batteries these days.

after two hours of messing around with it and playing both off tv and the portable screen, here are some impressions:

-tv mode didn't bother me as much as I thought. After some color change settings and screen mode changes it looked about what I expected, but not in a bothering way.

-the tearing/flicker is weird and reminds me of a shitty monitor. I hate screen tearing in 3d games but its not as distracting in most games. some are exceptions.

-audio quality through the tv was fine, audio quality with the speakers can be hit or miss. sometimes it can sound tingy and other times its perfect. its fine more often than not though.

-the arcade stick is pretty nice. its the clicky-est thing in the world, making movements feel really solid and precise. Its really dumb theres no home button or way to activate the home button

-the manual says "Opinion in our team is divided as to wether we prefer the HDMI version or the more retro AV version gaming experience. It would be useful for us to know which version you prefer. You can let us know at support@neogeo.com". lol

-the screen on the portable itself is clean. I could see sprite games on this looking really nice.

-feel-wise, it's lighter and might feel cheap to some, but I actually like it. the thumbstick is once again the greatest in the world. playing nam 1975 on this thing is a dream, cartwheeling everywhere with no problems while moving the cursor easily. this alone makes this a worthy purchase as I patiently wait for homebrew.

overall It definitely let down some people in some areas, but I think it has great potential as a platform. hopefully it gets support. Buying the portable itself should be reasonable for most 2d lovers, but I think only hardcore AES nerds will care about the attachment stuff.

I was scared after reading impressions but I'm happy I bought the thing. yay!

So instead of buying them on PSN/XBLA or Virtual Console and actually supporting them, according to you we are free to pirate any of these games because the original staff probably won't see a cent of today's income from these sales? Very nice.... bah

I'm just playing the devil's advocate here. Unless a game enters abandonware status, or goes into freeware it is copyright violation to download a ROM/ISO of a game, even if it doesn't get a digital re-release.

Well that's a relief. ;)

I prefer if they developed the system with the ability to support more than two somewhat worlds apart video output standards. Next version will probably only have RF and Display Port.

Where's my RGB or at least Component?

Making my first post in, what, a year?, to say that I actually like the Neo Geo X Gold. I owned an AES between 1994-1998 and, so far, I'm enjoying the similarity to that experience. But, of course, that comes with one huge caveat:

I hooked it up to a ten-year-old Sony Trinitron CRT. In that regard, it reminds me very much of my past experiences with an AES. Sometimes, you just have to accept that these old games are best enjoyed with old televisions/monitors. The one nitpick I notice at all is that the framerate isn't quite there--flashing effects seem to, skip, for lack of a better term.

Had a lot of fun with random games of Samurai Shodown II, KOF 95, and Ninja Master's last night. Really hope they'll do a shmups card soon... SHMUPS!

I miss the metal bases and size of the original AES joysticks, but don't hate the new models at-all. They definitely put some thought into them.

I get people's complaints with the emulation, especially with regard to the HDMI output. I configured a setting on my HDTV speficially for the system, and after about a half-hour of futzing I got it looking pretty nice. I admit, a few built-in filters would've been appreciated.

I'm satisfied. But I'm coming from the perspective of having owned a comparatively pricey AES system and the thought process of, "OMG this is so much more affordable / convenient than that!" Most people today will approach the Neo Geo X Gold kit from the perspective that it costs as much as a PS3 and does not offer remotely the quanitity of modern entertainment value. In that regard, ouch, I feel ya.

I'd love to see Tommo keep putting out game cards and improving the system, but given the reality of today's consumer gaming market, I know I pretty much just dropped $250 on a collector's item...

... that I'm enjoying :)

I am so broke but so tempted to order this thing. Baseball Stars 2 and League Bowling anywhere and anytime are such valuable prospects for me.

I'm concerned about this though...

The guy says the audio channels are reversed when you output to TV? Ay yi yi...
Come on, man, between this, the lack of vertical sync, and the poor video out do you REALLY want this thing? There are better ways to play NeoGeo games legally. This is nice looking hardware but their implementation sounds TERRIBLE.

I own a mvs cab and about 50 games now, and i'm still split about getting one..damnit! It sounds like a bunch of those issues could be fixed by an update!

I know... I know... it does sound like the games play well on the handheld. I wouldn't have to plug it into the TV ever. I have a Neo Geo Pocket Color so I also know how cool it is to have clicky controls on the go.

Sigh... I don't think I've ever even played Ninja Masters either.

Holding out for now, though. I have an AES and a nice library. I'm just at that point where most AES games I want are now the expensive ones. I got most of the low hanging fruit already.

He probably switched red and white
He specifically says that it's in HDMI where the problem seems to be. Can't switch red and white there.

This sounds exactly like my situation. I could play superior versions of all these games on my MVS cab, but I still really want this damn thing. If any gift cards come my way next week, then maybe that will push me over the edge.

I think the pull is directly proportional to your love of SNK and these games. It's a nice enough selection they have on the thing. And again, it has the two I can't live without... Baseball Stars 2 and League Bowling.

It sounds like the people who are giving it positive reviews don't love it, they just know they can't return it now, so they're accepting of its flaws. I'm still torn on whether to open mine or bring it to Target for my $200 back. The box definitely is gorgeous...

That's what I'm getting from it.

"Oh, you get used to the tearing...it's not THAT bad"

"If you fiddle with the TV out it looks OK, I guess"

Nobody seems excited by it at this point.

I did the same thing, and I'm pretty disappointed.

The output through composite is interlaced/480i, not "non-interlaced"/"double strike"/240p/"progressive" or whatever you want to call it. I.E. the "fake hi-res" mentioned in this article: http://scanlines.hazard-city.de/

And there's still the same tearing that's present through HDMI, even if a scan converter was used it would still be a dodgy picture. :( Plus you'd still be dealing with the general "quality" of the composite out picture.

Well, if they're asking, I'll send them an e-mail. I would think the tearing at least could be fixed in a future software update. Don't know if 240p is possible on the hardware used, but if the HDMI 480p output was improved then I'd be happy.

A lot of the issues do sound fixable though. That's a positive out of some serious negatives.

Well I've never played really any neogeo games for the most part. Would this still be a good thing to have? Mines out for delivery today but wondering if I should just put it up on ebay then. :(

I don't want to sound like an ass, but I don't think these are going to be worth anything special in the future. I dont see hardcore neogeo owners spending a premium on this.

I could be wrong, the collecting market is very bizzare sometimes but eh..

Unfortunately, I suspect the video output is borked at the hardware level. It's probably the result of whatever hardware they selected to scale video to different resolutions. It probably lacks support for 15 khz 240p video output.

As for as v-sync is concerned, but I suspect the hardware simply isn't powerful enough to emulate the games at full speed with v-sync enabled. They probably ran into this during testing. Perhaps if they optimize the software they could make up for the lack of hardware capabilities but I wouldn't hold out hope. :\

Just a hunch, but has anyone tried plugging in a generic usb controller like those Saturn or SNES replica pads for compatibility?

Well,

Mine is at the Post Office waiting to be picked up tonight. I'm cautiously optimistic. Excited to try the handheld, at least.

I'm not disappointed I can't return mine :p

Had no inclination like that. Positives > Negatives for me.

My wife doesn't look perfect either, but I also really like her gameplay ;)

As a massive collector and from someone who hasn't ordered one of these yet, I can tell you they'll certainly be collectable. More so if the system fails sooner than later.

Niche, quirky and unnecessary systems/handhelds like this are going to be tops on a collector's list 10-15 yrs from now. They'll carry a solid value then. Also, the fact that these Gold Editions are going to be limited, that factor alone will drive up their value.

The collector in me is very, very torn on this. The smart, patient gamer part of me wants to place an order right now. The cheap bastard collector in me wants to wait and see if these hit their initial devaluing in the months to come, but risk acquisition.

*sigh* A true first-world problem...

I can see why someone would be disappointed if they intended it to be used mainly in the dock.

But as a handheld, I think it's fantastic. I didn't own an arcade stick so the X's will be nice for using on PC. The dock is only $20 and acts as a nice case for it.

I'd never return it. But for someone who owns a stick already, waiting for the standalone handheld is certainly the best bet at this point.

Got mine.

Hell yeah I'm opening it. Plenty of other ways to play these games, but will be fun on the handheld. Packaging and style is all cool too. And Nam-1975. Whoo!

Following the thread on NG forums... Some guys are already pulling the thing apart and looking inside. Sounds like this thing could turn into a really nice homebrew machine.

Ok,

So I spent the last few hours with this thing. My overall impressions:

Handheld. Really great quality for the $130 price (and the fact that it comes with 20 built-in games). Screen is good and serviceable but about on par with the earlier SPs...but obviously not back-lit as such. Operating system is quite quick and the included games load nice and fast. Stick is amazing. I prefer it to even the more recent replica pads and I feel it is better than the one on the pocket. They knocked it out with the stick. Everything else, button-wise are good. Thing is a fingerprint magnet, though. It has a similar face-feel to the Vita. Sound output over headphones is alright but with only six levels to choose from the gradations are too chunky (I'm using IE6 buds). Back rubber/plastic grip is neat as are the two very well-done SNK logos. System seems a little too big for its own good and after seeing images of the PCB it looks as if they were a bit lazy.

Games: I personally bought this for Nam-1975 and Cyber-Lip as those were two of the games I owned when I had and AES and I've very fond memories...likely because they were $200. But, I truly think Nam-1975 is one of the greatest arcade experiences ever and we used to always play it in 7-11 despite owning the cart. Now, there is quite a bit of tearing issues on most of the games depending on what you are playing and where and how you are viewing the image. I hooked the system up to two different CRTs (both eruro multisync cheapies via composite) and those exhibited some truly dreadful tearing. Even single sprites that move across the screen tore a little. This is not as much of a problem when playing on the handheld or HDMI on my Samsung HDTV. The image was so bad, quality-wise and tearing-wise on my CRTs I'll never play them like that. Fighters without a lot of screen scrolling have the least. Side-scrollers like Cyber-Lip had some of the worst. Different setups handled it differently, kinda weird. FWIW, both my CRTs are heavy multi-sync which play everything from Secam to multiple flavors of NTSC to PAL. They are both Ghetto, one dug out of a dumpster and another I paid $99 for. Overall not happy with CRT/Composite playback. Also, like others have mentioned, this thing out of the box is very dark and heavy image tweaking is necessary to get it passable.

Docking Station. Looks great, works great. It is exactly a nice little replica of the AES! And once you get the handheld in there it actually has some heft to it and feels quite nice. The reset button is cool, too. It is just a little mechanical button that presses the menu button on the handheld. Nice little docking station and a cool addition to anybody's game room.

Arcade Stick. I absolutely love these. Buttons feel better than any of the recent replicas and stick is quite good. I'm probably gonna open up one of my two to check out what is inside. They are light, yes, but put them on a little box (I use an arcade stick box) and they have rubber feet that grip nicely. I'm gonna put some lead ballast in one to get it up to heaviness anyways. Altogether 70% on the way to feeling like an AES stick. I'll add that the ball-top is a bit cheap.

HDMI Output. With CRT woefully out of the picture I'm resigned to playing on my big Samsung HDTV so I've gotta go with HDMI. With some image tweaking I got it looking pretty good. Sound is fantastic, too. No problem there. Altogether, I'm moderately pleased with its HDMI output after adjustments. Certainly enough to get two-player Nam-1975 on over the holidays. I've also got two free HDMI inputs on my Framemeister upscaler and after reading Fudoh's poor review on shmups of how it didn't help much (just make shit smell a little better) I was pretty bummed. I hooked it anyways and tweaked the image through the upscaler and I finally got it looking quite nice. All the underlying issues are still there but it does help to cover them up a little and my color tweaks are all on a preset so I'm happy with the results.

Overall. Pretty happy with the system. Certain aspects are a true love-affair with the system. Emulation is nowhere near the Wii but decent enough. I don't need to justify the $200 price as I was never not going to get one, being an official SNK-licensed product...and it is cheap enough for shits and giggles. Quite happy with the handheld and will be doing most of the playing there. Hoping they can update the firmware somehow but I'm not expecting it. Interesting to see what the hackers make of the system...lot of potential on that end. Recommended only for those who can recalibrate their expectations. This is not in any way a replacement for and MVS or AES (or even Wii VC). If you have ANY TYPE of aversion to screen-tearing then stay far, far away...or at least give the handheld a go to see if you can stomach it there. A curiosity when all is said and done.

Here is an image I finally got via HDMI and the upscaler after spending a bit of time changing the colors to get Nam to what I remember it being like in the arcades (going from memory since it has been 20 years since I played the game):

No credit inserts. From what I understand no saves or score saves. Looks like the thing actually has a 1gb onboard memory, so I wonder why they didn't provide any kind of saving options.

There is a way to add credits. It says in the manual, but I cant find it at the moment.

Not an expert by any means with neogeo (new to me) but the arcade stick feels good. The handheld feels nice. Graphically good on the hand held as well. Little blurry /stretched on hmdi but change my aspect ratio 4:13. Looked good! :D Really glad I decided to get it.

Just shell out 299 euro for a WiiU but a Neo Geo branded system is tempting.
Too bad it seems the emulation isn't accurate enough.
