+ Yuusha is the same VA as Kraft Lawrence and Blood-C dog!

Duckroll: Maoyuu doesn't just have the same director as Spice and Wolf. It has the same director, the same writer, and the same art director.

Cast:

Maou (Demon Queen): Ami Koshimizu
Yuusha (Hero): Jun Fukuyama
Head Maid: Chiwa Saito
Elder Sister Maid: Haruka Tomatsu
Little Sister Maid: Nao Touyama

I like the OP, but I'm not sure if I want to watch a 4 episodes series about the worst girl

True, but while Hanekawa does suck, the cat spirit is awesome, and this show is about that after all.

Also plenty of sister action. If you're into that sort of thing of course...

Why wouldn't it be popular? Don't you like....economics? Yea, I'm going with economics. That's definitely what makes it popular.

When does Maoyuu Maou Yuusha hit anyway?

I should watch Utena one of these days.

My first time through, I thought it was a 7 out of 10 show. Second time through I moved it up to 9. And as my current rewatch goes, I'm really digging it more. Though I still just don't love the Black Rose arc like others.

I mean I'm probably watching it and all but it's not the same. Wolf S3 still needs to happen dammit! ;_;

And part of the reason why only a very small fraction of the anime watching public buys anime is because the discs are so expensive! Gotta love the cycle.
It's beautiful isn't it? I still feel that the anime business model needs a big shake-up tbh though I have no idea what that would imply.

July 21, 2013 will be the 15th anniversary of the foundation of Key, the visual novel developer behind fan favourites such as Clannad and Little Busters!. For its creations, Key has enjoyed well-deserved success in Japan, but few of its titles besides their anime adaptations have been released officially overseas.

The Key 15th Anniversary Letter Project is a fan-coordinated effort to reach out to Key and its parent company Visual Art's with an anthology of letters, art, and videos. It follows an earlier attempt that took place around Key's 10th anniversary, which occurred around the uproar over the eroge RapeLay. The project's goal is to demonstrate that Key has an appreciative fanbase outside of Japan that is still open to its visual novels.

The question then is what purpose the movies serve. If they were a sort of reinterpretation of the manga, with a very specific purpose of their own with something different to say about the same characters with a different tone, then sure, that is a valid point. But as it is, it appears that the movies are mostly a straight adaptation of the manga, with less content.

One of the main purposes of the trilogy seems to be getting all of this basic material, which has already been adapted once before, out of the way as quickly as possible before they can finally try to make something completely new out of the following story arc(s). However, I don't think they are attempting to be unreservedly straightforward about it...nor can they possible be, for that matter, without producing much longer movies. The manga couldn't even be done full justice by the old TV series and these films have even less running time than that.

The original source material is so dense and has so many layers of world-building, characterization and foreshadowing that it is difficult to claim an absolute reduction of complexity and detail should have no structural impact on the tone. The overall narrative progression should be similar, in essence, but not the experience of getting through it. The story doesn't mechanically follow every single panel, especially since many of them are nowhere to be found, nor does it place the same amount of emphasis on all of their constituent elements. Even the simple use of CG, as misguided and ridiculous as it is, gives the battles a different scale and feel. In practice, the trilogy seems to be more of a semi-faithful interpretation, whether by choice or by necessity, than a truly strict adaptation.

Then why the hell did they not just make more Spice and Wolf?

Presumably because people with money were willing to fund a Maoyuu series, and were not willing to fund another season of Spice and Wolf? Why did David Milch make Luck instead of making more Deadwood? :p

Maybe they do have better taste. If this sells better than Spice and Wolf, they would be right! If they're bad at their job, then they wouldn't have much money. Which... could be what happened to the people who funded Spice and Wolf! Hohoho!

I just wanted to say that it's been a great year, and AnimeGAF has brought me much pleasure and entertainment. I can't believe that it's already New Year's Eve. I'd like to raise a glass of champagne to the following members (which include - but is not limited to): Cajunator, SDBurton, Chet Rippo, Uchip, Hitokage, /XX/, Ultimadrago, RurouniZel, Izayoi, Regulus Tera, Theonik and a few others I'm probably missing . I have had some wonderful encounters with you, and you are all fine people. To everyone else - you entertain and amuse me daily. Your passion for this hobby is nothing short of inspirational, and this place wouldn't be what it is without you. Half of my enjoyment with this hobby comes from watching new and old shows, and half of it comes from here. Thank-you.

Huh, so there officially labelling it as a '2nd Season'. I guess that makes Nise something else entirely. Interesting marketing, I suppose because they are going to cover so many books.

2nd Season is referring to the "2nd Season" of the novels, I don't think it has any relation to "seasons" of animation...

I am sure this show will be fine, and all, but I honestly don't even being particularly impressed with the direction in Spice and Wolf. It's really a series where people seem largely attached to it because of it's characters (and by extension the writing) as well as the setting. I do find it interesting that they are very deliberately assembling the 'dream team', as it were.

Just in case I am not around later on, and because we're all in different timezones anyway, I'd just like to wish everyone a Happy New Year. There's certainly been a terrifying amount of activity in this community and I have enjoyed (very nearly) all of it. Thank you for making this thread such an enjoyable place to visit.

Well the people with money rarely pick the shows they fund themselves! Also look at this

Yes, spice and wolf, visually and direction wise was not really notable. It was the setting and characters that made it as such. Of course the writer is also the same so we may have a good show again!

Oh look, the best shoujo finale of the season.

Well it wins just for having a final episode that does feel like a final episode. Bonus points for the shoujo lead overcoming the shoujo breakdown all by herself instead of having the guy rescue her.

It is too bad that Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun aired in the same season as this, as this would have definitely been my favorite shoujo of the season. Fun cast, the female lead is at least takes action and the last episode was just beautiful.

At least S&W got to season 2 and Haruhi S3 is just a matter of when, not if. That's more than I can say for something hopeless like
Nichijou
:(

Nichijou was just amazing. I keep hearing about all these problems the series had with sales and it makes me think we'll never see an American Blu-ray release. Such a good show...
Not that anyone cares but here are the results for 2ch's AOTY thread. I'm actually shocked that Tari Tari won.
